Sunglasses - AR tint?

Hi all,

Just had my first order come in from Zenni. I'm extremely thrilled
with the whole thing, having spent a mere $30 on some fashionable
glasses. The local Lenscrafters would have charged me literally 10x
that for something comparable. Thanks to all the people on this forum
who have been putting this info out there to save us all a lot of
money.

Anyway, I'm ready to order some prescription sunglasses now with the
winter coming up. Thinking I'd like to get 80% gray tint on a nice
plastic frame. My question for you all is, do you think AR coating is
worth getting on the sunglasses? Or would you consider it really a
matter of personal preference?

Zenni won't let you have AR coating on a tinted lens. I don't know
about the other online vendors.

I've got two pairs of prescription sunglasses from Zenni. One is 80%
gray. The lenses are very dark, good for a bright sunny day at the
beach. I also got 50% amber for cloudy days or whatever. They're so
cheap--$15 each--that you could have a different pair for every day of
the week.

This is what I read on the glassesshop.com help page:

"With sunglass lenses, an AR coating is better applied only to the
back surface of the lens (the surface nearest the eye). Because
sunglass lenses are so dark, the AR coating can wind up looking smeary
on the front surface. Coating the back side helps reduce the
reflections of light that enter from behind you and bounce off the
surface into your eyes. A back-side coated sun lens is much more
comfortable than an uncoated sunglass."

AR = "Anti-reflective" (or anti-glare as its also referred to) and its
a coating, not an actual tint.

Has anyone else had problems with rx sunglasses in general? I have
never had them before, but I recently purchased a pair each from
goggles4u and 39dollarglasses. I am unable to wear either pair as
anytime I put them on I quickly get a headache, nausea, and my eyes
feel 'strained'. I suppose I need to take the time to have them
checked somewhere, which in part (inconvenience) defeats the purpose
of the whole on-line experience. I thought it was strange tho that
the same thing happens with both pair leading me to doubt that two dif
companies could make the same error. I double-checked the orders and
verified the numbers on the rx. I have not had the same issues with
my 2 pair of regular single vision glasses I'm wearing via online
purchases.

Affordable Rx sunglasses are the best thing to me since sliced bread,
I wear my Rx shades more than my regular vision glasses now and don't
leave home without a pair.

Now that you mentioned who your online vendor is, I can tell you I
have had problems with seeing double vision with Goggles4U's regular
vision and tinted sunglasses twice this year now out of about the
eight pairs that I have ordered from them. I have order from other
vendors and never ever had the "double vision" problem.

Contact Googles4U for you and their CSR will replace them for you.

My favorite pair of sunglasses is a $8 pair aviators from Zenni,
simply amazing and a pleasure to wear !
