Being a new convert to online glasses, I recently gave three online
vendors a try in order to compare price, quality, speed of delivery,
and customer service. I ordered five pairs of glasses in varying
styles and strengths. My husband thinks I'm crazy, but when the first
order arrived, he was convinced and immediately ordered two pairs from
Zenni for himself! So far, four of the five that I ordered have
arrived. Below is my assessment. (I've spent about $230.00 in total
for five pairs of glasses, which is still less than my last pair from
Wal-Mart!)

1. Zenni Optical
Frame #4200 Purple
Single Lens with modified script for reading vision
No special tints or coatings
Ordered 11/12/07
Arrived 11/26/07
Total cost: see below
My comments: Well packaged, well made, exactly two week arrival time
even with Thanksgiving thrown in there. I love these glasses! By far,
they are the most fashionable, very light weight. I may order a second
pair in the same style for distance with a purple tint! No need to use
customer service.

2. Zenni Optical
Frame #3186 Gold
Single Lens with modified script for intermediate vision (computer
glasses)
No special tints or coatings
Ordered 11/12/07
Arrived 11/26/07
Total cost: $33.85 for the two (above and this one)
My comments: Well packaged, well made, exactly two week arrival time
even with Thanksgiving thrown in there. I use these glasses every day
at work and love them. They are light and the script is perfect for
working at my desk on the computer. If I could do it over again, I'd
order the black frames instead of the gold - just my personal
preference. No need for customer service.

3. 39DollarGlasses
Frame #3073 Coffee
Bifocal for distance / intermediate vision
No special tints or coatings
Ordered 11/22/07
Arrived 11/29/07
Total cost $83.95
My comments: Well packaged, very well made, one week delivery - wow!
While these are nice glasses, they are a bit too big for my head and
the bows are very long, plus the bifocal is cut on the left eye so
that it slants to the outside. It is very noticeable when wearing them
and they give me an instant headache. I've not contacted customer
service yet, but am going to see what I can do about exchanging them.

4. Discount-Eyeglasses
Frame #80128 Satin Coffee
Single lens for distance
Photochromic
Ordered 11/24/07
Arrived NOT YET
Total cost $54.99
My comments: The email confirmation I received said it could take up
to three weeks for delivery. I will report back once they arrive.

5. Zenni Optical
Frame #9925 Brown
Progressive lens
10% grey tint
Ordered 11/25/07
Arrived 12/7/07
Total cost: $52.95
My comments: Well packaged, well made. Distance script is perfect;
progressive seems to be working much better than I expected. Never
having progressives before, I am pleased with the script. These lens
are larger than I expected; though; the website says 32mm lens height,
but I measured and they are 33mm. With fashion dictating a shorter
lens height, sadly these may not get much use. The 10% gray tint
appears evenly applied. No need to use customer service on this 3rd
pair from Zenni!

I have liked zenni also. I find myself going back there quite often.
My only complaint now is I wish they would start adding more frames!
I about got all the ones I really really like. Althought the pictures
of the frames sometimes don't do them justice on the site, some of the
frames I thought I would love I only like and the ones I didn't know
if I would really ever wear I wear all the time and get so many
complaints on. When people ask me about my glasses I tell them about
glassyeyes and how they should check it out to order glasses online
for themselves. :)

I have a question regarding the pair you got from 39dollar eyeglasses
with the slanted bifocal line.

Does you prescription for that eye have astigmatism, i.e. a cylinder
and axis entries in your perscription?
And if so what is the axis?

The reason I ask is because in order to make single vision lenses with
astigmatism they simply rotate the lense be the specified axis. But
for bifocals I'm not sure how they do this? If your error, i.e. the
degree of slant is approx eual to the axis value in your perscription,
I suspect they screwed that up??

I don't know anything about astigmatism not how a lens must be
adjusted because of it, but I can answer your question regarding my
axis prescription. My right eye's axis is 80 and my left eye is 90.
It is the left eye that has the weird slant on the bifocal. Does
anyone have more information about this?

FYI - my husband's two new pairs of glasses arrived yesterday. He
ordered from Zenni as well. His total cost was $54.00 for two pairs
of glasses, one was a bifocal prescription and the other was a single
lens with a 80% gray tint for sunglasses. He is very pleased with both
pairs which arrived within two weeks of ordering them!

It would be nice to hear from a professional on astigmatism in
bifocals

I suspect that your weird slant, is the result of an error somehow
related to that.
Astigmatism is pretty common, so they should know how to do it right.

Also you said that they give you a headache, so I would guess that the
axis is off too.
This is much more difficult to check.

I suggest you contact them, and ask them to fix them.

Regarding you comment about fashion dictating a shorter lenses height,
I think your right. The problem is that you need 32mm minimum for
progressives to work right. If you want to experiment, you can try
monovision. One eye for distance vision, and one eye for close/
intermediate. You have to figure out which eye is dominate, and make
that one distance. Your brain is supposed to figure this out and give
you a sharp image at all distances. I've tried it, and it works ok,
they do take some getting used to.

I sent an email to 39DollarGlasses to ask for an exchange and will let
you know how their service turns out to be. Quite honestly, I'd love
to give the monovision a shot.

FYI, I am still waiting for my order from Discount-Eyeglasses to show
up. It has nearly 3 weeks and they still have not arrived.

Thought I'd post an update to my original here.

I decided to exchange the glasses I purchased from 39DollarGlasses
(number 3 in first post). Their customer service has been great! They
agreed to exchange two single lens glasses for the one pair of
bifocals! I was able to handle all of this over the phone and expect
to have the replacement glasses next week. Yeah!

The glasses from Discount-Eyeglasses (number 4 in first post) arrived
last week directly from Hong Kong in a nice, hard shell case.
Unfortunately, I did NOT notice when I ordered them that the frames
and lenses are HUGE. They appear to be for someone with a head the
size of a gorilla! Makes me wonder why their website didn't post some
type of disclaimer or refuse to complete the order when they saw that
my PD was only 61. I contacted Discount-Eyeglasses and received an
email from Kam (the owner?) who offered to exchange them for a
replacement fee of $29 plus $6 to ship! I worte back to say that I
was interested in learning more about the exchange, but now that I
think about it, I doubt I will do so for that price. It would be
easier to buy another pair from another online vendor. I think I'll
keep the HUGE pair to show people how important it is to pay attention
to the sizes when ordering!
