Attention: G. B. Clark

Our cousins, Loral Dean and David Mowat, have prepared a few dossiers regarding family members from the Woodburn family (Cyrville), and I am forwarding this e-mail along to them as I am certain they would be happy to share this information with the Gloucester Historical Society.

Thank you for your e-mail and for providing me with the correct e-mail address.

Regards

Sherry and Doug Woodburn

The Gloucester Historical Society welcomes receiving copies of family
histories. We have many of them in our files which are available for
research to any visitor at the Grace Johnston History Room in our
Leitrim office.

Thanks for the message.

Mr. Clark:
I was able to drop by your offices GHS last Monday, Sept. 1st,; unfortunately nobody was available, no volunteer, but the doors were opened. I would have liked to do some research on two Cyrville primary schools...Ste-Thérèse and St.Joseph, photos and other documents. These schools were under the teachings of the Grey Nuns, at the time. The French Catholic School Board of Eastern Ontario has NO documentation whatsoever! Neither do the Grey Nuns congregation in Ottawa.I hope to have better luck next time.

Dear Michael,

I am sorry we are only open by appointment or during meetings and this summer we were open every Thursday but that ended the week before Labour day.  Our next meeting will be on Saturday, September 13th from 9:30 a.m. until about Noon and this is open to the public.   I am not sure why the building was open when you came by but I suspect that City of Ottawa museum staff were working in the back room.

There is a photograph of Ste. Therese School in the Gloucester Photo Collection but you will need to go to the City of Ottawa Archives to see the photo or to order a copy of it.  There should be a photocopy (not suitable for reproduction) at our office.  Would you please tell me the exact location of this school?  The following particulars  will assist City of Ottawa archives staff to locate the photo.

0080003301 Box A 1937 photo of Ste. Therese School with students and teachers.

I was able to locate the following newspaper article about St. Joseph school.  You need to scroll down to the bottom of the page.  I presume this school was located in Orléans.

http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2194&dat=19830112&id=JqQyAAAAIBAJ&sjid=Fu8FAAAAIBAJ&pg=6170,605673  News story about St. Joseph School in 1983 presumably after it had closed.

There is a photo of the original St. Joseph school in the book Orléans 150 ans d’histoire.  This is the history book produced by St. Joseph parish in 2010. This building was replaced in more recent years.  There may be additional photos in another book that recently commemorated several plaques installed on St. Joseph Boulevard.  The above mentioned book tells some of the history of the school.

It may be worth a look at the Glen Ogilvie Tweedsmuir History which is at our office.  This generally covered the area between Cyrville and Blackburn.

I also understand you are interested in a photo of Star Top Drive-in.  Unfortunately, I cannot find one.  You may wish to try the City of Ottawa Archives.  It seems that Ottawa’s old Drive-in’s were not well photographed compared to movie theatres.  I have not seen photographs of any of them although I remember most of them.

Sincerely,

Glenn Clark
