Hi,

I'm looking for a freelance editor for the book I have been writing for the last 3-8 years.

I'd prefer someone with a background in religious studies (Mormon studies and comparative religious studies in particular), geography, military operations, peace & conflict studies. I know that's a tall order but I think I'm close enough to be dangerous, but am still unsure what to do.

Thanks,

Logan

Hi Logan,

First I have to say you have an extensive shopping list. Lol This generally happens when writers/researcher are newish to publication.

I think a better approach is to ask people if they could recommend editors they have worked with. Generally as a rule your never going to find your unicorn with that exact skill set.

Currently, I work with Cambridge Proofreading & Editing. I mainly work with Pia she is awesome. in...@cambridgeproofreading.com

Logan, hello! I’m an editor myself but at the moment I am swamped and not taking on any new clients. However, can I recommend that you post the job at the Editorial Freelancers Association website?

And maybe this information would be helpful for other people on this email list as well, so here is an overview for people who are interested:

The EFA is an outstanding organization of professional freelancers; I’ve been a member myself for over a decade. It’s free for authors to post a job for hire, though the board recommends that you make sure that the job listing is within the parameters of the EFA’s rate chart (https://www.the-efa.org/rates/). (If you lowball your rates, the job listing will not be posted.)

You should also read other authors’ job listings to get a sense of what to include (e.g., what level of editing you need, what the word count is, whether the book is under contract with a publisher, which style guide you are using, etc.), and go through all the “Hiring Basics” on the EFA’s website: https://www.the-efa.org/hiring/). You can also search the member directory for various editors’ areas of specialization. I don’t think you’ll find someone with all of the specializations you mention below, but certainly there are editors who specialize in military history and some who specialize in religion.

I’ve occasionally used the EFA myself when I needed to subcontract something for one of my authors (with the author’s permission, of course). Most recently, an author I am working with on turning his dissertation into a book needed someone to edit several articles he and his colleagues were submitting to medical journals. That is a specialized kind of editing with an entirely different style guide, and I don’t have that particular training. So I edited the articles for content and organization, but then in the final stages I posted a job listing for the AMA copy editing, so someone else could bring the articles into AMA style. Within a day I had received several inquiries from highly qualified and experienced people, and I was able to hire one of them with that particular skill set.

Good luck!
Jana

Have fun listening to NotebookLM's summarization of the book right now as it stands!

Hi,

Does anyone have contact for Sarah Peris? She seems to have the best background for this, having edited for the Joseph Smith Papers and the Naval Postgraduate School. It's helpful to have someone who can speak in both of my worlds.

Thanks,
Logan
