This is the second Campaign in 8-Bit Armies, in this campaign the player will play as the newly released Guardians faction. They will battle against both Renegade and Guardian armies in this campaign.
Commander, you're awake. After we found you near death in the swamp we feared saving you was hopeless. Your old "friends" feared your power and betrayed you - we saved you. Now perhaps you can save us. Once we stood for peace and unity; now we are fractured, forced to hide in this swamp. One such betrayer is nearby. Destroy him and we can begin our campaign of righteousness.
Those Scorch Tanks you found in the swamp were prototypes we developed before we Guardians were betrayed, much like you. We have found a research and manufacturing facility that attempting to mass produce them. Destroy their Tech Labs and get us those tanks.
Remember your friends who used you to win their war and then left you for dead in a swamp? We found one of their bases. It's an Armored Car manufacturing facility. We can use the base model to come up with something better, and at the same time you get a taste of revenge. Win-win, I say.
We are making some headway to rebuilding, but we are short on munitions. Our techs have come up with a way to salvage old tanks to build turrets, but we need parts. The Renegades have a depot that I think will supply us quite well, Grab as many supply crates as you can. If you can disrupt their supply lines at the same time, so much the better.
It seems the cat is out of the bag Commander. The Renegades know you are alive, and know you are helping us. They've sent you old friend Murphy to bring you in...or kill you. It's too early for us to bring them to justice, so you will need to hold out until reinforcements arrive. Soon we will teach them that betrayal and invasion will not be tolerated.
Your presence is feared by the enemy. Soon their evil shall be exposed and justice will prevail. Now, however, we need to remain hidden and bring justice from the shadows. We currently lack the means to combat the Renegade's superior air force. We are sending a small team to a Renegade base to recover drone technology that they stole from us. Keep them safe Commander - you won't have any production resources to back you up if you lose them.
It is uncanny how your mere presence brings opportunity. No sooner did you liberate our drone tech than we find an enemy air base. Better still, the Renegades are holding some of the engineers that were captured when we were betrayed from within. Search the enemy barracks until you find our engineers and then destroy the structures. Oh, and give those drones a test run, would you?
Part two of our grand reunification begins now. Paladin Berlain was once a commander of our military intelligence branch was one of the ringleaders that destroyed the Guardians from within. He is currently overseeing a radar facility that we need to destroy. He is also holding classified tech plans for our siege Artillery, which we would like back.
We have been receiving word of new recruits. As our reunification progresses, justice and freedom become words to lie by once again. On to part three of our plan! Paladin Rodman was in charge of the Research and Development wing of the Guardians. When he betrayed us, he took with him all of our stealth tech research. We need you get the tech back and steal any parts that may already have been manufactured.
The truth is revealed: the Renegades recruited our paladins and caused our destruction. Here is your proof: the base we are sending you to assault now contains both Renegade and splinter Guardian forces working together towards the domination of our world. Use our new Spectre vehicles to disrupt their air superiority, and if you can, find out what they are working on.
Now you see what we face. But we have a plan. First, we need to send a few things into orbit. To do that, we will hijack the Renegade's nuclear silos. We will use them to launch what we need, then destroy them behind us so they can't use them to retaliate.
Excellent! We now have multiple weaponized satellite in orbit. There is one final thing we require. We have a group of hackers attempting to steal access codes from Paladin Gunderson, who was in charge of our information systems. We need him distracted. Enter his base and destroy his power systems. He will likely deploy backups, but a sufficient attack should cover what we are actually after.
And now the fun begins, Commander! We have the satellites, we have the codes. Unfortunately, they know it. Commander Smythe of the Renegades and Paladin Masters of the splinter Guardian faction are attempting to wipe us out before we can bring the satellites online. They are too late of course. Defend our position, and show them how it works.
We are in position now to absorb or remove the remaining Guardian splinter factions. Justice is ours. Show our foes that only though unity can we obtain true justice, true peace. The Guardians will prevail!
All of the splinter Guardian groups have either rejoined our ranks or have been eliminated... all except one, led by Paladin Crowley. Our techs have reported strange readings in the area, but they assure me they are not dangerous. We can't be distracted now; Crowley has warned the remaining forces of the Renegade army lead by commander Renfield. Our victory here must be absolute! Only then can begin the process of bringing true freedom and justice to the world.
