Hi Global Fixers:

The raw video for Virtual Fixit Clinic 552 2020-05-09 Malmö Sweden is here: https://youtu.be/9qmReG2KJkA

If someone wants to time index it for each presentation that would be great: I'll edit below and the youtube page with the times.

We saw:
-From Bangalore India: Mosquito Bat Gecko It has stopped charging and mosquito bat doesn't work I have not tried to fix it
-From Malmö Sweden: A jacket and a sweater 1. Pogue original and 2. Red Rose League New York In the jacket there is a big hole and the zipper has lost an end (the one that connect the two parts of the zipper). The sweater also have lost the same part of the zipper. I have tried to sew the hole in the jacket, but after a while it went back to a hole.
-From Oakland, California, US: Sewing machine Viking Huskystar E10 Very difficult to turn wheel both manually and with motor, to the point where motor started smoking. Opened it up and no visible jams, lubricated gears and friction points to no avail. Friction seemed to have increased gradually. Machine was a hand me down. Not able to find similar issue online
-From Jamaica Plain (Boston) MA US: Espresso machine Italy During the quarantine I'm trying to restore a 1979 Italian espresso machine to its former glory. I was able to disassemble everything to descale and derust. However, I am totally stuck with the boiler flange. It is unbelievably strong and will not budge!
-From Boulder, Colorado US: Sewing machine My 1970's Pfaff 1212 Out of sync. Sews but not as smoothly as before I have cleaned the parts available to non-technicians. I have changed the needle. I have tried using better thread.
AND: -From Paris, France: The return of Benoît’s Tefal type 1006 series 2 waffle iron When plugged in, it produces a short circuit.

The Zoom chat is below.

Thanks again to everybody who participated!

