This freedom from limitations is something I really appreciate in your work. Most writers distinguish between genres, moods, and tones, but you put it all together and push it out there.
S! For 30 years, I went to a coffee house near me. For free, without payment, I read the tarot. On Wednesdays, I read the tarot to any person. I wrote a book, The Way of Tarot, and with this I can help people. Not by seeing the future, but by solving a lot of problems people have. Psychoanalysis is a problem because it comes from scientific people, from doctors. But the unconscious is not scientific. The unconscious is crazy. But art can understand that, and then we can heal psychological problems.
I think more people should know about your comics. You have done so many wonderful collaborations with fantastic artists, but in interviews people just talk about your movies again and again. Of course the movies are very interesting, but the comics represent 30 or 35 years of really unique work.
All my life I have felt like a mutant, always fighting to impose my work. Because a normal person would think: What does the public like? Romance? Then I will make romantic stories. They want fighting? I will make something with fights. They want Superman? I will make Superman. But myself, I did what I wanted and created my public. All my life I was creating a public. I think it is good to do that, because if not you will always repeat what people already know.
LARB publishes daily without a paywall as part of our mission to make rigorous, incisive, and engaging writing on every aspect of literature, culture, and the arts freely accessible to the public. Help us continue this work with your tax-deductible donation today!

Mystic, healer, teacher, and cult film maker Alejandro Jodorowsky explains the 22 Major Arcana cards in this English subtitled video which was originally featured as an extra on The Holy Mountain DVD.
In this 6 part documentary, Jodorowsky takes us on a journey with his personal experience with the tarot, it's uses and how we may incorporate their energies into our daily lives for healing and consciousness. Unfortunately, only the first part of this documentary has been uploaded in English to Youtube, however for those who are interested in watching the full documentary en Espaol you can do so HERE.
In this next video, Alejandro goes on the record to explain "Psychomagic" a therapeutic system developed by Jodorowsky that incorporates Tarot, Eastern philosophy, art and psychotherapy to heal emotional problems, the rest of this video is on youtbe, a long with many more. All of these concepts may seem quite "radical" however, I recommend anyone that watches these videos to read his work for yourself. My personal favorites: Psychomagic , The Way of Tarot: The Spiritual Teacher in the Cards and The Spiritual Journey of Alejandro Jodorowsky
Alejandro Jodorowsky is a playwright, filmmaker, composer, mime, psychotherapist, and author of many books on spirituality and tarot, and over thirty comic books and graphic novels. He has directed several films, including The Rainbow Thief and the cult classics El Topo and The Holy Mountain. He lives in France. In 2019, Alejandro Jodorowsky was cited as one of the "100 Most Spiritually Influential Living People in the World" according to Watkins Mind Body Spirit magazine.
"A profound work that is both penetrating and fascinating. It offers thought-provoking commentary on the cards from a pair of authors who are among the world's most deeply knowledgeable authorities on the tarot."
"The Way of Tarot is a very impressive work. Whether you agree with the authors conclusions or not, it will make you think outside of the box, and will perhaps be the impetus needed for someone out there in the Tarot world to connect the dots between their thoughts and present them for examination. . . . This is a worthwhile addition to the Tarot library of anyone that wishes to move beyond the divination aspects of the cards into self-realization."
"An excellent all-around guide to both the nuts-and-bolts practical and the spiritual sides of Tarot, The Way of Tarot is filled with invaluable insights for Tarot practitioners of all skill and experience levels."
"The beginning of this book reads like a sophisticated treasure-hunt adventure. It also happens to include a history of tarot cards, which will be invaluable to people who are studying tarot seriously. . . . a reference they can go back to over and over again as they gain experience with the cards."
"The purpose of this book is to show the reader how the tarot can be seen and used in a practical way that is holistic, balanced, and grounded. . . . The Way of Tarot can be a guide along this path."
Jodorowsky is many things, but is probably best known as a movie director, with titles such as The Holy Mountain, Dune, The Dance of Reality, .. All his movies bear a strong stamp of his occult interest, and explore humanity's spirit and symbols.
Tarot cards have been used for centuries to read the symbols and understand the behavior of people through archetypes. I myself have been working with the cards for over ten years now, and they've been both a friend and a foe. As with many other things, it depends whether you use something or you abuse it.
Jodorowsky's teachings have helped me a lot in finding the right path (for me), to read the cards, and here I'd like to share with you a great video he made explaining tarot cards and such, and each of Major Arcana symbols. It's very informative and interesting, especially if you have any interest in underlying symbolic world of human language.
Hi, Mary. I seem to have missed something. How do you get four extra cards by adding the numbers of the first three? That would seem to me to produce one extra card, not four. Sorry to be a bit dense about this.
Wow! Love LOVE this spread. Thank you so much for sharing, Mary. I tried it and blogged about it here: -only-spread-by-jodorowsky-thank.html This is one I will return to many times both for self-development and to help clients gain clarity.
What a really interesting spread! My question is though to how many times do you reduce the numbers? I drew THE HANGED MAN (12), THE LOVERS (6) & THE WHEEL (10 as central cards. When I am adding A+C up I got 28 which reduces down to 10 which I allready got a C. But I solved it by reducing it once more to THE MAGICIAN instead. Whats your thoughts on this?
Just as I changed the layout of the cards from how Jodorowsky did it, I think you should feel free to adapt this process to one that works for you. However, I suggest that once you find a system that works, to be consistent.
Dear Mary: I have a question on this method.
What happen when the sum of two of the appointed cards is the number of a card that is already placed into the spread?
What do you use instead of it?
In my youth, I was a reader of several of his books, watched most of his movies, even one of his theater plays. I can tell you that he is very creative, specially in the adaptation of other people ideas.
His card descriptions are open minded fictions, ranging from freudian psychoanalysis to tibetan budhism, Gurdjieff, Kabbalah or Marcel Marceau, you name it. Sometimes a number relates to a specific idea, other to one in a very far doctrine. The same happens with the colors for each card.
[She had many other special techniques, one of which I note here for your interest only: In three-card spreads, Grandma Germaine would deal a card and then replace it in the deck, shuffle, and deal again. In this way, the same card could reappear. I have adopted the technique and when it occurs, as rare as it is, it always makes perfect sense in the context of the question.]
I bought Alejandro Jodorowsky's tarot book, which concentrates on TdM, hoping for more insight into reading my Ancient Italian Tarot. It's not TdM but it does have unillustrated minors (pips). I was not much helped. Although the book has extensive chapters on the courts and numbered cards, the vast majority of example readings in the book were trumps-only. Which seemed to confirm what I've read about TdM readers in the past - in practice, the majority of them read trumps only.
So this is my proposal, which I'm framing as a modest and therefore at least somewhat satirical one. If you want to begin reading TdM or other historical decks, throw away everything that isn't a trump, or a court card, or maybe an ace. That's 42 cards which is plenty to start reading with. Professional authors of TdM books don't read using numbered cards, so why should you? Including courts and aces makes for a more well-rounded reading without overstretching your memorization needs.