8-Bit Armies is a Real-Time Strategy game from Petroglyph Games released on Steam and GOG.com on 23 April 2016 as a follow-up to their previous title Grey Goo (2015). Unlike their previous games, 8-Bit Armies is a Genre Throwback to early Real-Time Strategy games, which isn't that hard to do considering the fact that some of the developers worked on those early games. As you might have already guessed from the title, the game features a faux 8-bit aesthetic in both it's graphics (though in full 3D voxel form akin to Minecraft) and in it's soundtrack, composed by the legendary Frank Klepacki of Command & Conquer fame.
The game is rather bare bones and it shouldn't take anyone long to get used to it if you're already familiar with Real-Time Strategy games (the game does have a brief tutorial on how it plays). Basically, harvest resources (oil in this case), build up your base, build units from the limited tech tree, and overwhelm your foes with superior tactics (is Zerg Rush a superior tactic?). And drop the occasional nuke or two of course...
At the time of the game's release, it featured a single generic military faction called The Renegades, the usual singleplayer and multiplayer skirmish modes, and a 25-mission campaign where you fight against the same faction with an opposing colour. It has become quite popular in multiplayer and the campaign missions offer some replayability due to the many bonus objectives they offer to challenge players and rewards them with additional units or funds that can be useful for completing future missions and previous unaccomplished objectives. Overall, a streamlined and simplified throwback to classic Real-Time Strategy games, though the general lack of content can put you off. This was rectified somewhat with a later update that added in a new faction called The Guardians, a map editor, and a downloadable campaign mode for the new faction.
On 13 August 2016, Petroglyph Games released the first of possibly several stand-alone expansions titled 8-Bit Hordes. Whereas Armies pays tribute to the early Command & Conquer games, Hordes does the same for the early Warcraft games, shifting the modern/near-future war theme of the former to a Medieval European Fantasy theme that the developers have been teasing since day 1. It introduces two new factions, the Deathsworn and the Lightbringers, who are a not-so-subtle take on the Horde and the Alliance respectively. General gameplay is also reminiscent of it's inspiration, setting it apart from Armies. Much like Dawn of War, Hordes is cross-compatible with Armies allowing factions and maps from one game to be used in the other and vice-versa. Long story short: we can finally pit Command & Conquer against Warcraft on the same battlefield! In case you're wondering how much this expansion costs, it costs about as much as the previous game but those who own either one will get a considerable discount for the other.
A full sequel to this series of games was released for Early Access on February 23, 2024, titled 9-Bit Armies: A Bit Too Far, featuring naval combat, new units and features, and new music. At the time of release, it features only two factions, the Overlords and Sentinels, who use the arsenals of the Renegades and Guardians from 8-Bit Armies respectively in addition to new stuff for each. The Overlords campaign is, like the Renegades campaign before it, the first and only campaign on release, with a Sentinels campaign being developed for later.
Back in 1998, Westwood Studios (one of the greatest studios ever in my humble opinion) was acquired by Electronic Arts and in 2003, Westwood Studios as well as EA Pacific were closed with a plan to merge them into EA Los Angeles. As Westwood Studios was located in Las Vegas, many employees didn't want to make the move and they decided to stay put and form a new studio called Petroglyph Games.
Westwood Studios was famous for its Command & Conquer Real-Time Strategy games and this is what Petroglyph Games started focusing on right from the start with games like 2006's Star Wars: Empire at War and 2007's Universe at War: Earth Assault. Petroglyph then tried their hand at other genres in the years to follow until returning to RTSs in 2015 with the release of Grey Goo. Grey Goo ran on a newer engine called the GlyphX engine and this engine would also be used when developing 8-Bit Armies which was released only a year later in 2016.
8-Bit Armies is a streamlined Real-Time Strategy game similar to Command & Conquer but with a retro voxel aesthetic. The Complete Edition of the game (which is the one being reviewed) contains single player campaigns for two factions called the Renegades and the Guardians. These factions can also be played in multiplayer either in co-op campaigns or skirmishes versus other players.