See you at an upcoming virtual Fixit Clinic, -Peter

20:08:42 From  Roger Moss : Hello everyone
20:09:47 From  Peter PC Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA : Check the voltage on the batteries?
20:10:01 From  Don Fick, RC North Carolina : There’s some serious voltage in that racket. Maybe 20,000 volts?
20:10:34 From  Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium : shouldn't she be very careful as the voltage on the wire part to electrocute the mosquitos is quite high?
20:10:36 From  Roger Moss : ask her to identify the battery
20:10:37 From  Angel (Leuven, Belgium) : you have to measure in the pins of those two batteries
20:11:03 From  Gregg Ferry (San Diego) : Measure the voltage across the black and white wires
20:11:24 From  Gregg Ferry (San Diego) : Set for 20V DC
20:12:34 From  Gregg Ferry (San Diego) : most DMVs have over voltage protection
20:12:44 From  chris in berkeley CA : mosquito bat-  almost anything could b rong. batts are the first suspect. chec voltage on each cell indiv. 3.7 is std for Li-ion cell. however sometimes the logic  circuits go batty.
20:13:08 From  Leonard Liu, Oakland California : +1 bad charge on battery
20:13:29 From  chris in berkeley CA : also if the batts are supposed to get charged from power supply has power supply gone bad
20:14:43 From  Leonard Liu, Oakland California : When was the last time it was charged? If recently, do the batteries have a charge?
20:15:30 From  chris in berkeley CA : right leonard, absolutely
20:16:19 From  cc - FairyGodStalker - Machine Whisper : have her check the batteries if she is having a power issue
20:16:32 From  Koen Leung : That fly swatter seems to plug directly into the wall
20:16:56 From  Koen Leung : You must leave it plugged it into the wall to charge. When it is done, it should work.
20:17:03 From  Wayne S, Boulder U-Fix-It Clinic (USA) : Let's check the batteries.
20:17:16 From  Roger Moss : She said she hasn't charged it
20:17:44 From  Roger Moss : You may not need to check anything if she hasn't charged them
20:18:00 From  chris in berkeley CA : yes we understand, we cannot use swatter when plugged into wall. need to check charger output when plugged into wall
20:18:19 From  cc - FairyGodStalker - Machine Whisper : If she hasn’t charged it then THATS the power issue
20:18:44 From  Jessika Richter, Repair Cafe Malmö, Host : she has tried to charge it
20:18:53 From  cc - FairyGodStalker - Machine Whisper : I’ll be right back…
20:19:05 From  chris in berkeley CA : does multi meter have correct polarity of leads plugged in.  I can't see
20:19:07 From  Gregg Ferry (San Diego) : I don't think the probes are plugged into the right places
20:19:29 From  Gregg Ferry (San Diego) : The black should be plugged into "COM"
20:20:28 From  James Hauk Los Angeles CA USA : Sometimes multimeters show “1” if the reading is out of range.
20:20:55 From  chris in berkeley CA : CC is right. we need to reconfirm that batts have been charged
20:21:29 From  Don Fick, RC North Carolina : Purna should disable the virtual background
20:21:34 From  Gregg Ferry (San Diego) : the red into the VΩMA
20:22:08 From  Roger Moss : Purna said she CAN'T plug it in, right
20:22:16 From  Gregg Ferry (San Diego) : right
20:22:32 From  Roger Moss : Then this isn't going to help
20:22:46 From  Roger Moss : she needs to tell us if there is an adaptor
20:22:50 From  Marc - near San Francisco, California : It turns out that the plug is built into the unit itself, no separate charger.
20:23:02 From  James Hauk Los Angeles CA USA : Please close case if you’re going to plug in
20:23:29 From  cc - FairyGodStalker - Machine Whisper : have her put it together and charge it for a few moments and then try to read battery again
20:23:43 From  Purna, BLR (India) : thanks will go thru all the comments
20:24:39 From  Doug - Wellesley MA : connect 2 basic 1.5V batteries in series (3V) to replace the rechargable and see if the swatter works
20:24:45 From  Tom Crowell (Jackson, WY, USA) : Celine,
20:25:54 From  ray pfau : Puma, make sure the multimeter leads are in the right holes and are making a good connection. Put the dial on one of the resistance settings and touch the leads together. You should get a reading on the meter, either 0 or close to 0.
20:26:08 From  Peter Mac Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA : Celine: A jacket and a sweater 1. Pogue original and 2. Red Rose League New York In the jacket there is a big hole and the zipper has lost an end (the one that connect the two parts of the zipper). The sweater also have lost the same part of the zipper. I have tried to sew the hole in the jacket, but after a while it went back to a hole.
20:26:13 From  Tom Crowell (Jackson, WY, USA) : A rip on the seam?
20:26:38 From  Tom Crowell (Jackson, WY, USA) : Inside or outside?
20:26:45 From  michiel ,sint-joris-winge, Belgium : looks like a broken seam
