The raw video for Virtual Fixit Clinic 553 2020-05-17 Boulder Colorado US is here:
If someone wants to time index it for each presentation that would be great: I'll edit below and the youtube page with the times.
-From Oakland California, US: Toaster Black & Decker does not stay engaged for heater to stay on
-From Berkeley California US: Sewing machine Singer #648. Touch and sew. The mechanism below the bobbin does not turn, thus, the bobbin does not turn, function. I have opened the case, tried to reach the mechanism from below but a metal bar is in my way. I opened it up from above but can see nothing I can do. It is 52 years old and repair shops say it’s too old, no parts, etc but I love it!!
-From San Mateo California US: Apple display Apple A1407 2011 It turns off every once in a while and seems to crash my computer
-From Bruxelles Belgium: Headset Logitech A-00064 Suddenly, during a call, the speaker started making noise and than stopped working. So probably it's a bad contact. The audio is still working fine. I only checked to be sure that it's not a 'software ' issue: I checked if the speaker settings on my computer were ok, if my browser / video call system had access to the microphone, tried to use it in different types of video calls (but it didn't).
-From Boulder Colorado US: Kettle Aroma AWK-108 2015 It won't work (i.e. stay turned on, boil water). I did but since it's an electrical repair I am scared to fiddle around on it as I have no hands on experience with expert-ish guidance.
The Zoom chat is below.
00:24:31 Machine Whisper cc: Does the touch and sew wind the bobbin in place? Take needle plate off so we can see the inside of bobbin
00:25:56 Ezra Kone: I have a Lenovo thinkpad that's plugged in, thinks it
00:25:59 Ezra Kone: s
00:26:04 Ezra Kone: 'ts charging, but isn't
00:26:10 Jill Churchman: should I take the bobbin case out?
00:26:32 Ezra Kone: Anyone know how to get one of these things to actually charge?
00:29:30 Peter Mui Mac Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA: Toaster Hamilton Beach - Type T95 toaster Model: 22614R Series:A4181DL 2019 It does not hold down to toast. It does the work of toasting the except that you have to hold down the lever to do the work. Sergio
00:33:05 Peter Mui Mac Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA: Enid toaster Black & Decker does not stay engaged for heater to stay on no
00:33:27 Steve Berl-Piedmont, CA: +1 for the crumbs in the contacts
00:35:56 Dave West [REPAIR CAFE Schenectady NY]: DAVE WEST for the toaster oven
00:36:34 Peter Mui Mac Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA: Jill Singer #648. Touch and see. 2009 or earlier The mechanism below the bobbin does not turn, thus, the bobbin does not turn, function. 00:40:34 Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium: hi what different breakout rooms are there?
00:41:01 Peter Mui Mac Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA: Shova: Apple A1407 2011 It turns off ever once in a while and seems to crash my computer
00:41:12 Angel Leuven (Belgium): toasters and sewing machine, Tomas
00:41:27 Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium: and Benoits waffle iron?
00:41:39 Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium: :-)
00:41:42 Angel Leuven (Belgium): not yet here
00:41:51 Ray Pfau - Bolton, MA, USA: Right now we have one breakout room with toasters, one with toaster oven, and one with sewing machines.
00:42:21 Ray Pfau - Bolton, MA, USA: We have not seen Benoit's waffle iron yet.
00:42:36 Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium: is the sewing machine breakout with CC?
00:44:06 Steve Berl-Piedmont, CA: +1 vote for checking firmware on monitor
00:44:14 greene_land: is it possible to hook up a different monitor and see if the behavior changes
00:46:02 Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium: could you put me in the toasters breakout and get me back in when Benoit's waffle iron arrives? :-)
00:46:27 Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium: I'm just too curious to the final of this Fixit series :-)
00:46:56 greene_land: i have a CRT monitor running off my laptop that has some software glitch and periodically goes monochrome, i have to sleep and reawaken to straighten it out. tried re installing driver but no help, still doing it but not often enuf to cause a real problem
00:47:12 Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium: leave me here for the time - Belgian! :-D
00:47:35 Ezra Kone (he/him): alarm is going off in my building. I need to leave
00:48:36 Pat, Boulder, CO, USA: Why is there an echo?
00:48:52 greene_land: someone is not muted
00:49:32 Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium: can the people without headsets mute their mic when they are not speaking please?
