Dear GSIA Members and Friends,

You are warmly invited to the final GSIA in-person talk of the 2024/25 winter season as noted below.

Date: Tuesday, 29 April 2025 at 7.30pm

Venue: Gloucestershire Heritage Hub (Gloucester Archives)

Title: The Newport Transporter Bridge

Speaker: Jeff Grosvenor, Trustee of The Friends of Newport Transporter Bridge

Worldwide, fewer than two dozen transporter bridges have been built. A number have been demolished, but approximately ten remain in operational use today, albeit some not in full operational use.

The Newport Transporter Bridge was designed by French engineer Ferdinand Arnodin and opened in 1906.  The Bridge is the lowest crossing point on the River Usk.  Why was a transporter bridge design selected?

What does the future hold for this Grade 1 listed structure?

This should be another interesting evening.

We hope you will join us.