20:26:52 From  Barbara, Warwick, NY : Perhaps pin the seam together and hand sew closed
20:27:13 From  Marc - near San Francisco, California : Please ask if it is a tear in the fabric, or a seam that has opened.
20:27:14 From  Kelly O, Minneapolis US, Hennepin Co Fixit : Is it an open seam or a tear?
20:28:28 From  Terri - Medford, MA : it might be the thread... might be good to use a quilting thread
20:28:38 From  chris in berkeley CA : CC I love your badge RTFM
20:30:21 From  chris in berkeley CA : AGREED cc, have 2 put in new zipper. unfortunately
20:31:04 From  Marc - near San Francisco, California : Maybe she can start the first stiche on the jacket in the body material, which looks thicker and stronger than the lining.
20:31:08 From  Purna, BLR (India) : I put the bat on charging
20:33:41 From  Doug - Wellesley MA   to   Jessika Richter(Privately) : can i share a screen
20:33:57 From  Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium : maybe give it half an hour, take it out of the wall plug, measure the batteries again
20:34:58 From  Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium : it should then read more than 1 Volt
20:35:04 From  Pat : What is the size of the separating zipper that you need? I can probably send a zipper.
20:35:05 From  chris in berkeley CA : so you have a nonseparating zipper
20:35:20 From  Marc - near San Francisco, California : Are we clear that she still has the zipper slider? (maybe there were originally 2 on that zipper.
20:36:05 From  Kelly O, Minneapolis US, Hennepin Co Fixit : Zipper sizes are very particular--width and thickness. It is easier to replace the zipper.
20:36:09 From  Purna, BLR (India) : Thanks Tomas..will check
20:37:01 From  Marc - near San Francisco, California : Yes to zipper replace. Sounds like she doesn’t have the skills to do so. I know I don’t!
20:38:18 From  Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium : Purna, it's now midnight at your place, right?
20:38:33 From  Purna, BLR (India) : Yes Tomas
20:39:33 From  Marc - near San Francisco, California : If she brings the jacket to the shop, they may be able to offer her some advice
20:39:34 From  Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium : would it suit you if in 30 mins Jessika sets up a breakout room so we could have a look at it again?
20:39:42 From  Purna, BLR (India) : we are in a thick of lockdown and people have retired to bed
20:40:10 From  Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium : so that would be too late for you, Purna?
20:40:40 From  bob walker : sewing shop might have advice on both the zipper and hole repairs
20:40:54 From  cc - FairyGodStalker - Machine Whisper : can’t hear him
20:40:58 From  Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium : I can't understand what Leonard is saying
20:40:59 From  Ulf Repair Café Malmö : Me neither
20:41:01 From  Jessika Richter   to   Purna, BLR (India)(Privately) : would you like more help in a breakout room now?
20:41:03 From  Purna, BLR (India) : am at home ..so its fine.. for repair I can awake through out the night @Tomas
20:41:05 From  Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium : a lot of feedback
20:41:21 From  Kelly O, Minneapolis US, Hennepin Co Fixit : Celine, when hand sewing an open seam, make sure the thread is knotted well. Start sewing your seam a few cm before the opening and end a few cm after. That should help the seam stay together.
20:41:25 From  chris in berkeley CA : really bad audio
20:41:37 From  Nancy Lo, Hennepin County (MN) Environment and Energy : much better, Leonard!
20:41:59 From  Peter Mac Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA : Belt is slipping?
20:42:08 From  Hannes (GER, ENG, SWE) : Oil?
20:42:10 From  Kelly O, Minneapolis US, Hennepin Co Fixit : Sounds like a belt.
20:42:24 From  Jessika Richter   to   Hannes (GER, ENG, SWE)(Privately) : nice! :)
20:42:28 From  chris in berkeley CA : no he said in pre-session that he lubed all available points.
20:42:29 From  Peter Mac Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA : Lily white sewing machine oil: right CC?
20:42:50 From  cc - FairyGodStalker - Machine Whisper : yes lilly white and i can see him in person
20:42:52 From  Dave West [Schenectady NY] : CLEAN! and get the pieces of old thread out too!
20:42:56 From  Marc - near San Francisco, California : How old is the machine? Of he has the manual, it should have a lubricating diagram
20:43:07 From  Peter Mac Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA : Oakland California, US: Sewing machine Viking Huskystar E10  Very difficult to turn wheel both manually and with motor, to the point where motor started smoking. Opened it up and no visible jams, lubricated gears and friction points to no avail. Friction seemed to have increased gradually. Machine was a hand me down. Not able to find similar issue online
