I have found out that I have celiac disease and I have a diary
intolerance. I've started grocery shopping, and wow, gluten free and
dairy free foods are going to break me! Any of you have suggestions or
tips to shop smart?

Hi,

My advice is firstly...don't worry, it's not as bad as it seems! You will just change what you eat and buy on a regular basis and just get used to that. Secondly, start to learn about nutrition and how to get what your body needs thru other sources. For example, as someone who is GF I realized it was tough to get fiber, but fiber is important to your diet, so find out what sources of food/grains are high in fiber AND gluten free also. An example, but if you know what I mean. Vitamin D and calcium will be tough for you without dairy. As for the other part about expensive. It IS expensive to buy gluten free, but not that expensive to buy ingredients that are gluten free and make stuff yourself. For example, bread. Get a bread machine! It takes me 15 minutes to make a loaf of bread and it's better and much cheaper than most any GF bread I've bought. There are tricks to making GF bread good, but you will find it is trial and error. One final thing, there is a silver lining. I found I eat much better than I ever did since I discovered I was intolerant to gluten and feel much better. I eat more whole and "real" foods than I used to. My diet is no longer heavy in junk food, beer, processed foods, etc...and that turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I am more fit and healthy than I was in years. I could talk on this for pages but those would be my initial thoughts.

Greg

Well i use this iPhone app called caloricious. It is for people who
want to stay healthy and people with food allergies. It's a search
engine so u can type in gf cookies and it will give you a list of
products that Are all available at your local store. It also lists out
additives harmful fat and has a nutrition label , so for me making
decisions is easy. I think u should try this app coz it really helped
me.
www.caloricious.com I think the iPhone app link is there just check it out

Hello Christie,

I enjoyed reading your blog.  I have an unusal problem since I am
not on gluten and dairy free, but also cannot tolerate soy, tomatoes,
mustard and beans.
This really does limit me and I also spend more than I would like
shopping at Natural Grocers.  Now I am off to Canada for vacation and
trying to shop for my trip is difficult since I will be camping.
Any suggestions? Barbara

Print cards on all the different names that Gluten falls in to and names for dairy.  There are many different ways that they are identified as on labels.  My daughter can't have the milk proteins or any form of it... My daughter doesn't have a disease yet, but has sensitivities and this has helped us at the grocery store when reading labels... always ask a restaurant if they have a gluten/dairy free menu.. best way to remember to eat is Fresh, Fresh, Fresh... stay away from processed foods.

Rita's Water Ice is safe for Gluten & Dairy Free (not the gelati's of course). I asked the manager of one what the ingredients were and he showed me his book..

Giant Grocery Stores have a small gluten free section
Walmart's are now creating gluten free sections
Wegman's is the best I have found for selection of Gluten & Dairy Free

Best Tip I can give you is be patient.. read labels, ask if your not sure .. and when in doubt leave it out...

Not all brands are created equal either.. don't stock up on anything in the beginning.
Great magazine to subscribe to is "Living Without"
Good Luck and Many Blessings!
You can do it!!!

It's is all so overwhelming to deal with at first, but it gets easier.
As for the bread maker... last year I found one on EBay, it's a Wolfgang Puck, re-furbished & has a gluten free setting.
For $49 you can't beat it.  They even give a recipe book with a gf bread recipe. Or you can buy mixes too.
More & more brands are coming out with gf options.  Chex has lots of gf cereals now & Betty Crocker cookies, brownies etc.
Boars Head lunchmeats are gf & dinners tend to be steak, chicken or pork chops.  When you think about what you're "giving up" it's really not that good for you anyway.
I'm sure with all the celebrities doing the gf diet....more food will become more available.
In Europe, Celiac is a wide spread problem, so gf foods are readily available there. My stepdaughter loves to go and the foods taste fabulous.
It's a shame we're so behind here, but hopefully soon.
Good Luck!

Christi

Really ...CHEX has GF cereal? I love my Mesa Sunrise cereal, but it is specialty and will be very happy when I see regular fortified cereal in the breakfast isle!
