When Naga Raja turns back into a Cobra, he is shot dead by Salim, who thought the Cobra was going to attack Naga Rani. Naga Rani sees in Naga Raja's eyes the images of the killers, and decides to take revenge on the group of friends she holds responsible for her lover's death. Naga Rani systematically kills Salim, Ravi, Jai, Sri and Vijay. She attempts to kill Kamal too but fails, and is mortally wounded in another attempt. Near death, Naga Rani realises that she was wrong and that her revenge destroyed many lives just like her own life was destroyed. She sees Naga Raja in the sky calling out to her, and reunites with him in the afterlife.

Sripriya saw the Hindi film Nagin (1976) with her mother and liked one of the film's songs, wishing for a potential film featuring her and a song set to the same tune. A week later, her mother bought the rights to remake Nagin in Tamil; the remake was titled Neeya?. Durai was approached to direct; though busy, he ultimately agreed. The male lead role was first offered to Rajinikanth, who could not accept due to scheduling conflicts; the role later went to Kamal Haasan.[5]

Neeya? was released on 13 January 1979,[1] the week of Pongal.[5] On 28 January 1979 Ananda Vikatan rated the film 50 out of 100, appreciating it for putting together an ensemble cast and for showing the snake in a limited manner, yet creating the right impact.[8] The film was a commercial success, running for over 100 days in theatres.[1]

Neeya? attained cult status in Tamil cinema,[9] and became a landmark for being a rare multistarrer in the same industry.[8] It was followed by two spiritual successors: Naane Varuven (1992)[10] and Neeya 2 (2019).[11]

If you chuckled at the incredulity of this exchange, let us tell you that this takes place in a 1979 Tamil movie that has spurned a whole series of television dramas, films and other pop culture extensions.

The revenge of the lover is not a new idea. The story gets more powerful especially if it is a woman going after blood. Neeya? manages to tell it all with a good dose of fantasy, glamour and lots of cliches that were probably novel in the '70s.

The film in Tamil was actually remade from the Hindi original Nagin that released in 1976. Later in 1977, Devathalara Deevinchandi, its Telugu version, was made. Naagini TV soaps today still continue to entertain scores of Indians who either believe in the existence of the Ichadhari or find them perfectly engaging.

It is also said that the film borrows its story from Franois Truffaut's film The Bride Wore Black, based on Cornell Woolrich's novel of the same name. The 1968 French film was a revenge drama in which a widowed woman hunts and kills the five men who killed her husband on her wedding day.

Four decades later, debut director L Suresh is reviving the memory of this cult classic with Neeya 2 starring Jai, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Raai Laxmi and Catherine Tresa. It remains to be seen if the film is worth our times.

After two days of reasonable peace, it's back to hours of anxiety over depleting food and drinking water supplies. Another necessity in short supply are methods to keep the mind entertained and in control.

The cleaning has been done (even the vacuum cleaner has been vacuumed), dishes washed, clothes folded, garbage sorted and cleared and the windows wiped. In terms of entertainment, matters are stuck in a purgatory-like situation where one is between shows and without a single movie worth being excited about. As a result of this nothingness, the mind wanders to dangerous places that are just a few steps away from some form of masochism.

It is here that I found my fingers uncontrollably gravitate towards Neeya 2 on SunNXT. Watching the film once was torture enough. Watching it a second time is as much fun as plucking every single hair in your body, one at a time. But strangely, there's some pleasure to be had in this pain. So-bad-it's good is an understatement when referring to this film. Neeya 2, starring Raai Laxmi, Jai, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Kajal Aggarwal and Catherine Tresa, is what you can slot under the so-awful-you're-glad-the-world-is-ending category.

In a sense, it's a very appropriate film to be watched these days. Because, when we look back at life before Covid-19, we tend to paint the world as a rosy place, made up of beaches and mountains. But Neeya 2 is an important reminder, especially for film critics, that the world isn't going to turn into a paradise the moment things go back to normal.

So what really is the deal with this timeless love story that begins with a stalker (the heroine, this time) forcing her 'stalkee' to marry her? He's not much better either, because he isn't looking for the love of his life. He's just looking for any girl whose horoscope matches a particular kind of 'dosham'. What if we were to throw in a shape-shifting seductress who becomes a serpent by night? And what if this woman mistakes our hero to be her long-lost lover from a lifetime ago? This delicious predicament is what makes Neeya 2 the cringe classic it will soon become.

A threesome with a python is followed by a vow of celibacy. Two massive flashbacks, three sleazy songs and some silly graphics later, you realise that Neeya 2 is the antidote to any form of pain you're going to be enduring. For that alone, it deserves a place in cinema hissstory.

Sadly, the release date of one movie from the lot has been pushed further away and the reason is also here. Neeya 2 is an upcoming Tamil fantasy film directed by Suresh and produced by Jumbo Movies. Starring Jai, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Raai Laxmi, Catherine Tresa, Neeya 2 is a movie about snakes that take human form for revenge.

Varalakshmi Sarathkumar will headline a new film titled Neeya 2. The director tells Silverscreen that the film is not a retelling of yesteryear hit Neeya?. Instead, it uses elements from the original film to produce a fresh new story. Jai, Raai Laxmi and Catherine Tresa have signed on to play lead roles in the movie.

Bala Saravanan, Powerstar Srinivasan and a host of other actors are part of the supporting cast. Sridhar Arunachalam-produced film has Shabir's music, Rajavel Mohan's cinematography and Gopi Krishna's editing.

It is a spiritual sequel to Kamal Haasan and Sripriya's 1979 film of the same name. Neeya 2 is a revenge thriller in which Jai plays the role named Sharva and the husband of Divya (Catherine Tresa) in her past life. It is about the intense love and obsession that revolves around the world of mythical snakes.

The Tamil movie has managed to generate quite a buzz with its trailer and promotional materials. With the movie being billed as a prequel to yesteryear hit film, people are curiously looking forward to see whether Neeya 2 has the right content peppered with necessary commercial ingredients.
