to Glow Announce
Greetings,

Glow 2.0.0 Alpha1 is now available for download from http://bbc.co.uk/glow/download/.

This is a preview release of some upcoming changes to the Glow
library, it is primarily intended for developers and testers wishing
to find out about some of the new features and tweaks we're making to
the core Glow APIs.

Overview
=======

This release contains the new core, DOM and events modules, which have
received a significant overhaul to improve the API, extend the range
of CSS selectors and significantly boost performance.

A more complete introduction to the changes is given in the README
file, including lots of sample code. If you don't want to download the
zip file, this can also be viewed directly at http://github.com/glow/glow2/blob/RB_2.0/README.
API documentation is provided in the download, for the time being it's
not available from the website like the Glow 1 docs.

We hope to follow up this announcement with more in depth coverage of
the changes we've made, including some analysis of the performance
improvements over Glow 1. These details will hopefully appear on
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/webdeveloper/ in the next few weeks.

What's next?
==========

Our focus is now switching to the Glow widgets, which we plan to
overhaul with more consistent accessibility features, and a new look
and feel that complements the BBC's new Global Visual Language (http://
www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcinternet/2010/02/a_new_global_visual_language_f.html).
The type and range of widgets is going to change, and we'll be
introducing many more powerful features to make the widgets do far
more "out-of-the-box" than before.

We've already begun work on this, and hope to release some new widget
features at the end of March.
