The Resource Room seems to have created a stir within the mathematics
department. What do you think?

I still like the computer lab idea. Some people have raised the point
that the Resource Room might be too hot to run computers in though.
Maybe a few could be moved, and the current computer lab could be
rearranged to be more productive. It is hard to deny that LIT425 is
currently set up to be as space-inefficient as possible.

Actually it is a security issue, Little 425 is equipped with not only
a keypad lock but is one of the few rooms that can ONLY be entered by
a door.

The resource room does not have high speed internet connection like
425, nor does it have enough plugs to have computers. There is a
regulation on the type of power strips one can use at the university.
In fact, the GMA is in violation of the amount appliances we have in
the graduate lounge as it stands.

Not to mention the fact that you will have awful glare on your
computer screen because of the large window and the sun. Having direct
sunlight on a computer screen does tend to make things hard to see.

Also, the room behind little 425 is where the computer severs are
located, which is where the "h:\" drive is stored. You have either
have to move all that, or extend all of those cords. You know that
door that says "DO NO CLEAN THIS ROOM" on the other side of the 425?
That is server room.

Plus, we do computer training for webassign and/or new graduate
students at least twice a semester. During those times, it is nice to
have a large room like that.

I feel that we should try to come up with was to utilize the Resource
Room. It is a beautiful room with a great view.

That room is perfect as a study room. I think we should have access to
it during "off" times unlike the atrium. Getting rid of all the unused
or infrequently used books seemed like a good idea the board makes it
a great place to hold study sessions. As far as it being a lounge, It
would be a shame if it turned into a place like the current state of
the graduate lounge.I don't think it should be turned into anything
that allows food. foods and carpeting is never a good combination. I
don't think as graduate students we realistically have the ability to
really deodorize the graduate lounge which makes it an uncomfortable
place to study frequently.

Yes, it would be absolutely impossible to move the Computer Lab. It
has the ventilation, security, and proper wiring. This should be
taken off the table.

As for the RR not being for us -- we were already given a room. If it
is for seminars or a faculty lounge, then we have to deal with that.
Even though the Grad Lounge has been in this state since probably all
of us have gotten here, it doesn't give us the right to complain about
not having a room. It could be very nice, and we could definitely fix
it up, and even deodorize it. We need to set up strict rules and have
some kind of policing policy about what can be brought in there. And
yes, it would be a lot of work, but I feel like a big source of the
complaining is because the RR has just always been nicer and we didn't
have to do any work on our part.

We should stop complaining about what has been taken from us and
figure how to use what we have been given.

I agree. We should remove the appliances from the graduate lounge.
After awhile we can just Febreze the heck out of it and decide what to
do with the lounge next. We are using picnic tables in the lounge now.
We could possibly request a sturdy table after we clean it out.

It sounds like it is not logistically possible to get more
productivity out of LIT425. That's a shame, in my opinion, but I
guess we have no control over it.

As for the graduate student lounge, it will probably take much more
than Febreeze to make it fit for occupation again. The furniture and
carpets will likely need to be steam cleaned if the fabric can
withstand it (I have a steam cleaner). Several appliances should be
removed and the remaining washed thoroughly. The refrigerator, in
particular, needs to be completely bleached. Many of the papers,
books, and other porous surfaces around the room have also become
sources for the smell rather than sinks, and will need to be removed.

Speaking of sinks, is there one anywhere in the department that we can
use? It seems like wherever food is eaten/stored, a sink should be
close by, but so far I have been unable to locate one in the grad
lounge. It would also help if a supply of chalk could be reliably
maintained in the room. I have put chalk and erasers in there several
times, and each time they have been stolen within a day or two.
Perhaps keying the room would be a good idea?

I think we may need a completely separate topic on what to do with the
current graduate lounge, as well as what type of help we could get
with making it more inhabitable.. I don't think it is possible to put
a sink in there because of there not being a bathroom anywhere nearby.
In terms of the Resource room i do think it would be a good place to
hold meetings or seminars especially for smaller groups of people. If
it gets turned into a faculty lounge that's one thing but for anything
else by baring access to it for graduate students at night or weekends
I think the room would be getting quite a bit less use then intended.
