I'm seeing a lot of discussion, problems, whatever about accessing
Gmail from a POP3 client ('xxx doesn't connect', 'yyy cannot send',
...). IMHO it doesn't make much sense to use it that way. Gmail is a
webbased mailservice. Why should I access it with a client-side mail
program? Of course, Google has to offer POP3 because all the other mail
services have it.
What do you think about it? Am I missing something?

Ok, now this makes sense for me. ;)

Is there an option which mails to download? For example, when 1 GB is
filled, I might decide to download all mails older than 1 year or so.

no option like that.. pop also allows users to backup their accounts
to a local computer.

Yeah, so you can basically read your mail offline instead of going on
the 'net to read it.

For example...I have a nextel phone. With my web services, I am able
to sign on AIM, check my hotmail, or yahoo e-mail accounts. BUT, my
very most active account is my gmail account. So, when I went out
searching on how to connect my gmail account to my phone, I did not
have to go far. After a little searching on my own, you click on your
"Settings" link at the top right, and then click on the "Forwarding and
POP" tab. From there, the default setting is "Disable forwarding" and
"Disable POP". I just changed the setting, logged into my nextel
account, set up a connection to my gmail account, and now, I am able to
read all my mail in my gmail account.
I hope this has helped anyone, and for additional questions, just
e-mail me at lin...@gmail.com.

Hey Scott, this FreePOP thing sounds interesting. Do you know of any
tutorials or articles I could read to help me decide whether to use it
in preference to the native POP functionality?

i run freepops at startup in silent mode. this basically means you won't see
an icon in your tray. let me know if you need any help, but keep it gmail
specific as we should stay OT whenever possible. good luck.
