Hello fellow GLICers,

I hope you are all doing well and staying safe. I wanted to introduce
the new chair of GLIC,
Daniel Bojar, of the University of Gothenburg. He has agreed to take
on this position to
restart the activities of GLIC and take it to new places! :) Rene
Ranzinger and I will remain
as "co-chairs" to support as needed.

I'll let Daniel send an email to the list to introduce himself more
appropriately. He already
has some ideas for new activities!

Looking forward to being able to see you all again in person!

Best,
Kiyoko

Thank you for the introduction, Kiyoko!

Dear all,

great to meet you & I'm looking forward to working and interacting with you in the future! Looking through the group member, I have at least interacted with a few of you previously:-)

My group at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, has a great interest in applying data science & machine learning to glycobiology-related questions. We also maintain and develop glycowork, our Python package for glycan data science / machine learning.

We thought it would be a good idea to organize a glycoinformatics competition: by providing a dataset, a challenge/problem to do predictions, and a private testing dataset to evaluate and rank entries.
In data science, that's quite common to "crowd-source" solutions to problems or get people interested in a field. I think it would be a good opportunity to (i) get people from adjacent fields interested in glycoscience and (ii) allow for fresh approaches to problems. It's also asynchronous and therefore perfectly suited for our trans-continental community.
We have started some initial brainstorming but I would love to hear your thoughts/suggestions about topics for such a competition or anything related to this! The main goal of such an activity would be outreach/community building/education, with an added bonus of potentially new algorithms or methods, so even questions that have already been addressed at some point can be revisited by the crowd!

In any case, I hope you have a great week!
Daniel
