I am about to buy lenses online. I have been reading posts about the
quality of the glasses acquired from these online retailers. I'm
trying to decide on an online merchant so I would like to get some
feedback from people.

Which of the online retailers is your favorite?
Who does better quality work and good customer service?

Please confirm. Are you buying glasses, or lenses? (You said lenses)

If you're only buying lenses, then your choices are much more limited.

P.S. My favorite store for *glasses* is Zenni. They seem to always
get the RX dead perfect, and they don't seem to be having problems at
customs, any more. For a while, their shipments were being held by
customs for weeks, and consequently they were impractically slow to
arrive.

The only online retailer I've ever bought from is Zenni Optical. I've
had no reason to go anywhere else. The cost is the lowest I've seen
and the prescriptions are perfect. I want to try some other retailer
but most of the others get to be over $100 for progressives. Why buy
elsewhere when I can get most any progressive style for less than $70
at Zenni?

I might try Coastal Contacts with my next order.

Googles4u have been getting a lot of negative reviews in this group
plus they don't have frames with temple arms longer than 140mm, which
wouldn't work for me. For these reasons I would never buy from
Goggles4u.

I like several optical companies. My favorite is tied between Zenni
Optical and a company called "Sharpglasses.com" who have short segment
progressives and sell You's brand frames exclusively. I also think
that $39dollar glasses can't be beat for speed (less than 4 days from
order to delivery!). ALll three have been dead on with prescriptions.
Zenni has the most choice in frames and lowest prices and
Sharpglasses.com has the least choice and higher prices, but has the
great You's frames. $39 dollar glasses are great for the classics.
They also supply lenses for your own frames at the same price as a
full set of glasses in most cases.

I have never used progressives (at least not yet) but I got my father
a pair of progressives from 39dollarglasses.com and they are perfect.
The customer service is awesome as they helped every step of the way.
The prices weren't too bad either. My father was an online sceptic
but I guess I showed him. I can recommend CoastalContacts for single
vision because they have great prices and they have a great 30 day
return policy (they pay for shipping back). I have used Goggles4u but
it's hit or miss with them. I think the prices they have for
progressives are too steep, especially for the lenses that they use.
I highly recommend CoastalContacts for single vision.

On a side note, I noticed that 39dollarglasses was the only place that
could do a progressive with a reading segment my step-mother
required. Most of the online places start the reading segment at
+3.0. Does anyone know of a place that does lower prescriptions on
progressives?

They all have their strengths and weaknesses, but here is my run down
based on Quality(Quality = Value+Price+Workmanship+Customer Service)

1. Zenni - Rx always dead on and pricing cheaper than most even
though they are added on separately, no live customer service
2. EyeBuyDirect - Pricing more expensive than others, but customer
service is top notch for returns and replacements
3. GlobaEyeGlasses - Extremely fast production and shipping times and
live customer service
4. Goggles4U - Lots of choices for smaller frames, shipping,
coatings and tint included in their pricing, excellent live customer
service, excellent replacement policy. The only thing I have against
them right not is they have too many Rx errors in the past year I have
bought from them and their workamnship although good is not on par
with other online vendors.

I have now purchased a pair of single vision glasses (or rx
sunglasses) from: Zenni, GlobalEyeglasses, EyeBuyDirect, Goggles4U,
and 39dollarGlasses.
I was very satisfied with Global, EyeBuy, and 39dollar with regard to
quality, value, shipping times, and customer service.
My favorite pair I'm wearing the majority of time now is from EyeBuy
(I'm a bit dismayed lately that it seems every time I visit their site
the prices have increased) but I love their site - its user friendly
and they have a virtual try-on feature, a major plus in my book. And
I tend to prefer vendors whose sites offer the ability to search for
frames by size and/or color in addition to the basic choices of Men's
or Women's/Plastic or Metal etc. Much less time-consuming! I got a
good quality, trendy pair for a ridiculously low price from
GlobalEyeglasses, and a lovely pair of sunglasses from
30dollarglasses.
I don't care for the pair of glasses I got from Zenni or the rx
sunglasses I got from Goggles4U both in terms of quality and
appearance, and Goggles4U customer service can be a bit aggravating.

My first purchase was from Eyebuy Direct. I think at the time they
were running a promo or good discount. I stuck with them only because
of the familiarity. I then bought one pair from 39dollarglasses
because they had a certain color I was looking for. I have to say as
far as quality, I liked 39dollarglasses better. I bought 2 pair of
sunglasses from 39dollarglasses also and are happy with them.

I found out by accident that Zenni sells the sma eframes as someof the
other online stores...just without the markings on them. I just bought
my daughter a cool pair of stainless steel frams from
glassesshop.com...and wouldn't you know it? Zenni has the very same
ones...and in more color options!

Hmm, no one mentioned www.glassesshop.com, does that mean they're bad
or just not outstanding?

Although their review is favorable and presentation is nicely packaged
in a nice box, their overall selection is limited and overpriced.
I also look at Firmo's offerings, good price limited selection in
frames and very limited in lens, but what really pissed me off with
them was their shipping cost for regular parcel service to Canada is
$14.95 and only $4.95 to the US while their lab is in China. I sent
them a email asking why such a big price discrepancy for the same
shipping to the same continent and I am still waiting for answer after
a week, if this is the kind of customer service they have, I am not
buying from them !

I have bought from Glassesshop.com. They aren't bad at all, but they
are more expensive than some of the other sites. They are also a site
who has some of Zenni's frames. I would recommend them.

I've just bought my 4th pair of glasses from EyeBuyDirect.com. I have
been very happy with their products and service. I had a problem with
one pair, which they resolved quickly. They're having a buy one-get
one sale right now, so I picked up 2 more pairs for less than $40.
They look great, and delivery was super fast. I ordered them on Nov
2nd, and I got them in the mail on Nov 10th. Highly recommended.

EyeByDirect is very good. The only thing that I don't care for is that
if you get the standard lenses you have to pay extra for UV coatings.
I forgot to do that the last time I purchased from there..I'm hoping
that the few times I wear the glasses won't hurt my eyes.

Does anyone know if I can have these lenses UV coated by a B &M
optical store?

Thanks!

I have also used EBD and gotten some nice glasses. The only problem I
have is that you have to pay extra for UV coating, and of course, I
forgot to add it to my order...

Does anyone know if UV coating can be added later at a local optical
shop?

My favorite is still Zenni, because I've seen a huge uptick in their
customer service and they are still the cheapest for for me and my
bifocal/progressive glasses. However, I have purchased from almost
every site mentioned on Glassyeyes and I like them all. All have been
spot on and the quality is good...and the standard lenses are thinner
than my $30 extra polycarbs from BJs. (which I didn't know till
recently is affiliated with Luxxotica).

I would pretty much buy from every site listed (and some that aren't)
if thee is a good sale code going on!

Until recently, I bought from Optical4Less and Zenni. My favourite
for quality is Optical4Less, but Zenni would have to be my favourite
for price. Zenni has a lot of dirt cheap frames that aren't always
the sturdiest, but if you want to get some occasional-use type
sunglasses or "costume" type glasses, they are a good bet. I've never
had a problem with the lenses from Zenni either.. I made my first
order from Eyebuydirect this past week during the 2-for-1 sale.

I would definitely try Optical4less if I were you. They were my first
store, and after I tried other stores, I came right back to O4L. They
have very good quality glasses, more so than Zenni. I share the same
sentiments as Milo Bloom. In terms of customer service, I've really
only had to contact them once for more information because there is
usually nothing wrong with their glasses.

Best of luck,
Elgin.
