Dear colleagues

You know I tend to be liberal with my exclamation points, but this opportunity is really fantastic, and rare.

A postdoctoral research fellowship has opened up at BYU's Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship. This opportunity is right up the alley of scholars in the GMS Research Network. Being a BYU position, I'd have to note that it is the best fit for people who are practicing members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

I've spoken with members of the search committee who tell me that the salary is competitive with other postdocs in the U.S.. Full medical benefits--but not retirement benefits--are provided. Support for a J-1 visa or something similar is available. I am on the advisory board of the Maxwell Institute and the culture of the institution is collegial, friendly, and dedicated to serious scholarship.

This postdoc would put you at the center of the Mormon Studies storm, officing with Terryl and Fiona Givens, Phil Barlow, Catherine Taylor, and others. You would be right on the BYU campus in a new, beautiful, bespoke Maxwell Institute space. You would be on campus with the BYU Special Collections and within easy reach of the Church History Library in SLC.

Please spread this job announcement widely! Let's find the best candidates from around the world and put them in front of the search committee! They will start reviewing applications from May 1st. Applications close June 1st.

See the ad below. You may have to create a BYU login to apply. Contact Phil Barlow, search committee chair, or Catherine Taylor, also on the search committee, for specific details.

Finally: If you are a more senior scholar who will not be applying for this opportunity, but who would be interested in mentoring someone from our community who is (reading over their application materials, for instance, and helping them craft their research narrative, edit the CV, etc.) will you please reply to this list and report your availability? If you respond and say you're willing to be a mentor, I will keep your address and availability "on file" as it were, for future applications, not just this one.

Best
Melissa
