00:26:27    Marc L:    Hello everyone. My t-Mobile home internet connection is so slow, I have turned my video off.
00:27:11    Bryan McAlley Chailey Repair Cafe UK:    No we don’t want your President thanks - yet…..!
00:27:34    Bryan McAlley Chailey Repair Cafe UK:    But the good news is that Boris has just dropped out….
00:28:06    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    hope I don't offend anyone by saying that is GOOD news
00:29:07    Marc L:    We have a used, slightly orange US president available, though like Boris, he has some current legal issues pending. ;-)
00:32:01    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    ifixit has TERRIFIC customer service. I got one TINY little defective component in one of their tool kits and they sent me a whole new, profoundly UPGRADED kit as a replacement, IMMEDIATELY.
00:33:07    Marc L:    I had the opposite experience. My tool handle was missing a tiny magnet, I wrote to their support dept (via the web page?) and heard nothing at all.
00:37:16    Gregg Ferry:    Laura, here in San Diego, got a 5G hot spot for our clinics.  Very important because we can show people how to search for their fixit needs.
00:40:08    Gregg Ferry:    which came first, the 3D printer or the 3D printed parts? ;)
00:40:48    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    a SHIPPING container! now that's what I call REPURPOSING
00:40:53    Marc L:    Peter kindly gave me a magnet. Now to get a replacement for a lost handle for another kit. Not seen on the web site. ;-\
00:58:49    Gregg Ferry:    Is there a "best practices" document?  For example, "take a picture before and after removing a part"
01:01:58    Amber:    ifixit.com/new
01:03:35    Amber:    meta.ifixit.com
01:09:13    Chris Setz, Tottenham, UK:    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-63245150
01:10:35    Marc L:    How much more are you willing to pay for a modular device? IIRC, a study or two has been done, and at least one project has failed due to the high cost. OTOH, upgradeable may be a viable option.
01:12:03    DanielO:    Built to last better than mtbf ()mean time between failure  as busines plan for design
01:12:23    Chris Setz, Tottenham, UK:    The whole of computing is based on modularity (the passive backplane). Products today are collections of subsystems, so in a sense are modular already.
01:13:52    Marc L:    It looks like Apple’s DIY fix costs as much as it would to have them do the repair!
01:16:12    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    thank you Chelsea &
01:16:19    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    Amber
01:16:36    Mike Tyran:    Awesome tour. Thank you!
01:17:57    Daniel Smith Los Alamitos CA USA:    Does iFixit have repair guides for vintage computers? Should I just browse the website to see what is there?
01:17:58    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    peter there seems to be an issue with your mike.
01:18:46    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    now I think you are having a WiFi issue
01:19:31    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    possibly the signal is weak outside the building?
01:19:32    Mike Tyran:    yes
01:21:19    Mike Tyran:    The Grundig is awesome. Keepo it alive
01:21:29    Tamar-RepairCafeTivon-Israel:    It's getting late for me - way past my bedtime, so I'll be signing off. Peter and iFixit staff - thank you for the brilliant tour! Nice to see everyone! Good night :)
01:21:36    Mike Tyran:    The Grundig will
01:21:42    Chris Setz, Tottenham, UK:    I found this iPhone 14 teardown worth watching - in what seems a significant departure to me, some parts of the phone seem much quicker and easier to repair than any previous set of recent Apple products https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQErjW5uR0k
01:22:27    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    back in the 20th century, the tubes were always the first suspects.
01:22:41    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    Bye Tamar, C U next time
01:24:27    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    those are NOT the original wheels on that mail truck
01:28:00    Howard - Mpls/StPaul - MN - USA:    Interesting developments in the US for appliance repair information...  Link to proposed rule making here. https://www.ifixit.com/News/67120/all-major-appliances-may-soon-ship-with-repair-instructions-thanks-to-a-new-ftc-rule?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email
01:29:28    Mike Tyran:    No worries. this is/has been verify informative and a lot of fun
01:30:10    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    I agree, you've really made the best you could of a challenging situation
01:30:34    Alvin:    Yep! Super cool to see a dedicated repair space like this considering we don't have something like this near me, far west of the GTA
01:31:30    Mike Tyran:    Thank you Wayne
01:32:16    Marc L:    Buy a new wheel rather than repair?!?!?! And admitting it on a Fixit Clinic session?? OMG!
01:33:23    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    i think howard is right
01:35:59    Howdy Goudey:    under audio settings in zoom there four levels of "suppress background noise" auto, low, medium, high (try low?)
01:36:40    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    eventually i am gonna get a peripheral webcam to use for these Virtual Clinics. never bought one before, is Logitech a good choice, anyone?
01:37:32    Mike Tyran San Antonio TX:    yes
01:37:50    Chris Setz, Tottenham, UK:    This OSS will allow multiple cameras (both phone and web cameras inc mics) you can mix between https://obsproject.com/
01:38:33    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    your Fixit coach needs a headlamp for the toaster oven repair
01:39:15    Chris Setz, Tottenham, UK:    Don't ifixit sell a wowstick (battery-operated screwdriver) this person could use?
