I think the Great one is saying that prosperity (and perhaps excessive riches) inclines an individual to the usual human vices of lust, gluttony, alcoholism, drugs, etc; whereas adversity, which inevitably involves a degree of enforced stoicism, eschews these vices and ultimately leads to virtue.