20:43:40 From  Pat : Some machines do not take lubrication. Be careful what you put on your machine. You can gunk it up in a bad way.
20:43:43 From  Leonard Liu, Oakland California : Manual is very barebones, they tell to take in for service to lubricate.
20:43:54 From  Terri - Medford, MA : also make sure dust bunny’s are cleaned out
20:45:08 From  Pat : take it to a professional
20:45:27 From  Céline Allirol-Molin : Both the zipper slider and the stopper is gone on my jacket
20:45:31 From  Leonard Liu, Oakland California : Yea, 3-4 week backlog at only sewing repair store local
20:45:53 From  Leonard Liu, Oakland California : OK 10-4, Lily White oil
20:46:11 From  Purna, BLR (India) : Thanks for all the sugguestions@Tomas@Ray
20:46:32 From  chris in berkeley CA : I think leonard has shown that he has done his homework. I think it's time for him to accept CCs offer of a personal consult. I don't think dull needle wud explain smoke
20:46:33 From  bob walker : for sewing machine be sure to photograph each step and keep track of any screws you remove
20:47:39 From  Leonard Liu, Oakland California : OK, will contact CC
20:48:13 From  cc - FairyGodStalker - Machine Whisper : Those who are in the Bay Area cc the machine whisper contact info is 510-478-6900
20:49:08 From  Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium : That's cool, having a machine whisperer amongst us! :-)
20:49:57 From  Marc - near San Francisco, California : CC is my sewing (machine) mentor, I am pretty good af fixing them. We team up at the in person clinics. :-)
20:50:22 From  Céline Allirol-Molin : Thank you all for your advices
20:50:36 From  Peter Mac Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA : Ilan from JP: Espresso Machine La Pavoni Europiccola During the quarantine I'm trying to restore a 1979 Italian espresso machine to its former glory. I was able to disassemble everything to descale and derust. However, I am totally stuck with the boiler flange; I'm doing a complete rebuild and got stuck on the flange connected to boiler. It is unbelievably strong and will not budge!
20:50:39 From  paul : I would check to see if there is a tensioning device between the motor and the drive
20:50:55 From  Jessika Richter   to   Céline Allirol-Molin(Privately) : thanks for coming and presenting - if you have more questions, would you like to go into a breakout room in a few minutes with repairers?
20:51:10 From  Marc - near San Francisco, California : Celine, you are welcome, remember the breakout room for more attention later in this meeting
20:51:28 From  Pat : I was not able to unmute. Thank you for unmuting me.
20:51:35 From  cc - FairyGodStalker - Machine Whisper : Modern sewing machines have been recently design to keep operators out unfortunately
20:51:55 From  Leonard Liu, Oakland California : No tensioning device, unfortunately. thank you for all the suggestions! CC i will be in touch next week!
20:52:01 From  Peter Mac Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA : Is it threaded?
20:52:17 From  Marc - near San Francisco, California : Why does he want to remove the flange? Is it soldered/welded in place?
20:52:30 From  Jessika Richter   to   Pat Guilbeault Boulder, Colorado, USA(Privately) : will you be ready to go next?
20:53:02 From  Céline Allirol-Molin   to   Jessika Richter(Privately) : Yes, please
20:53:05 From  Peter Mac Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA : Oh chrome re-plating is hazard.
20:53:13 From  Peter Mac Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA : hard
20:53:29 From  chris in berkeley CA : torchv- ooh, that's kind of xtreem
20:53:32 From  cc - FairyGodStalker - Machine Whisper : Im stepping away for a quick moment if Pat comes back I can help them.
20:53:33 From  Jessika Richter   to   Céline Allirol-Molin(Privately) : great, we have one more sewing machine to look at and then I will ask some repairers to help! :)
20:53:43 From  paul : gasket material from autoshop
20:53:54 From  Marc - near San Francisco, California : Restoring the chrome fully means it will have to be stripped and re-plated. It will likely be expensive, if he can find a plater. Maybe just live with the damage and try to minimize it?
20:54:10 From  Don Fick, RC North Carolina : Automotive Form-a-Gasket is probably not food safe.
20:54:28 From  Don Fick, RC North Carolina : This isn’t really a repair project.
20:54:38 From  paul : where can you find a gasket that is food safe?
20:54:41 From  Leonard Liu, Oakland California : Look for replacement thru original manufacturer?
20:54:54 From  Marc - near San Francisco, California : canning jar gaskets won’t likely take sustained heat over time.
20:54:56 From  paul : Silicone for fish tanks?
20:55:17 From  paul : High temp silicone food safe?
20:55:42 From  paul : Yes, needs to be food safe
20:55:59 From  Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium : does the gasket come in contact with the water?