00:49:42 Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium: it would avoid all this echo / feedback
00:49:45 Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium: TIA
00:50:04 Peter Mui Mac Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA: Rosalie: Logitech A-00064 Suddenly, during a call, the speaker started making noise and than stopped working. So probably it's a bad contact. The audio is still working fine. I only checked to be sure that it's not a 'software ' issue: I checked if the speaker settings on my computer were ok, if my browser / video call system had access to the microphone, tried to use it in different types of videocalls (but it didn't).
00:50:36 Rosalie (Ghent, Belgium): Logitech A-00064
00:54:18 greene_land: i mention the CRT only as an example of display misbehavior. unsolved and i have no wish to pursue it.
00:54:22 Peter Mui Mac Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA: Eider: Aroma AWK-108 2015 It won't work (i.e. stay turned on, boil water). I did but since it's an electrical repair I am scared to fiddle around on it as I have no hands on experience with expert-ish guidance.
00:54:47 Pat, Boulder, CO, USA: It's an electric kettle?
00:58:22 greene_land: if peter is right will need to obtain correct tool . purchase in better hardware stores
01:00:25 Howard MSP: With care, a smaller slotted screwdriver (that you do not care about) can sometimes work on a tri-wing. Not my first choice...
01:05:33 greene_land: regarding tri-wings and similar, once removed i just cut a slot across the head so i can use flat blade screwdriver next time. i use Dremel with thin cutoff disc to cut slot
01:06:49 Peter Mui Mac Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA: Cuisinart TOB-30BC 2018 When I press the start button nothing happens, light doesn’t come on to indicate power No but I will now
01:07:20 Machine Whisper cc: So the singer may need parts that I have…and she is in Berkeley.
01:07:55 Ezra Kone: I have a fire alarm system that can get triggered by something not burning its parking garage
01:12:00 Machine Whisper cc: need to step away for moment
01:12:06 greene_land: if there is no magnet, may be a mechanical problem with linkage
01:12:55 greene_land: good question peter, is there a bimetallic device that unlatches when it heats
01:16:23 Koen Leung: I think that Apple deliberately makes their products harder to repair so that you can buy new ones.
01:16:27 greene_land: can also use duct tape applied firmly to several locations with tail to grab onto with hands
01:17:54 greene_land: duct tape to take face off monitor
01:18:37 Steve Berl-Piedmont, CA: The magnets hold the glass in place and under the glass are the screws that hold the case together.
01:19:27 Steve Berl-Piedmont, CA: I don’t think it is harder to repair. It’s just so they can have a really thin bezel that looks cool. It’s actually easy to get open.
01:19:57 greene_land: i think it’s often a power supply problem with the big screen tv
01:20:20 greene_land: hahaha good point wayne heat your home with your tv
01:21:59 greene_land: okay the real question is how long will it take to account for the energy reduction by putting in the energy it takes to manufacture a whole new energy efficient LED screen tv
01:22:24 Gregg San Diego: Thanks "fixers". I've got to go and fix something. See you next time. -Gregg
01:22:50 Andrew B (Upstate NY): Also got to head out. Happy fixing everyone.
01:23:43 greene_land: so what happens if you remove the battery and leave the power supply connected, will it run normally
01:24:10 greene_land: bye andrew, bye Gregg
01:25:01 Peter Mui Mac Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA: +1 greene_land pull the battery
01:25:33 greene_land: Ez sez the battery charge is NOT increasing
01:26:41 Steve Berl-Piedmont, CA: Look for a way to reset/calibrate the battery management. Google your make and model for that.
01:27:32 greene_land: yeh you can end up with some real crappy cheap batteries if you are not careful about your supplier
01:29:58 Machine Whisper cc: Monkey Crack
01:30:31 Shova - San Mateo, CA: THNAK YOU, ALL! See you next time.
01:31:34 greene_land: bye shova, glad you could join us
01:31:48
Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium:
the repair cafe in Leuven, Belgium, solution to connect people with broken stuff with repair dudes & dudettes :
https://www.repairconnects.org/01:32:39 Steve Jones-D'Agostino (Massachusetts): Big, hearty congrats, everyone! I learned a lot for our Repair Café on June 20 in Massachusetts. Stay healthy & well!
01:33:16 greene_land: C U next time steve
01:36:52 greene_land: FIXED
01:37:35 greene_land: Kettle may be bad switch contacts
01:37:50 Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium: gotta go. C u next time!