01:40:14    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    cordless screwdriver!! what an innovation. we should start marketing those in the US
01:41:26    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    the last time i had a toaster oven open, i added a layer of welders' blanket inside the wrapper, for additional insulation.
01:41:34    Wayne Seltzer Boulder U-Fix-It Clinic Colorado USA:    So, what's wrong with the toaster oven?
01:41:48    Philip Le Riche (UK - The Restart Project):    There's ALWAYS one more screw!
01:42:20    Wayne Seltzer Boulder U-Fix-It Clinic Colorado USA:    Looking forward to hearing about the resistance test of the heating elements.
01:42:37    Mike Tyran San Antonio TX:    Peter the audio is actually good
01:42:48    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    music? there was music? hmmmm.
01:42:58    Marc L:    LOL, sometimes 2 more screws! I have learned to appreciate how strong one screw can be!
01:43:25    Mike Tyran San Antonio TX:    Continuity on the heasting coil?
01:43:56    Simon Langlois - Jersey, Channel Islands:    Thermal cut-out? - we get a lot of those faulty in appliances.
01:44:19    Mike Tyran San Antonio TX:    👍
01:44:20    Philip Le Riche (UK - The Restart Project):    Is this a toaster? Where does the toast go?
01:44:20    Howard - Mpls/StPaul - MN - USA:    Yes we do.
01:44:29    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    agreed, wayne i am still not sure what the symptoms are but if it's 'just not heating', we need to know if ALL elements are not heating, and continuity checks on all that aren't
01:44:37    Mike Tyran San Antonio TX:    Toaster oven not a pop-up :-)
01:45:10    Chris Setz, Tottenham, UK:    A toast to the person who saves the toaster from becoming toast
01:45:11    Philip Le Riche (UK - The Restart Project):    Still don't see where the toast goes!
01:45:28    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    Philip, this is a tiny oven with a swing-down front door
01:45:47    Mike Tyran San Antonio TX:    There should be door in the front of this. You " load it on there. More that just toast
01:45:49    Philip Le Riche (UK - The Restart Project):    My toaster was a wedding present in 1979 - still making the daily toast!
01:46:29    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    you just haven't seen the front yet. the tiny bulge in the back signifies an attempt to accommodate larger frozen pizzas
01:48:13    Chris Setz, Tottenham, UK:    Many hands make light work
01:48:58    Marc L:    Don’t these ovens fail the same way fairly often? Presumably someone has searched for this already...
01:50:31    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    what was the make and model of this oven? i didn't catch it on the audio
01:51:49    Marc L:    Breville 800XL
01:51:52    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    800 xl breville
01:53:54    Mike Tyran San Antonio TX:    Got to go. Thank you all for a great Sunday afternoon. Very informative and loads of fun. I appreciate the organizers for getting this together. Thanks Wayne and Peter. See you all next time :-)

01:54:27    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    Bye Mike C U next time
01:54:51    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    ironic, there is an IFixit entry for this. see above
01:54:56    Simon Langlois - Jersey, Channel Islands:    Can you check the thermal fuse?  I keep some in my tool kit as they're also a common failure point.
01:55:40    Alvin:    Got an instruction manual, trying to find a service manual...
Breville BVO800XL

01:56:59    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    Ifixit said there was  loose spade connector on the board
01:57:47    Philip Le Riche (UK - The Restart Project):    Need to go now. Someone say Hi to Liz Chamberlain - saw her in the courtyard (with the blue hair) - met her at Fixfest in Brussels the other week. Kool kid. C-ya!
01:57:59    Marc L:    In the immortal words of a high level EE I know, “Most electrical problems are mechanical problems.”
02:00:17    Marc L:    My internet connection is terrible. Sorry for bad audio. I’m trying to scold these guys for not looking at iFixit before they started the disassembly!
02:00:41    Alvin:    Going to drop for now, thanks for the opportunity Peter! :)
02:01:10    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    yah, we figured that one out.   hey marc, have you considered hiring Sonic as your ISP?
02:01:31    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    ALVIN - good to hear from you, see you next time
02:01:31    Chris Setz, Tottenham, UK:    Repair is a journey where even the tributaries are worth exploring at least once
02:02:19    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    in some  cases, as we here in the Colonies are fond of saying, sometimes that just means you are 'up a creek'.
02:02:40    Chris Setz, Tottenham, UK:    With too many paddles
02:03:33    chris in berkeley, ca, usa:    okay, peter, what are we lookin' at here?
02:03:36    Marc L:    I called Sonic, there sales guy couldn’t answer even basic questions, but was good at interrupting me. Their site is not so good either. I have gotten conflicting answers about whether or not fiber is available in my neighborhood. They are piggybacking on ATT for now, until their own (likely costlier) network gets built out.
02:08:16    Brigitte | Repair Cafe New Zealand:    Wonderful meeting! Thanks so much for the awesome grand tour of the IFixit offices and the in-person repair stations. See you next time :)
