At 2020-08-01 Virtual Fixit Clinic 558 Lund/Malmö Sweden we saw Lindsay's Husqvarna Classica 100 Sewing Machine:

-Lindsay from Hurstpierpoint West Sussex UK: Sewing Machine Husqvarna Classica 100 I have an old Husqvarna Classica 100 electric sewing machine that my mother bought me, I think I was in my late teens/early twenties (and I am in my sixties now). I used it a bit to make baby clothes for my nephew (now 35) but haven’t used it since.  Then when coronavirus struck I thought I would get it out and try to make face masks.  But the first time I tried to use it there was a loud bang and loads of smoke.  When the smoke cleared my husband had a quick look and saw that  a capacitor was burnt out so he ordered one on line and fitted it, but the machine still does not work.  I just wondered if anyone could have a look and see if they thought it would be reparable and what it would cost to repair as I remember it as a lovely machine and it would be great not to have to do all my sewing by hand. https://youtu.be/pkVVupFkGMI?t=98

I've just watched this video on Sewing Machines maintenance and repair featuring Jennie Caminada of Cheeky Handmades of East London and this very issue came up, she suspects it's a bad capacitor in the sewing machine foot pedal switch: https://youtu.be/v7L9Vu4s_eQ?t=2540

I believe Global Fixer Ron of the Chailey Repair Café in East Sussex got the machine from Lindsay to try to fix it, I'll pass that video on to him (and Lindsay.)

Here's an update: Des emailed back that he found a bad 5A fuse: so maybe the capacitor blowing blew the fuse simultaneously?

Lindsey brought the machine to me - when I had a look, I found the suppressor capacitor nicely replaced already, but the 5A fuse in the mains plug had blown. I think that the fuse had been replaced by a faulty fuse! I put a good fuse in - all was well.

Best wishes
