Can COP 27 Follow Through on Climate Finance Commitments?India to need 2,300bn units of power by 2030, can generate only 2,024bn: Report Syria increases gas production, hopes for more electricity

The year 2022 has been a testament to some harsher and grimmer climate extremes. A once-in-a-500-year drought in Europe, flooding across South Asia ravaging lives and livelihoods, Pakistan and Philippines being the most hit, and extreme heat waves across many parts of the globe are breaching all thresholds. As the world witnesses the throes of climate extremes, the 27th Conference of Parties (COP 27) begins with an emblematic note that includes a discussion on loss and damage in the main agenda of the conference.     Read more...

India’s electricity consumption is expected to grow at an annual rate of 5.4 per cent over the next decade, with annual demand touching 2300 billion units by 2030, according to the latest study released on Tuesday by Arthur D. Little, a global management consulting firm.

However, at the current pace, generation will reach only 2024 billion units by 2030, highlighting the need for reforms in capacity addition. “There is therefore a need for increased Read more...

FURUQLUS: Newly installed turbine compressors at a gas facility in central Syria will lead to a production increase that will help ease the war-torn country's electricity crisis, officials at the sprawling facility said Wednesday.

The Syrian Gas Co. facility in the central province of Homs suffered a series of attacks during Syria's 11-year conflict, including the kidnapping of staff, a suicide car bomb, barrages of rockets and strikes by drones that killed 11 people at the facility, according t   Read more...
Developing nations need $2.4 trillion to tackle climate change, says ReportAmazon India and TVS Motors join hands to scale EV deploymentOil & gas emissions 3 times higher than figures being reported, shows data released at COP27

Developing countries, other than China, will require $2.4 trillion a year by 2030 if they are to comprehensively tackle climate change and grow their economies.

A report, jointly commissioned by the governments of the UK and Egypt released at COP27, also estimated that emerging markets and developing countries, other than China, will require $1 trillion by 2025 to cut emissions, boost resilience and deal with the loss and Read more...

New Delhi: Amazon India and TVS Motors Company on Wednesday announced their collaboration to strengthen electric mobility, electric infrastructure and connected services. A fleet of electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers from the automaker will be deployed for the e-commerce giant’s last-mile deliveries. “In addition, the two companies will work in tandem to examine EV use cases for various Amazon business groups for its network and logistical requirements," Amazon India said in a press release.Read more...

Emissions from oil and gas production worldwide are significantly underreported and are estimated to be three times higher, according to new data released at the UN climate summit (COP27) on Wednesday.

Climate Trace -- a non-profit coalition of organizations which monitors greenhouse gas emissions and publishes emissions inventories using satellite data, artificial intelligence and machine learning -- said half of the 50 largest sources of emissions across the world are oil and gas production fields and their associated facilities.Read more...

Greenfield coal-based plants to have mandatory renewable power generation clause India saved over USD 4 bn in fuel costs through solar power from Jan to June: A high-speed sequential deposition strategy to fabricate photoactive layers for organic cells

To enhance renewable energy capacity in the country, the Power Ministry aims to make it compulsory for any thermal power producer aiming to set up a new generating capacity after April 1, 2024, to either set up or procure renewable energy capacity equivalent to it.

To implement this, it plans to bring out an amendment in the Tariff Policy 2016 to include the provision of "renewable generation obligation (RGO)". Read more...

New Delhi: India saved USD 4.2 billion in fuel costs through solar generation in the first half of 2022 and 19.4 million tonnes of coal that would have further stressed an already strained domestic supply, according to a new report released on Thursday.

The report by energy think tank Ember, the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air and the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis  Read more...

Organic photovoltaics, solar energy devices based on organic semiconductors, have so far achieved very promising results in experimental settings, both in terms of efficiency and stability. However, engineers have not yet devised reliable strategies to fabricate these devices on a large-scale at a reasonable cost. Researchers at Wuhan University in China have recently identified an approach that could facilitate the rapid fabrication of photoactive layers for organic solar cells, without Read more...

Tata Power Renewable Energy to set up 150MW solar project in MaharashtraAI helps optimize power electronic converters

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power, announced on November 9 that it has received the "Letter of Award" (LoA) from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Corporation Limited (MSEDCL) to set up a 150MW solar project in Solapur, Maharashtra.

The LoA was won through tariff-based competitive bidding followed by an e-reverse auction. The project will be commissioned within 18 months from the PPA execution date, the company said in a statement. Read more...

A new and more efficient way of modeling and designing power electronic converters using artificial intelligence (AI) has been created by a team of experts from Cardiff University and the Compound Semiconductor Applications (CSA) Catapult. The method has reduced design times for technology by up to 78% compared to traditional approaches and was used to create a device with an efficiency of over 98%.The team's findings have been published in the IEEE Open Journal of Power Electronics and EEE Transactions on Power Electronics.Read more...
