The GoPro Hero cameras are fantastic, however sometimes the fisheye effect is not all that desirable.
One can try to de-fish the image in software on your PC/MAC/iPad, but the result is often quite
disappointing, with the edges and especially the corners having that tilt-shift look.
Often we do not need such a wide field of view, depending on what the GoPro is being used for.
If you do not need that wide field of view, and want a more SLR looking image without the extreme
fisheye distortion, you can replace the lens with something more traditional.
There are times when a SLR camera is too bulky for a specific application, or the mechanical shutter
is usuitable.
For example I enjoy using the GoPro for timelapse photography of the sky when the cloud formations
are interesting, or timelapse of the sea with surfers, or rough storm seas. A mechanical shutter on
a SLR just cannot handle that many shutter releases, but the GoPro's rolling shutter can take two
images per second, indefinitely without any wear and tear, nor any deterioration of performance.
Or you want to put a camera on a monopod camera extender to shoot over a crowd, where a SLR is just
too heavy.
Or you want a lightweight, compact camera for aerial photography.
Or you want to shoot from a radio-control aircraft or multi-copter.
Ragecams has a 5.4mm lens which is proving very popular for such usage.
It produces SLR type crisp, clear, sharp images, that can be used without trying to correct for
fisheye distortion.
However it is pricey at US$309.99
Even with free shipping option, it is still going to land at well over R4000 after customs charges
and import VAT
I want to do a bulk order which should bring the price down significantly.
If we can get enough orders together, I would like to bring this down to about R2500 each.
Bear in mind, this is only for the GoPro Hero 3+ Black or Hero 4.
