Hello,

When we had the meeting we discssed light pollution, what happend to this?? We need an specific challenge, not all the challenges which ar potential for singapore.. We, the businees group, are suppose to find a solution to the challenge and the other groups are suppose to find other things about this one challenge.. This one challenge we chose is light pollution so the ecology team need to write the abstract about this.! The meeting is recorded if you guys did not listen.

Please write the abstract more specifically towards lighr pollution. There is no possible way to find a texhnical solution for "pollution" so please do not write this as our challenge.

From the business group

Hello from Chris Fleshren. Our two person Ecology Team was unable to attend the second WebEx meeting because we had classes--and one of us had an exam. Regarding listening to the recording of the WebEx meeting- I tried, but I was unable to Log-on. I have been communicating this problem with the Facilitator and I am still waiting to hear back from the last email I sent the Facilitator just after 9pm Thursday. I emailed the Abstract to the Group for editing consideration, concerns and comment just after 2AM this morning (Friday). As of early this afternoon, I received no response, which I interpreted as the Group's satisfaction with the Abstract. It is unfortunate that not everyone can check their emails in the morning, but I guess each Team should make sure that at least one Team member checks emails each morning and shares time-sensitive info as needed. Like with the last-minute scheduling of the first WebEx meeting-- we are all juggling our personal schedules with task force deadlines. Ecology began working in earnest on the Abstract not long after we received the detailed instruction email about the Abstract from Professor Valdez on Thursday afternoon. Admittedly, it was not the Professor's responsibility to remind us- in that email- that the abstract should focus on only one ecological issue. Ecology apologizes for not drafting the Abstract correctly, but in our defense, we were unable to attend the meeting or access the recording, we got no response from our "Abstract edit opportunity email", and the meeting that decided-on 'Light Pollution' was held less than 48 hours before Ecology needed to submit the Abstract (due to our Friday class schedules). We regret there was not more "review" time before the submission deadline. In the future, Ecology will continue to work as quickly as possible on our responsibilities, and we will continue to try to be available and communicate as well as we can.
For the duration of this task force, it might be a good idea to have someone reach-out to any Team that has no representation in a meeting, especially if 'that' Team has a crucial role in the submission of looming deliverable deadline. So, moving forward, Ecology will email the Facilitator with a request to edit the 'already-submitted' Abstract to reflect the majority's decision of Light Pollution. However, Ecology never encountered "Light Pollution" during our research so will someone please forward the 5 peer-reviewed Light Pollution Reference Sources to Ecology--because they will need to be included in the edit of the Abstract.

Thank You, Chris-- and the Ecology Team

Hello,

It is unfortunate that we are having complications. I think we should start sending out a report from the meetings we have, so everyone knows what is going on. I have talked to the facilitator and I am under the impression that we can still choose light pollution.

"If you feel you should address the original challenge to complete the assignment, that might be fine."

Are there anyone who do not agree with the challenge "light pollution" or has any other suggestions? If not, the business group will start our assignment which is due on friday, where we are suppose to find possible solutions to the challenge. Here are some links about light pollution:

http://library.thinkquest.org/04apr/00533/Astronomy%20Web%20Site/lightpollution.htm
http://www.lightpollution.it/istil/index.html

I hope everyone is happy with this choice. Also, Where is the leadership team??

Hello from Chris in the Ecology Team, sounds good Ingrid. I also emailed the Facilitator and she led me to believe she will accept an amended Abstract from Ecology. I am working on that Abstract now--which focuses strictly on Light Pollution. I still need peer-reviewed sources for the Reference section. I found plenty of 'general' information for the effects of Light Pollution, but not much that is specific to Singapore. These sources are important for our scientific support of whatever solutions the Business Team discovers. Please send me peer reviewed "Singapore Light Pollution" sources ASAP. In addition to Ingrid's links, here a few more that might help with the research and provide data for our website.

Interesting Singapore specific lighting info:

http://www.ura.gov.sg/lightingplan/main.htm

Interesting generic lighting info:

Thanks, Chris Fleshren-- Ecology Team 34

Okay, sounds great! How many links do you think we'll need ? so far I have found these

http://www.numbeo.com/pollution/country_result.jsp?country=Singapore
http://lightpollutionsg.tripod.com

Everyone should keep searching. I do not think we need more "proof" than this though, as it is somewhat obvious. There is a lot of forums and blogs about this, but I am not sure it would be counted as valid resources? By the way, where have you read that we are making a website? This is something the business team is unaware of.

Again, where is everyone else? Everyone should contribute.

Ingrid-business team.

Hey Ingrid, my professor said 5 links, but he was going to check on 'that' , but we did not hear back on this issue. We probably did not hear back because he probably no longer considered it an issue because everyone's Abstract should already have been submitted by now... which, like you said, is why we need to still search collaboratively for peer-reviewed sources.
Now regarding the links you sent, thanks, I'll add them to my collection. It is kind of strange however, that they linked 'noise and light' pollution together into a single percentage... I don't know what to make of that.
Now regarding 'the website', I don't know if all Teams have to do 'this', but my syllabus for the semester says:

"Goal 3A Deliverable and Website/Poster/Presentation: You should collect as many behaviors related to your problem as possible and rank order them from the most important to least. You do not have to have a specific number of problems that are required, but you have to work with two other teams and give them as many options under the main topic as possible will decrease the contention in your Team."

It does not describe the website further, but it does describe the details about our Poster presentation... I guess I / we will learn more about this as time goes on... maybe its just for us in for Virginia after our Group discusses it all???

I have most of the amended Abstract completed except for the sources-- as soon as I finish it I will share it for everyone's input.

Thanks, Chris Fleshren, Ecology 34
