Next Glen Region SCCA Autocross Event #8 Sunday October 20th: Tim Meddaugh Memorial Championship Finale at Watkins Glen International Media Lot – Matt is event Chair

Who was Tim Meddaugh?  Tim was a long time Glen Region SCCA member who passed away this year.  Timmy was an SCCA member who pretty much did all aspects of the club (participating, officiating, board, etc.)  and you may have seen him flagging the Formula 1 races at Circuit of the Americas, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve-Montreal recently and at the Glen for many years.  Tim was a fun person who has been very generous with the Glen Region SCCA to allow all of us to have an easier time to enjoy motorsports.  Tim loved to hang out at the corner of the famous winner circle bar at the Seneca Lodge to bench race with the patrons with the one or two Genesee Beers and a hot dog.

We will celebrate Tim’s life after the Season Finale at the Seneca Lodge with a Genesee and have hot dogs earlier.  Let’s end the season with a fun time this weekend!

Directions to the site:

A new gorgeous Administration building honoring John Saunders, former WGI president, has been built on Bronson Hill Road that includes road race event registration, administration, police, etc.

Turn onto Bronson Hill Road from County Route 16 past the new Administration building.   Drive through the gate – it will be open 8-9 AM and then please close it, leave unlocked, if you need to leave and come back.   The Media lot is on Bronson Hill Road behind the braking zone for Turn 1/The 90 and Front Stretch Grandstand.  The paddock for autocross is next to the short Media Lot road and will be where registration is.  We will use the Media Lot road for staging the Start.

Schedule:

·         8 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.      Pre-registration check-in, registration, & Tech

·         9:30 a.m.                   Mandatory Drivers’ Meeting followed by a novice walk of the course

Nearest quicker food locations are in downtown Watkins Glen about 10 mins away: Jerlando’s Pizza and Italian food, Pudgie’s “Pizza”, Glen Mountain Market Deli, House of Hong Chinese, Lucky Star Chinese, Dunkin, Burger King, Subway, and the many other restaurants that if you call ahead can be picked up.  There’s no shortage of ice cream joints in Watkins Glen as well.  Montour Falls also has the other Jerlando’s location.

Nearest gas stations are on NY-14/414 Franklin Street: Sunoco and Sinclair (yes, the same Dino from 1960s and back!).  Sunoco Race Fuels station at WGI is open for the rare few who use race gas.

Nearest open Auto parts store is Advance Auto Parts in Watkins Glen in Tops plaza on Franklin Street.

After event at the Seneca Lodge at Watkins Glen State Park entrance

Be a part of Watkins Glen racing history to enjoy the bar and restaurant that the winners from Formula 1 to Sports cars to Indycars to NASCAR to SCCA go to Sunday night to celebrate the winner!  A great way to end the racing season and have some fun with friends and talk about how much faster you would have been with one more lap….

Fun at the Brubaker family racing shrine.

Leave Watkins Glen International – turn right onto Country Route 16 for two miles and just before NY 414, turn left onto County Route 17.  Go about 1 mile until intersection with NY 329.  Seneca Lodge is immediately to the left on the entrance to Watkins Glen State Park.

Next Glen Region SCCA Autocross Event #5 Saturday August 23rd: Pat Scopelliti Memorial Championship Finale at Watkins Glen International Media Lot – Mark/Leonard are event Chairs

Who was Pat Scopelliti?  Pat was a long time Glen Region SCCA member who passed away this year.   Pat was recently known as a Safety Steward to younger people, but Pat also ran autocross for many years in a variety of cars - Toyota Celica, Nissan 240SX, Hondas, and most recently full blown fast racing karts.  He also did track days in his Ferrari 308, which also used as the sweep car for the Grand Prix Festival

Pat was a fun person who was very welcoming to new to Glen Region SCCA autocross people to get them started in Motorsport.  Many of us are here or stuck around thanks to Pat.
