The GMA website is going to be redone by Sebastian. Is there any
information about graduate school that you think should be included in
the website that is not there already?

Does "redo" mean design a whole new layout? I like how simple and
easy to use the current GMA website is, so I hope the functionality is
preserved. It just looks a little dated. I've done a bit of web/
graphic design in the past, so I can probably chip in a little with
either coding or design work if there's need. I don't have
Dreamweaver or any other fancy software though, so I can't do anything
high-tech at all. Here's half of a web page I threw together when I
had some down time last semester, as an example (I do not endorse this
color scheme for the GMA page): http://plaza.ufl.edu/gwp/site/

Some gentle suggestions:

- A couple of links I would add to the "Career Info" section:
http://www.ams.org/employment/academic-job-search.html -- A guide
to getting an academic job in mathematics
http://www.teachingcenter.ufl.edu/ta_development.html -- TA
workshops the Broward Teaching Center offers. Some people might be
interested but not remember they exist.
It would also be nice if we could have more sample resumes, etc. on
that page. If any graduating students or recent graduates could be
solicited for testimonials on job-hunting, I think a lot of people
would be interested.

- Past Events: I'm sure there has been more than two past events;
that the newest one is 4 years old makes me feel like an archaeologist
when I visit this page. With the advent of facebook, it might be
superfluous anyway since pictures can just be posted in a group
somewhere (is there a GMA facebook group?). A page for "future
events" might be useful, though.

- The link to the google group in the sidebar doesn't work for me in
any browser I've tried (including IE, Firefox, and Safari). This may
have something to do with the GMA website wanting to open links within
a frame, and google not wanting to cooperate, I'm not really sure.

- The minutes of GMA meetings, whenever they're taken, could probably
be posted online.

- This was probably going to be done anyway, but a webpage for the
graduate student seminar is in order, once it gets going.

That's all I can think of. I'm looking forward to seeing the new
page!

The website will be coded in raw HTML. WYSIWYG editors were the
downfall of the "old" GMA website. The other webmasters did everything
by using a program to create/maintain the website, and kept adding on
top of that. So by the time I got a hold of the website, it was
impossible to make slight changes because one person was using a
Netscape editor and another was using Microsoft Word which made the
code longer than usual. Plus the files and the folder system was very
messy. (For example, the same background image file was stored in 10
different folders, because each page was referencing the background
from a different location!) That is why no one updated the website for
about 6 years. In other words, I am trying to avoid all WYSIWYG HTML
editors like Dreamweaver/MS Word/etc. The code should be easy to
change from any computer at anytime regardless of the software. Keith
and I have done a great deal of work on the website to optimize the
HTML and make it readable, and hopefully the GMA will maintain that
philosophy. Sebastian is the current webmaster now, and he has
complete control, so you should talk to him if you think you can help.
Right now, he is working on an interface that does not use frames at
all which might take some time.

I do like the links that you suggested and perhaps they will be added
to the "other links" page. For the past events, we don't have anyone
that takes digital pictures for the GMA and document events. If
someone could take pictures and write down the names of the people
that are in the pictures then the Past Event page will be more
eventful.

I do like your website. You should really spruce up your math
department website to match!

Right now, I'm not going to change the layout of the site very much.
I'm going to convert the entire thing from using frames to using css.
Once that's done, it should actually be very easy to universally and
consistently change the layout to what ever we want. If we do decide
to do this, I only see two reasonable options. One is to make it even
more simple. No colors, nothing fancy at all. The other is to use one
of the templates provided by UF/Class See:
http://www.webadmin.ufl.edu/resources/templates/
http://clasnews.clas.ufl.edu/templates.html

Or a slight tweak of that. I like this option, because It would
establish some consistency with the general UF website. Though since
the department doesn't have this, maybe we shouldn't bother.

The other cosmetic change I want to make is to make sure that the site
conforms to the standards here:
http://clasnews.clas.ufl.edu/standards.html

Other than that, the thing that I really want to do is to make sure
the site has as much useful information as possible. Graham's
suggestions for additions are good. And I'd like more suggestions.
Any information that any one knows that would be useful to graduate
students should be put up there. And I'll add it eventually.

It would be nice to have all the PhD thesis information listed or at least have links to the appropriate pages.

I agree with what Jason said. In particular, I'm interested in seeing
this template I've heard so many horrible things about.

As far as the layout options go, I definitely like the CLAS template
and some of the UF templates. Our school colors are unfortunate from
a design standpoint, but these looks about as good as one can hope for
while still being recognizably "gatorish." I had no idea any of these
existed...is there any reason aside from inertia that the math
department doesn't use them? I would definitely vote for using them
if it were put to a vote, regardless of what the math department
does. I'm sure something like the faculty math template could be
easily modified for the GMA's purposes once we have a logo. I may use
it for my own page soon if and when I get around to actually designing
it.

Another link suggestion: I've been using a free program called LyX to
help me transition from WYSIWYG editors to LaTeX. It's basically a
LaTeX front end, so you can make LaTeX-quality documents without
having to actually know all the code ahead of time. It may be useful
for people new to and (intimidated by) LaTeX. I've been very pleased
with it; I can take notes with it at least as quickly as people
writing by hand without having to go home and type them up again
later. Versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux are available at http://www.lyx.org
.
