My son's dr just put him on a gluten free/ dairy free diet. We have
been gluten free for awhile now, but dairy free seems so hard to get
into! Are there supplements one must take? How does one get enough
calcium? What are good cheese alternatives you have found?

thanks!

Hang in there. It really isn't that bad once you get the hang of it. Eat your veggies and you'll get the calcium you need. We use rice milk in place of milk. Good luck. You'll get great feedback from this group.

It's been a little over a year now since I have been gluten/dairy/egg/corn free. Once you get use to it it is not too bad. I like to use Blue Diamond Almond Breeze in the sweetened vanilla flavor. I have also used a rice cheese, the cheddar I was not real happy with but the mozzarella was not bad. At the moment I can't tell you the brand since I don't have any in the house.

Hi,

Yes, it's hard to eliminate things from a diet, especially dairy!  We like coconut milk as a creamy substitute.  It's yummy in so many things, and healthy too!

As for calcium, you want to be careful not to overemphasize it by itself.  Remember it works in relation with the other vitamins and minerals.  You can look here to find foods that contain a lot of it:

In our home, we like bone broth (which is a carefully made delicious stock!), canned sardines (with the bone), chia seeds, sesame seeds, broccoli, and kale (which is easy to put in the food processor and hide in meatballs and sauces).  Almonds also are high in calcium.

If your son just won't eat any high calcium foods, then you may want to consider a supplement.

Cheese is tricky.  I have not found any cheese substitute that does not contain casein anyway.  But I've heard that it usually tastes bad.

hth,
Marla

Hi,
I know it can be overwhelming at first, but you will get the hang of it.
We use rice milk, I also buy oj that is fortified with calcium, I buy a yogurt that is made with coconut milk it is by so delicious, this is great because it has the probiotics that are especially helpful when you have had belly issues. The vegan gourmet makes a mozz cheese that is great, when melted. We usually shred it 1st. Most other cheese have casein even when they say dairy free. Also sunergie soy foods makes a flavored feta that is very good
tofutti has the best sour cream but the cream cheese leaves much to be desired.
I hope this is helpful.
good luck

Where do I purchase vegan gourmet cheese?  So sad that casin is in most cheese!  Is casin still vegan?  Have you found an alternative to the cheesy sauce for mac and cheese?  We eat trader joes rice mac and cheese but maybe need a substitute.  Do you know where to find rice macaroni all on its own?  Thanks for your assistance!  Where do you live? I live in Portland.

Sandy, Just chiming in with the yougurt - So Delicious, by the Turtle
Mountain Company, has a great coconut yogurt!
They have coconut ice cream, as well. Ricera has Rice based yogurt.
Luna and Larry's coconut bliss is another coconut ice cream option :)

i usually get vegan gourmet at earthfare or whole foods when we travel
casein is a milk protein so it is not vegan, to the best of my knowledge
rice pasta is pretty good, some are very starchy
tinkyada is a good brand
i have recently found rice pasta by De Boles at super target for 1/2 the price of tinkyada
as far as mac and cheese, i find mixing alittle of this and little of that is best but not quite the same
using the vegan sour cream really helped make it creamy

i live in charlotte, nc
i hope this is helpful

i know it does get so expensive
i don't know about goats milk
some people can tolerate it and some can't
you probably won't know unless you eliminate all dairy and then reintroduce it
best of luck

Roads End makes a Mac & Chreese - rice pasta with a yeast fake cheese sauce that works even for our crazy restrictions.....we also make our own homemade mac & cheese with a yeast gravy that also works great on all sorts of stuff.

Yes, I agree on the Tinkyada for the best pasta's.  I live in Florida, and also find corn spaghetti at my supermarket Publix.  I have only found the spaghetti version in corn...my kids would love the elbows or spirals too.  My kids suck it down so fast, my husband and I barely get anything to eat.  One thing not to rule out is once you find the brands of foods you like, just speak to the gm at your local supermarket.  Mine was very understanding and told me to make a list of the staples that they didn't have, and he would order whatever he could find, especially since they carried some similar stuff already.  I was traveling 2 hours to our Whole Foods, and now luckily have one only 45 mins away.  At least in between big trips, I have enough staples to get me through.  As for milk, my kids now love Silk milk and doesn't make much of a difference in cereal.  No luck on the cheese's here and the kids would probably love the coconut yogurt if I can find it.

Casein is not vegan.  It comes from cow's milk and can be listed in ingredients as sodium caseinate, calcium caseinate or milk protein.  I don't normally eat mac & cheese, but did find some gfcf mac & cheese at Whole Foods a few weeks ago.  Sorry, don't remember the brand name.  It definitely didn't resemble the Kraft stuff my husband eats, but it was good for a treat.  When I eat pasta, I generally get the Pasta Joy rice pasta made by Tinkyada (http://tinkyada.com/).  It has the best texture of all the rice pastas I've tried.  I find it in the "natural foods" section of Raleys/Bel Air stores and also at Whole Foods.  Don't know about other stores.

Even vegan cheeses contain caseins. Always read labels carefully. I like Namaste brand macaroni and cheese. The cheese like part is made from shelled hemp seeds. It has been my good alternative to regular macaroni and cheese.

Trader Joe's sells a pretty good rice pasta that is the cheapest I've found. The other brand Tiyaki ( I am spelling that wrong) really is good. They do have a soy yogurt that is pretty good and I believe a little bit cheaper than the coconut yogurt. Luna and Larry's Coconut Bliss is the best thing going!!! The dark chocolate is so delicious! We haven't found any good cheese alternatives. You'll be surprised how you won't crave it once you cut it out of your diet. It really just becomes a way of life. Good luck!

Go to www.coconutbliss.com and see where they sell it. Most health food stores will order things for you if you ask. Enjoy. This stuff is the best and sweetened with Agave. Good thing it is expensive or I would eat it every day!!!
