The ATP Masters events, known as ATP Masters 1000 tournaments since 2009, are an annual series of nine tennis tournaments featuring the top-ranked players on the ATP Tour since its inception in 1990.[1] The Masters tournaments, sitting below the Grand Slam tournaments and the year-end championships, make up the most coveted trophies on the annual ATP Tour calendar. In addition to the quadrennial Summer Olympics, they are collectively known as the 'Big Titles'.[2]
Novak Djokovic holds the record for the most Masters singles titles with 40.[3] By completing the career set of all nine Masters series singles titles in 2018, Djokovic became the first and only player to achieve the career Golden Masters.[4] In 2020, Djokovic completed a second career Golden Masters.[5]
The Masters series was introduced in 1990 with the inception of the ATP Tour by bringing together the nine most prestigious tournaments of the preceding Grand Prix Circuit of the Grand Prix Super Series. Results in ATP Masters events earn players more ranking points than regular tournaments but less than Grand Slam events or the year-end ATP Finals. Up until 2007, most Masters finals were contested as best-of-five-set matches, but from 2008 all events were decided in best-of-three-set matches.
As part of a shake-up of the tennis circuit in 2009, the Masters Series became the ATP Tour Masters 1000, with the addition of the number 1000 referring to the number of ranking points earned by the winner of each tournament. Contrary to earlier plans, the number of tournaments was not reduced from nine to eight and the Monte-Carlo Masters remained part of the series although, unlike the other events, it does not have a mandatory player commitment. The Hamburg Masters event was downgraded to an ATP Tour 500 event. The Madrid Masters moved to May and onto clay courts. A new tournament in Shanghai replaced the Hamburg Masters and took over Madrid's former October indoor slot. In 2011, six of the nine Masters level tournaments were combined ATP and WTA events.
Currently, the following nine tournaments are part of the ATP Masters 1000: Canadian Open (alternating yearly between Montreal and Toronto), Italian Open (held in Rome), Indian Wells Open, Miami Open, Monte-Carlo Masters, Madrid Open, Cincinnati Open, Shanghai Masters and Paris Masters.[9] Since 2009, five of the tournaments have been held on outdoor hard courts, three on clay and one on indoor hard court, whereas from 1990 until 2008 there were two indoor tournaments at the top-9 level.

Often headlined by the best tennis players in the world -- Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams and others -- their performances on the tennis court reflects their positions in the rankings.
However, for every Grand Slam or mandatory ATP Tour Masters 1000 tournament a player is not in the main draw owing to valid reasons (either not qualified or injured), the number of results from other eligible tournaments within the 52-week period that count towards rankings is increased by one.
Towards the end of the year, the ATP Finals are played with the top eight ranked singles players and doubles pairs preceding the tournament. For qualified players, the ATP Finals is considered as a bonus 20th tournament and the points earned counts in their ranking.

For any player/pair, especially in the top 30 rankings, who qualify for these Masters 1000 events, participation in all barring the Monte Carlo Masters is mandatory. Exceptions are made in case of special circumstances like injuries or personal issues.
Like the ATP Finals, the WTA Finals can be a bonus tournament for whoever qualifies. However, unlike the ATP Finals, where ATP Rankings determine qualification, the WTA Finals qualifiers list is based on a different leaderboard maintained specifically for the tournament.

Gstaad is located around 3,450 feet above sea level, making this tournament one of the highest on the ATP Tour. It is only lower than Ecuador Open held in the Andes. The male-only game is currently sponsored by EFG International, a global banking group, hence the name.
The tournament had difficulties attracting big names for a while because of the altitude and a rugged trail to conquer on your way up to Gstaad, so they opted to pay travel expenses of the players along with awarding them even for just playing. In 1954 the winners were gifted gold watches.
Monte-Carlo Masters is the second exclusively male professionals tournament on our list, taking place in the Roquebrune-Cap-Martin commune in the French Alps during the Spring months. The current champion is Stefanos Tsitsipas in singles, while Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury hold the titles in doubles.
The central court at the Monte-Carlo Country Club where the tournament takes place is named after Rainier III, who ruled Monaco as a Prince for over 50 years. The prince was married to iconic Hollywood actress Grace Kelly, who became Princess Grace of Monaco until she died in 1982.
The Austrian Open takes place in July in Kitzbhel, a ski resort in the Alps. Formerly known as the Generali Open Kitzbhel, this annual tournament is a part of the ATP World Series, but it was downgraded to ATP World Tour 250 series in 2009.
Current champions are Roberto Bautista Agut for singles, while Pedro Martnez and Lorenzo Sonego hold the title for doubles. The tournament changed locations over the years, starting with Prague, Vienna, and Portschach, before switching to Kitzbhel in 1968.