01:38:06 greene_land: Tools are not that expensive and you may have use for them in future
01:38:40 Eider (xe, xem, xer(s) singular pronouns): I just has access to the makerspaces here that have all the tools, if i didn't i would invest in second hand tools for sure!
01:38:46 Eider (xe, xem, xer(s) singular pronouns): *have
01:38:48 greene_land: i sometimes use abrasive ink eraser to clean switch contacts
01:40:30 greene_land: i had the same experience with a dehumidifier. they promised to send me a new one, it’s not due to arrive yet
01:41:24 greene_land: i hope the new item was less fire prone than the old one
01:42:29 greene_land: sounds like a loose contact inside the unit
01:42:37 Eider (xe, xem, xer(s) singular pronouns): Are we doing another round of breakout rooms?
01:42:50 greene_land: the magnetic charging plug i mean
01:44:52 greene_land: regarding the contacts sometimes the connector gets loose from the supporting circuit board
01:46:18 greene_land: USB analyzer good idea Wayne
01:46:35 greene_land: Eider that is a good question
01:47:24 Machine Whisper cc: My new POV camera is coming on Tuesday so I will be able to do hands free recording….so all I will need is to get my headset to work
01:48:19 Machine Whisper cc: I am listening but pattern drafting at the same time so I am still here
01:49:57 greene_land: those toaster element connections often degrade because of heat and just disintegrate. you can’t solder because it gets too hot in use. crimping is the only way i know how. aluminum is not a good choice because of heat. if it is a spade lug it should be replaced
01:50:54 Ezra Kone: I'm gonna go try to see what my battery's doing and finish up an essay. Thanks for the good clinic. Good luck fixing
01:51:36 greene_land: hey glad you could join us ezra, come back again next time
01:52:05 greene_land: i am getting seasick
01:52:11 Elaina Rivais - Melrose MA USA: I have to head out, happy to meet some new faces and learn from this virtual event format. Hopefully see you all at another event soon!
01:55:03 greene_land: bye Elaina, hope to cU next time
01:56:39 greene_land: it is very difficult to make any kind of solder stick to Nichrome or Tungsten elements, they form an oxide on the surface that solder won’t adhere
01:57:52 greene_land: if you stumble on the right flux it might work. i have used Allstate Duzall on stainless and it works. don’t know about Nichrome
01:58:36 greene_land: just crimp. unless you can spot weld….
02:00:31 greene_land: i don’t think even a fancy epoxy would with stand the heat over an extended period
02:00:42 Machine Whisper cc: King of random on youtube teaches how to make a spot welder from a microwave
02:01:10 greene_land: also a connector with setscrews, if it’s all the same metal might work
02:03:12 Steve Berl-Piedmont, CA: I’m leaving. Got to track down a leaky sprinkler pipe. Happy fixing everyone. See you next time.
02:03:26 greene_land: what metal is the split bolt clamp
02:04:38 greene_land: Steve is absolutely right, BE CAREFUL
02:05:02 Natalia P: I am leaving. It was great to participate, although virtually. See everyone next time.
02:05:28 greene_land: bye steve good luck with the irrigation
02:05:55 greene_land: okay natalia, thanks for joining us
02:06:39 greene_land: +1 YES peter
02:10:59 greene_land: does the mop normally get warm. is it getting as warm as it did when it was working
02:11:23 greene_land: are there a lot of minerals in the local tap water?
02:11:57 greene_land: does it have a pump or is it just steam that drives the water out
02:12:40 greene_land: what do you have to lose by taking it apart
02:13:12 greene_land: after you have checked to see if there is a RECALL . or if it is under WARRANTY
02:13:53 greene_land: limeAway, product from your hardware store
02:14:12 greene_land: muriatic acid from the paint store
02:14:25 Howdy Goudey, El Cerrito, CA: Bye everyone.
02:15:00 greene_land: by Howdy
02:15:58 Howard MSP: Try a paperclip in the nozzle..
02:20:23 greene_land: FIXED
02:20:51 Sergio: The toaster seems to be sort of working...I think.
02:21:05 Machine Whisper cc: I am down to 30% so I am out.
02:21:26 greene_land: LET’s hear what Eider has to say about it
02:21:49 greene_land: by CC see you next time
02:22:17 greene_land: may be a bad seal in the pump
02:22:52 greene_land: brilliant idea tom
02:24:33 greene_land: SEIMI FIXED
