ok here's the official page on it
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?ctx=%67mail&hl=en&answer=20616

Basically you can change who emails are from

I'm not exactly sure how this works, you can add any email address you
own to it, it then sends a message to that email address with a
confirmation link that you click to ensure you own the email address

Then you can send messages out that say they are from that email
address, some sort of forging or something going on? I can see this
being hack for easy impersonation

anyways I attached several screens

Pretending to be someone else.

I'm doubting Cracell's assertion that this is easily abused.

Yeah, I can not stop using thunderbird to check my damn work mail. I
can check it all here now. Or create a new account and forward my
work mail to it. that way we can be @work.com instead of @gmail.com.
I love gmail interface, so it will be a great way to do it. heh

So, does anyone else have this? Or is this just another web clips
that takes mothns to roll out. lol

I have it.

Also, I found something very nice (that people have been looking for).
You can enter a "differently-dotted" address as an alternate address.

For example, if you are bobbyhandlebar @ gmail.com, you can register
bobby.handlebar @ gmail.com as an alternate address... so, this is
good news for those who wanted different dotting in their addresses.

I just tried this trick, and sent a message from my Gmail account to my
work (non-Gmail) account which I read using Outlook. Outlook displayed
the From address as:

myrea...@gmail.com on behalf of Vik [myal...@notgmail.com]

That's a pain. I examined the email header info and while the From:
header does only contain my alternative name/email, there is a Sender:
field also that contains my bona-fide Gmail addy.

I wonder if this is a Gmail bug, an issue with this 'backdoor', or a
deliberate anti-spoofing measure by Google?

Fuzzy Logic

unread,
Aug 22, 2005, 7:17:03 AM8/22/05

Option #3. Deliberate anti-spoofing. Why is it a pain? The From: field
contains the correct email address, so people who recieve it should be
able to reply without any problem.

Vik

It's a pain because while I don't mind people being able to figure out
my gmail addy if they know where to look, I don't want it to be
immediately visible in a message list. Not because I wish to deceive
someone, but because I want to use the feature with my full name or
nickname or antispam forwarding address or whatever. The "on behalf of"
crap can look confusing or suspicious. Anyway, I had to validate my
alternative address, so where's the spoofing problem?

A little bit of trivia: I noticed my new features link had vanished
this morning so I went to the settings, but still no sign of the new
feature. I read on another forum that if you change the gmail language
from English (UK) (which is how I have it now) to English (US), the
new feature appears. I didn't believe it, but I tried it, and
immediately I was able to change the from address! Changing the
language back to UK lost the feature. Is this the first time Google
have rolled out a feature based on language I wonder?

OK I have a new feature that should be added to this multi from
address thing.. Google should automatically use the replied to email
address when replying to received messages.

Example. I send an email out from my Gmail account using my
uneasysilence address. When someone replies to that email, any replies
from me should automatically use the ues address instead of me having
to manually change the FROM address each time.

Thank you, Thank you, I still don't have the Accounts feature, but with this workaround I don't need it, and Gmail will now do all that I want in one email system.

Wonderful.
