PURPOSES

This position supports the division's assignment to provide timely, relevant, and reliable information to General Authorities and Church administrators to help them respond to the diverse challenges and opportunities of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as it shares its message throughout the world.

The Researcher 3 is the fully functioning journey level position. Under general supervision the incumbent uses social research methods and skills to coordinate project efforts, perform advanced level tasks (e.g. advanced research design, data collection, analysis, and reporting) to support senior research staff in fulfilling approved information requests and projects.

Please note candidates may be offered a Researcher 2 or Researcher 3 position based on their level of education and years of experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Research 60% - Design research to answer client questions. Collect, analyze, and interpret data. Produce research reports and products for sharing results.
Consultation 15% - Consult with clients to provide useful information and answers to their questions and issues.
Scholarship 10% - Develop expertise in a topic area.  Develop conceptual products that synthesize ideas in a topic area.
Leadership 10% - Direct study teams. Help colleagues solve problems. Ensure the review of plans and products.
Management 5% - Seek innovative ways of solving problems and improving products.  Assist in some administrative tasks.  Manage risks appropriately (legal, data privacy, etc.).

Success:  Prompt, accurate, relevant, and understandable products and services.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
   Master's or PhD degree in the social/behavioral sciences or closely related field.
Work Experience:
    Five to seven years professional experience in the social/behavioral sciences or closely related field.
Demonstrated Skills & Abilities:
   Ability to think critically and solve problems.
   Good verbal and written communication skills.
   Good organizational and interpersonal skills.
   Ability to work under pressure on multiple projects.
   Work effectively as a member of project teams.

WORTHINESS QUALIFICATION

Must be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and currently temple worthy.

PURPOSES

Research Intern – up to 1 year (20 hrs./week)

Correlation Research Division – Correlation Department

The Correlation Research Division (CRD) is a division of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and is responsible for research review and oversight, with a commission to (1) provide timely, relevant, and reliable information to Church leaders, (2) coordinate research by other headquarters organizations involving contact with Church ecclesiastical leaders and members, and (3) conduct a regular assessment of Church programs, products, and materials.

The studies we conduct are interesting, challenging, and wide-ranging in scope. They include research on religious processes, evaluation of program implementation and outcomes, and the development and monitoring of key social and religious trends.

This internship entails providing support to applied religious researchers in a dynamic, team-oriented environment. Interns may be involved in all or various phases of research as part of a research team. They will also review research proposals, instruments, reports, or presentations prepared by other researchers.

BYU students who are currently working for BYU are not eligible to accept a paid internship at the Church and work concurrently at BYU.

RESPONSIBILITIES

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:  Interns must be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a social science or closely-related graduate program (e.g., educational inquiry, measurement and evaluation; marriage, family and human development; psychology; public administration; school psychology; social work; sociology).

Interns may not be concurrently employed by other LDS Church entities including BYU and LDSBC.

Computer literacy and ability to handle a variety of software applications is expected (e.g., spreadsheet, data analysis including Stata and/or SPSS, word processing). Graduate course experience is preferred.

Research Skills:  Ability to conduct or assist professional researchers in some or all phases of applied basic research and program evaluation studies including:

  • Conceptualizing research questions
  • Reviewing research literature
  • Developing research design and instruments
  • Gathering quantitative and qualitative data
  • Analyzing data using statistical software (e.g., Stata, SPSS) and qualitative analytic techniques (e.g., content analysis)
  • Developing conclusions, implications, and recommendations
  • Preparing power point presentations and presenting research findings

 Other Requirements

  • A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in good standing
  • Ability to work at Church headquarters in Salt Lake City
  • Up to 20 hours/week for a maximum one year internship
  • Maintain confidentiality of research, which is proprietary
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to write and present research to decision makers and other non-technical audiences
