Hello,

As you all know opening Gmail takes a helluva time in this college. So here is a small idea. All you need is:

1. Shanmail (<dept>.sastra.edu) ids.
2. Enable IMAP in your Gmail settings.

Steps:
1. Login to your shanmail.
2. Goto Preferences -> Mail -> Accounts
3. Click on "Add External Account"
4. Enter the following details.

Email address : your gmail address (along with @gmail.com) eg: b...@gmail.com
Account Name: any name of your choice

Account type: IMAP
Username of account: fills in automatically as you enter your email address (it is your login id only w/o the "@gmail.com")
Email server : imap.gmail.com

Password : enter your gmail password

Advanced settings :
Change IMAP port - UNCHECKED
Use an encrypted connection (SSL) while accessing this server - CHECKED

5. Click on the "SAVE" button.
6. Wait till the test says success and click OK.
7. The mails will take some time to download.

and Voila... ready to go. Now you can send and receive Gmail on your shanmail. This is faster because the it works on no proxy.

Important Point:
1. See to that your gmail size is no more than 1 GB!!!
2. Dont not use any proxy i.e. use NO PROXY.

Thanks for sharing this useful content. It works well.
Even for the account type pop3 it is working fine.

Hi

For people who are in a dilema onto what protocol to use :

POP3 does not downloaded your labels and also e-mail clients using POP
generally connect, retrieve all messages, store them on the user's PC,
delete them from the server (different mail servers provide different
preferences onto what to do after a mail has been accessed using POP).
IMAP accesses the mail directly from the server using complex remote
access operations.

So, if you are accessing mail from only one client, POP is best. But
if you access mail from various clients IMAP is preferable as it keeps
you account synchronized.