20:56:00 From  Don Fick, RC North Carolina : Food safe, food safe, food safe
20:56:35 From  chris in berkeley CA : gaskets tend to be proprietary. if an O ring can be made to fit they are available in many sizes. need the kind that tolerate HI temps. look on A__z__ unfortunately. I am using a Buna N O ring in a pressure cooker
20:56:49 From  Marc - near San Francisco, California : Here’s a link to a site that sells replacement parts https://www.espressocare.com/products/la-pavoni-home-machines
20:57:16 From  Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium : Marc +1!
20:57:30 From  chris in berkeley CA : also I have used HI=temp silicon FormAGasket from automotive suppliers in a coffee brewer
20:59:26 From  chris in berkeley CA : something in machine is stuck inside.  not reverting all the way to Straight
21:00:41 From  Joris Derwael (Haacht-Belgium ) : is the cam broken
21:00:55 From  michiel ,sint-joris-winge, Belgium : can you move the cam with you
21:01:12 From  michiel ,sint-joris-winge, Belgium : your hand
21:02:54 From  Olivier (Leuven, Belgium) : http://www.pfaff.com/SiteMedia/PFAFF/Products/Machines/Support-manuals/pfaff_1211_1212-manual-EN.pdf that's the owner's  manual, still looking for the service manual
21:04:23 From  paul : could be no engagement of the dial>
21:04:34 From  Joris Derwael (Haacht-Belgium ) : https://www.sewingpartsonline.com/cam-stack-gear-pfaff-93-040708-91.aspx
21:04:48 From  paul : I would take the dial apart
21:05:20 From  Howard : Paul.. Dial was moving rods inside machine
21:05:41 From  Hannes (GER, ENG, SWE) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtundwSHO_I
Here is a rather weird video of someone scrolling through the service manual...
21:06:03 From  Olivier (Leuven, Belgium) : nice!
21:06:15 From  paul : yes moving rods but fully engaged?
21:06:28 From  Marc - near San Francisco, California : tell her she can also turn the machine by hand for testing
21:06:31 From  Peter Mac Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA : FIXED!!
21:07:05 From  Ilan Benador : Gasket does not come in contact with water
21:07:12 From  Marc - near San Francisco, California : Keep that machine, and remind her to oil it!
21:07:27 From  Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium : Purna, are you still there?
21:07:36 From  Kelly O, Minneapolis US, Hennepin Co Fixit : A Pfaff 1221 is a fantastic machine, to keep forever.
21:08:17 From  Peter Mac Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA : The return of Benoît’s Tefal type 1006 series 2 waffle iron When plugged in, it produces a short circuit.
21:08:42 From  Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium : not a short circuit, a GROUND FAULT! ;-)
21:08:49 From  Peter Mac Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA : US Repairers: it triggers the GFCI after 30 seconds of heating up.
21:09:24 From  Wayne S, Boulder U-Fix-It Clinic (USA) : The waffle iron trips the GFCI - Ground Fault. Last time, the ohmmeter showed some resistance between the heating element terminals and the chassis.
21:09:25 From  Roger Moss : Has he measured the resistance of the element
21:09:32 From  Peter Mac Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA : In Europe the GFCI is at the house panel, not in the the GFCI outlet.
21:10:05 From  paul : Is it the temp control?
21:10:39 From  Steve Berl : @Peter These are also getting more common in US. GFCI on entire circuit installed in panel.
21:10:43 From  chris in berkeley CA : okay I have been thinking about this .  a rigorous testing setup would include a plug-in box with a means of checking current flow from hot to ground (earth).
21:11:41 From  Howard : The insulating material around the calrod is hydroscopic. Over time it conducts causing a ground fault.
21:12:19 From  Jessika Richter : In a minute we will open up breakout rooms for continued repairs:  Room 1 - Celine for a few more tips/clarifications with the jacket repair,  Room 2 -mosquito bat room to help Purna with the charging issue, main room - continued repair of waffle iron with Benoit. If you are able to help in a breakout, please say in the chat, thanks!
21:12:23 From  Leonard Liu, Oakland California : Hmm so as something expands from the heat it creates a short circuit?
21:12:56 From  chris in berkeley CA : i think howards idea is worth pursuing..  also when it heats up does the internal heating element expand and contact the outer jacket
21:13:18 From  Howard : The insulation in the other element is conducting.
21:13:37 From  Marc - near San Francisco, California : Bad connector on the end of the element?
21:13:58 From  Howdy Goudey, CA, El Cerrito : Have to make sure the elements aren't wired in series to run one at a time
21:14:13 From  Wayne S, Boulder U-Fix-It Clinic (USA) : https://www.diychatroom.com/f18/electrical-grill-tripping-gfci-inside-568466/
"It is probable that the "grill" has a ceramic insulated ("calrod") heating element.

