Participants-571 2021-05-28 Zoom Fixit Clinic University of Limerick IRL

RETURNING:
Nancy from CAN-ON-Brampton: Nancy (Electric Steam Mop and mug from last Zoom Fixit Clinic) is bringing two new items: (Item 1) Programmable thermostat Honeywell Cant see 2011 or earlier Digital light does not turn on I am worried I might break something
(Item 2) Garden hose Garden hose with a hole: is it fixable? If so, can I do it on my own (not a handywoman at all) or should I go and buy a new one? It is more than 5 years old and I don’t know the model 2014 Hole Duck tape

Alexa from CAN-ON-Montreal: Alexa (Toaster oven from 2021-02-13 Zoom Fixit Clinic Harvard University) is back with a lamp with a broken connection

NEW:
Carrie from USA-VA-Virginia Beach: three-way lamp King's Brand https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001OLLR38 2013 It started to get flickery and had to be jiggled to light up (even when the switch was on), but now when I jiggle it nothing happens at all (when the switch is on). It only stopped working completely a day ago; haven't tried anything yet.

Anne from USA-MN-Minneapolis: Vintage radio with broken base Shattered base/stand

Maria from USA-Washington-DC: Large stroller Urban Advantage 2011 or earlier Cannot open it fully so it will lock into stroller position, something blocking extension I tried pulling it harder, it gets stuck

Lilyana from TUR-Ankara: Desk lamp connection intermittent when I pivot the hinge

06:43:25 From Jessika Richter (Lund, Sweden) : Programmable thermostat Honeywell Cant see 2011 or earlier Digital light does not turn on I am worried I might break something
06:43:38 From Bas Flipsen : often you can slide of the thermostats from the wall
06:44:07 From Chris in berkeley, ca, usa : thermostat, does It have batteries?
06:44:45 From Chris in berkeley, ca, usa : hose, it's worth fixing if it is not deteriorated in multiple locations. what was the cause of the hole?
06:45:53 From Wayne Seltzer - Boulder U-Fix-It Clinic, Colorado USA : https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01ISAMUA6
AstroAI Multimeter 2000
$9.38 (with $2 coupon) Free Amazon Prime shipping.
06:45:56 From Alvin (Toronto, Canada) : RTH6350 Honeywell Thermostat:
06:46:12 From Bas Flipsen : what do you want to do with a multimeter?
06:47:46 From Chris in berkeley, ca, usa : have you tried a new bulb in the lamp socket.  intermittent failures are very difficult to diagnose
06:48:06 From Carrie Snyder (Virginia Beach, VA, USA) : I do have another bulb but it’s about as old as the other one
06:48:18 From Carrie Snyder (Virginia Beach, VA, USA) : Although it works all the time, not intermittently
06:48:30 From Mario Barros (Aalborg, Denmark) : Termostat manual: https://www.smarthomeperfected.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/TH6320R-UG.pdf
06:48:38 From Bas Flipsen : is the light broken, or the lamp armature
06:48:40 From Nancy : Thank you to everyone who sent me places where to buy inexpensive multi meters !! Much appreciated
06:48:57 From Carrie Snyder (Virginia Beach, VA, USA) : @Bas - not sure
06:49:15 From Bas Flipsen : when you replace the light, and it does not work, than probably there is something wrong with the armature
06:49:49 From Jonathan Krones (Boston, MA) : I love the font of the numbers!
06:49:55 From Chris in berkeley, ca, usa : i'm not sure even Sugru could fix this clock
06:50:02 From Bas Flipsen : Can you enter the product?
06:50:02 From Carrie Snyder (Virginia Beach, VA, USA) : @Bas - I’ll have to wait for it to re-break to see if the lightbulb replacement works… as I mentioned in my intro, it just started working again
06:50:38 From Dany (Belgium) : I would probably replace the base of the radio with something else. Seems a big work to glue that
06:50:39 From Alvin (Toronto, Canada) : We can 3D print the base - looks to be a simpe triangle
06:50:50 From Jonathan Krones (Boston, MA) : Yes Alvin!
06:51:06 From Bas Flipsen : @carrie, i think something is wrong with the cabeling. If it is an old candescent lamp
06:51:08 From Bennett McCardle- Toronto Repair Cafe, Canada : Lots of parts for this triangular Zenith radio for sale on Ebay right now called a "Golden Triangle" model.
06:51:36 From Angel Leuven : Another manual, would like to see the thermostat again to confirm which one of the proposed one it is: https://manuals.plus/nl/view/?file=/wp-content/sideloads/honeywell-rth7600-touchscreen-programmable-thermostat-manual-optimized.pdf
06:51:41 From Carrie Snyder (Virginia Beach, VA, USA) : @Bas, it’s from 2013.  Sure, I’d be happy to replace the cabling if that’s the issue.  I don’t have any spare cabling to try out today, though.
06:51:43 From Bennett McCardle- Toronto Repair Cafe, Canada : Called the Royal 950 Golden Triangle radio.
06:51:57 From Mario Barros (Aalborg, Denmark) : https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/zenith_royal_950_golden_triangl.html
06:51:58 From Alvin (Toronto, Canada) : I shared the Thermostat manual earlier above;
RTH6350 Honeywell Thermostat:
06:52:02 From Bas Flipsen : must be the connectors. Cables dont break that often
06:52:11 From Chris in berkeley, ca, usa : electric analog clock movements are problematic. eventually they wear out mechanically and getting parts is impossible. let alone replacing them...
06:52:29 From Wayne Seltzer - Boulder U-Fix-It Clinic, Colorado USA : https://www.freecycle.org - you might have one in your location. Easy to place a "Wanted" ad for a multimeter.
06:53:15 From Carrie Snyder (Virginia Beach, VA, USA) : @Bas - and it’s not like I move around the lamp at all… it just sits on the table, and the cable is protected from being stepped on, etc.
06:53:51 From Bas Flipsen : @carrie, i have a same issue with one of my armatures, but unfortuanley i cannot get into it!
06:54:07 From Anne L Waltz : There are two vintage clock repair shops here in Minneapolis.
06:54:10 From Bas Flipsen : that is a nice stroll somewhere in the US
06:54:18 From Chris in berkeley, ca, usa : so Maria has "American Robins" in her back yard. I hear.
06:55:36 From Alvin (Toronto, Canada) : @Lilyana, probably a broken wire at the base of the moving lamp fixture
06:55:39 From Bennett McCardle- Toronto Repair Cafe, Canada : Michael Jack on Flickr gives these specs for the radio:
06:56:01 From Bennett McCardle- Toronto Repair Cafe, Canada : "Zenith 950 "Golden Triangle"
Here's another view of the Zenith "Golden Triangle".

