According to a friend of mine who works at Reading Cinemas,  Milk will be playing on Feb 13.  I will double check and triple check, but my source is usually pretty reliable.

OK GLSSN:

I think I emailed wrong.  OK Listen up!  ASI is asking a specific date on when we can bring in Sacha Sacket.  I proposed a March date but considering timing and quarter relatives, the more sensible date would need to be sometime in Spring Quarter 2009.  Perhaps April in the start of the new quarter to freshen up the campus of returning students?  Please respond back with a date and I will congregate with the officers to discuss a set date for ASI.

A few things to note:
We are alotted $1000/quarter, but if the bargain exceeds our margins (from Sacha's manager), we can be approved up to $3000.  With that being said, if we NEED $3000, that's all we get until the following Spring Quarter year.  I have been notified that this is a case by case situation.  I still need to know performance fees, facility charges, promotion/publicity charges, food/catering situation, supply costs and any other miscellaneous items necessary.  I am now asking active members to help me conduct this wonderful event as Sacha Sacket's manager seems very interested in bringing the bright star to our campus!

If you like to be a part of the Festival Committee, please respond avidly and I will be glad to enlist you into the army!

Thanks!

I will attend either Mon/Wed during those operating hours of 200-500pm.  I would personally like to push for Monday, but do answer what is collectively a feasible date.  Thank you all for helping!

I think raising that much money that fast is unrealistic, given the low level of involvement of most members, and I also don't think we have any other expensive events in mind to sponsor for the rest of the year. But that's just my two cents. The only event I'm aware of is having Whitney Weddell come talk to us about activism one weekend evening, and watching a film about gays in Canada that Dr. Pratt has.

Hey everyone!
Sorry for my lack of input this quarter just been real
hectic with 25 units. I am def interested in being an
officer! I can attend the meeting Monday but only if it is
before 3:30 cause my daughter has a doctor appt.
Let me know what you all decide about the meeting!
I agree with Chrissy that it is a lot of money to spend on
one event and I truly think we need to start doing more
things around campus to raise money...like selling things
or having events a little less expensive to bring in
crowds...like get in touch with bowling alleys and see if
we can get a discount where part of the funds go to us or
using one of the multipurpose rooms and hosting a game
night (not a typical one but something where we set up
video games systems like Rock Band etc) and charge
admission. I think there are many other ways to spend the
clubs money! Just a thought!

In essence, the GLSSN club hasn't put on something this expensive in years, so I think to the best interest of the club is to shell out as much as possible to bring presence to the campus.  KEEP IN MIND, I do understand the ONLY CAVEAT is that we wont get another alotment until Spring '10.  So unless we're thinking ahead for more venues, how can we not object!?  Throw a pie at me, people!   ;)

several years ago, the community held a great drag show at the old Nile Theater, just before a packed-house viewing of the film "Priscilla Queen of the Desert." It was a great event! Based on the applause, one drag queen was chosen the winner. I wonder if those guys are still around? Ed? They had wonderful outfits and music they mimed to.... so that would be cheap....

For future meetings, let's talk about a booth for Pride Day in Bakersfield (IT'S IN THE FALL). I'll buy some CSUB tee shirts and we can raffle them off, getting some "business" at our booth? Maybe a poetry segment during the day?

West Hollywood Gay Pride Parade and Festival is June 12-14 this year, and is a blast! They expect 400,000 parade goers this year. Get there early to get to the front to watch the parade. Maybe some GLSSN members could ride-share down one day?

The meeting can start at 3 instead of 3:30, so Summer can come by, and go until 4.

A few things:
I am fairly sure that events must be free and open to the public to get ASi funds, so we could not charge $5 even if we cast it as a donation.

Since we have the money available and have no other plans immediately, I think it makes sense to spend it on the concert, but again, that's just my opinion.

If members want to do fundraising, great, but there is a lot of money available through ASi to sponsor events, so unless we have a particular goal in mind, our energies might be spent more usefully on activism and organizing events. Again, that's just my opinion. It's a luxury to have this funding available and not to have spend a lot of time selling brownies.

I like Judith's idea, I had something similar in mind, I
even contacted Logo and a couple studios that have
upcoming movies (Gay Oriented) out that would be willing
to let us use them for a fundraiser event. One of the
studios I contacted was happy to oblige. The movies are "I
Can't Even Think Straight" and "The World Unseen" both
movies opened to limited engagements and have yet to be
released on DVD. Aida Katten who is in charge of
production was excited about the concept of bringing two
such controversial movies to a small town like
Bakersfield. I think if I hear back from Logo we could get
a pretty diverse showing of movies and maybe put on an all
day film festival and close it with an evening drag show.
Anyone else's thoughts???

1/ Saturday, March14 is our day to host Whitney and her friends. BDC 153 is an arena-type room which I will (try to ) reserve today. Start at 3 or 4, have Whitney talk while we all enjoy some snacks and sodas. Then we have a Q&A with her, and then watch a film of mine, FORBIDDEN LIVES, about the history of gays in Canada.

2/ Ed is checking with ASi about whether or not we HAVE to have the cafeteria provide food, or if we can brig in pre-packaged food (Subway sandwiches, Bee's cookies, etc.?)

3/Judith is checking with Reprographics about doing a banner for GLSSN to use at our events.

4/ Judith will ask Taren in ASi about getting tee shirts. Bee will send Judith the template. Approval for the design and maybe we can get some before our March get together.

5/ Ed is canceling his talks with Sasha, as it is too expensive for the purpose of getting GLSSN's name out there. Instead, we think Summer's idea of a film festival and Ed's of a drag show would make a great evening's fun. So Summer is checking with the film contacts she has made already. ed will talk with the Fantasy Girls and the Nicole Whitneys. Maybe rent the Nile Theater? Ed knows the owner so he will check. Judith will check if there is an alternative sound system to the horrible one in the MPR in the Student Union.

6/ Summer suggests we rent a bus for GLSSN to go to the Long Beach Pride Festival Saturday, May 16. It would then be free for GLSSN members and a guest (?) but the cost to get into the festival (after the parade) would be up to members.

7/ in the Fall, Summer suggests we reserve a CSUB GLSSN booth for the Bakersfield Pride Day. We can raffle off tee shirts, hang our banner and get some interest.

8/ We will have an election coming up for officers for next year. Paperwork will have to be changed at the ASi office.
