“A plot against the January 25 Revolution to distort its image”. These words were used by president of the International Union of Islamic Scholars Dr. Yusef Qaradawi, to describe the attack on a Coptic church stressing that sectarianism was  a scheme against the revolution.

Qaradawi's comments were made in a statement in which he singled out those who had been in power as the plotters stressing the former regime’s ruling NDP must be behind the plot along with the thugs employed by the dissolved state security apparatus.

He believed the corrupt regime remnants were responsible for playing  the sectarian card to cause divisions whenever it wants, indicating that there is evidence of this found by the many documents obtained by the revolutionaries.

Al-Qaradawi went on to urge Egyptians to support the new government led by Essam Sharaf calling on different factions to work together in building the nation especially in this critical phase for the country

The Muslim Brotherhood’s chairman, Dr. Mohamed Badie, has offered his sincere thanks to all those who intervened to put out the fire of sectarian sedition witnessed earlier this week in Sol, South Cairo which resulted in 13 fatalities and 140 gunfire injuries.

In a statement Badie supported Many Egyptians’ beliefs that sectarian violence was being fanned by remnants of the deposed Mubarak regime to undermine the success of the People’s revolution which succeeded in toppling the dictator.

He added that the plot was a slack scheme by the few remaining Mubarak cronies and loyalists who played the sectarian card to downplay the evident unity between Muslims and Christians witnessed worldwide where religious and ideological differences were set aside and replaced with patriotism and mutual respect.

Badie expressed his appreciation to the group of Egyptian celebrities including politicians, clerics and businessmen who travelled to Sol, to lend their support to stopping the sectarian tension and called on all to ignore the hidden hand which threatened to burn  Egypt ’s unity and restrain from violence.

Badie was optimistic that things would gradually calm down and expressed his gratitude to the Military forces led by Commander Hassan al-Ruwaini, other officers and soldiers for their role in responding to this sedition.

He stressed although security instability is a natural outcome following the ousting of the former regime and its leader we all must do what we can so that this phase does not last long.

Badie ended his statement thanking the people of the village of Sol for their response to end violence and called on them to ignore any attempts to disrupt Egypt ’s peace and unity.