The actual heating element (resistance wire) is inside a (grounded) metal tube and insulated from it by a powdered ceramic material.
However, if there is a failure of the sealing of the tube, atmospheric moisture can contaminate the ceramic insulation, resulting in a small leakage current to ground which will trip a GFCI.

This is most likely to occur if the device has not been used for some time.

It may be possible to plug the grill into a non-GFCI socket and operate it for a few minutes (or longer), to "dry-out" the ceramic insulation, after which it may operate on the GFCI protected circuit.
However, even if it does then operate, the fault is likely to return after a period of not being used, because atmospheric moisture will re-contaminate the insulation ! ! !

The only "solution" then would be to replace the heating element"
21:14:20 From  chris in berkeley CA : yes power up one element at a time and see which one creates a short circuit or ground fault
21:15:00 From  chris in berkeley CA : yes i discovered a dehumidifier that was recalled just last week
21:16:05 From  chris in berkeley CA : also it is a long shot but if hygroscopic insulation is causing capacitance then AC can make a virtual short. hard to diagnose
21:16:13 From  Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium : @Leonard: no, it does not create a short circuit - somehow the heat or the current makes the internal part of the heating element change its resistance and as a result the electricity from the internal part of the heating element to the outer part which touches the grounded casing and results in a ground fault triggering the GFCI
21:16:25 From  Wayne S, Boulder U-Fix-It Clinic (USA) : Do we have the make/model number?

21:16:34 From  paul : Is there a thermostatic control device between the element and the power supply?
21:16:38 From  Steve Berl : If you could find where the leak is, you could repair it with something heat resistant. Not sure how hot it gets, but silicone might work, or that stuff you use for automitive exhaust systems.
21:16:57 From  Jessika Richter : is anyone able to help Celine with a few sewing tips/clarifications in a breakout room?
21:17:10 From  Angel (Leuven, Belgium) :  Tefal type 1006 series 2 waffle iron
21:17:36 From  Angel (Leuven, Belgium) : @wayne
21:17:52 From  chris in berkeley CA : yes if it is a faulty element then WHAT are the chances you can get a new ;part
21:18:15 From  Jessika Richter : anyone who can help Celine with the sewing quetions in breakout room??
21:19:06 From  Dave West [Schenectady NY] : High Limit or  thermal fuse?
21:20:29 From  paul : Yes, high limit could be the problem.
21:21:02 From  Steve Berl : Wayne, don’t be a wimp! What could go wrong :-)
21:21:24 From  Peter Mac Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA : please join the Global Fixers Google Group at https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/global-fixers to participate in ongoing discussion after the Zoom.
21:21:24 From  Tomas (NL-EN-FR) Belgium : Why can't I copy-paste from this chat and only select-all?
21:21:40 From  Peter Mac Fixit Clinic Berkeley CA : Benoît’s Tefal type 1006 series 2 waffle iron
21:21:47 From  paul : Thermal control can operate one or both elements with a switch.  Try replacing the thermal control device.
21:21:54 From  Benoit, Roscoff, France : Peter has it right :)
21:22:09 From  michiel ,sint-joris-winge, Belgium : @Tomas; same problem
21:22:12 From  paul : Check GFCI to see if it is okay?

regarding Benoit's wafflemaker, steve had an interesting suggestion about a supplier of Calrod elements, Wattco.
the page steve suggested has a cutaway diagram of a typical element that might help some novice fixers visualize what's going on.

the element in Benoit's appliance appears to be embedded in a larger,. proprietary part so i am not sure how realistic it is to hope for a practical replacement part, *if* that's what is needed.