The left panel is the speaker and the right side is the radio tuner and volume.

This is a pretty heavy radio. It stands approx 10 inches tall and the metal panels are made from very thick metal plates.

This three sided radio may be the most extravagant transistor radio made by Zenith. One face is dial, one is the clock, and one is the speaker. The clock has a 7-jewel Swiss clock movement. The escutcheons are 17-karat gold plated. The radio chassis is the same as the the one inside the Royal 500E.

The "Golden Triangle" sold for $150.00 which was a whopping sum back in 1959-60."
06:56:14 From Bas Flipsen : please dont forget to unplug the ligth before opening it up.
06:56:41 From Dany (Belgium) : Lilyana, please prepare screwdrivers, small cutter knife
06:57:11 From lilyana yazirlioglu - Ankara, Turkey : okey Dany
06:57:17 From Chris in berkeley, ca, usa : Lilyana needs whatever hand tools are required to get the lamp open. in this case a multimeter might not hurt, either. :)
06:57:20 From Alvin (Toronto, Canada) : See if you can identify the kind of screws holding the light fixture together
06:57:43 From Alvin (Toronto, Canada) : May also need a pair of plyers so we can cut off the broken wire segment
06:58:21 From Chris in berkeley, ca, usa : @ Alvin Exactly. possibly Phillips screwdriver?
06:58:57 From Ines Junge - University of Oslo + PLATE conference : What is the stroller brand?
06:59:20 From Jonathan Krones (Boston, MA) : Urban Advantage 2011
06:59:44 From Alvin (Toronto, Canada) : Most likely Chris, all the lamps I've seen use Phillips screws
07:00:55 From Wayne Seltzer - Boulder U-Fix-It Clinic, Colorado USA : Maybe this is the Urban Advantage stroller/pram/buggy?
07:00:57 From Bas Flipsen : For safety reasons, Strollers have two locking mechanisms. Probably the other one is preventing it from opening up
07:01:09 From Tmac's iPad Pro 10 : Also looks like that pin extended on back leg should connect with something
07:02:17 From Wayne Seltzer - Boulder U-Fix-It Clinic, Colorado USA : I think the stroller's pin/rod is actually a kickstand-- see the manual
07:02:33 From Maria in Washington, DC : Yes the stroller needs cleaned out I’ll do that now
07:03:10 From Wayne Seltzer - Boulder U-Fix-It Clinic, Colorado USA : Need to buy a new socket...
07:03:24 From Dany (Belgium) : The wire seems to be pressed.
07:03:30 From Wayne Seltzer - Boulder U-Fix-It Clinic, Colorado USA : Hardware stores have these kind of ceramic sockets. Easy.
07:04:34 From Wayne Seltzer - Boulder U-Fix-It Clinic, Colorado USA : Our favorite question.... Do you have a multimeter, Alexa?
07:04:45 From Chris in berkeley, ca, usa : a hardcore fixer would drill out the rivet & replace with a #8-32 screw & nut. but that is for advanced post-docs
07:05:56 From Bas Flipsen : does the DVD have an open slot?
07:07:04 From Dany (Belgium) : Bas, didn’t know you cleaned your ears with alcohol :-)
07:07:09 From Peter Mui Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA US : Optical Drive Troubleshooting: Repair Tips from the Fixit Clinic
07:07:20 From Dany (Belgium) : I use a q-tip
07:07:58 From Bas Flipsen : @Dany, not only that ;)
