Hi Jean-Claude,

The Gloss sister pronunciation is a matter of emphasis.  When you say the last two syllables quickly and with less emphasis, it can sound like ‘sister’ in English.

Hello,

In English-speaking Canada, as far as I know, there is only one valid pronunciation and that's Gloss'ter

In French-speaking Canada, the pronunciation is Gloss'sess'ter

I have no idea where you picked up the Gloss'sister pronunciation.

Subject: What is the correct pronunciation of Gloucester?

I entered into an interesting discussion on the proper pronunciation of Gloucester with a long-time Gloucester resident a few months ago.  It was thought provoking.  Something you don't think about from day to day.   The claim was made that the pronunciation has changed over the years.

This was followed by another discussion at the March GHS Board meeting and then another lively debate at a family get together this past weekend.  There was not consensus.

What do you think?

Is there a correct pronunciation for Gloucester?

Has the pronunciation changed over the years?

What is the popular pronunciation today?

We came up with three possible pronunciations as follows:

1.  Gloss´ ter

2.  Gloss´ sister

3.  Gloss sess´ ter

Are there others actually used by Gloucester residents?

Let us know your opinion

Hi Glenn,
Yes, you are right.
However, I'll keep on with my pronunciation, which is Gloss'ter
Nice having a chit-chat with you