07:09:30 From Chris in berkeley, ca, usa : I don't have a breakout room button in my bottom toolbar
07:09:48 From Alvin (Toronto, Canada) : Got the button now - thanks!
07:10:12 From Chris in berkeley, ca, usa : okay thanks jonathan, got it now
07:10:15 From Alexa Bakker, Montreal, QC, Canada : Yes, I have a multimeter
07:10:16 From Carrie Snyder (Virginia Beach, VA, USA) : I see the list of rooms, but no way to join it
07:10:25 From Jessika Richter (Lund, Sweden) : if you can't see the breakout rooms or join one, we can also manually place you in one
07:10:26 From Carrie Snyder (Virginia Beach, VA, USA) : Thanks!
07:10:46 From Nancy : Sorry I can’t see the list
07:11:08 From Jessika Richter (Lund, Sweden) : click on breakout room button and the list should come up
07:45:25 From Donna Belgium/UK/Netherlands : I have to go but it's been an interesting session. Thanks!  I look forward to joining again next time
07:49:10 From Carrie Snyder (Virginia Beach, VA, USA) : This is the 4th conference
07:49:57 From Wayne Seltzer - Boulder U-Fix-It Clinic, Colorado USA : https://www.repair.org/
07:55:02 From Carrie Snyder (Virginia Beach, VA, USA) : Thanks to Des and Allan for their help with my lamp!
07:55:41 From Jessika Richter (Lund, Sweden) : there are also more virtual fixit clinics coming up and people can come back!
07:56:41 From Jessika Richter (Lund, Sweden) : https://www.facebook.com/FixitClinic/events/
07:59:58 From Bas Flipsen : what i like the most is that you can talk people through and encourage them to add some force, push or pull
08:00:25 From Alexa Bakker, Montreal, QC, Canada : I think if people brought/took photos to screen share then that would help a lot, too.
08:00:27 From Carrie Snyder (Virginia Beach, VA, USA) : @Bas - agreed; knowing what force will break a product during disassembly isn’t clear at all
08:00:54 From Carrie Snyder (Virginia Beach, VA, USA) : I would like to see webcams that could do closeups
08:01:07 From Carrie Snyder (Virginia Beach, VA, USA) : Most webcams don’t focus well really close up
08:01:26 From Dany (Belgium) : @Carrie, if the item is broken it is ok to force it a bit more. You cannot break it more than it already was.
08:01:45 From Peter Mui Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA US : To join Server -Fixer/Observer sign-in at http://bit.ly/fixitcoachsignup, select “Repair via the 𝙂𝙡𝙤𝙗𝙖𝙡 𝙁𝙞𝙭𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙎𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙚𝙧 using Discord”
08:01:45 From Carrie Snyder (Virginia Beach, VA, USA) : @Dany, agreed, as long as you’re not going to hurt yourself!
08:02:49 From Dany (Belgium) : @Carrie, if I didn’t bleed during a Repair Cafe, I didn’t try hard enough ;-)
08:02:54 From Bennett McCardle- Toronto Repair Cafe, Canada : Carrie is right - warnings are required if a proposed maneuver is potentially dangerous - like the microwave fix last session. A responsible fixer does give those warnings.
08:02:56 From Carrie Snyder (Virginia Beach, VA, USA) : @Dany, LOL
08:02:58 From Chris in berkeley, ca, usa : Frank is right
08:03:01 From Carrie Snyder (Virginia Beach, VA, USA) : Thanks, everyone - dropping to go back to the conference!  Great session
