Good morning,
Please see the undernoted information in relation to the recent avian flu outbreak. This may be of particular interest to those of you who keep domestic fowl.
What is avian influenza
Avian influenza is an airborne disease. It can also be spread by wild birds and rodents whose movements change in response to flooding. Since 2 Nov this year, the national surveillance programme has identified the presence of avian influenza H5N8 (pathogenicity not yet confirmed) in dead wild birds at three separate locations in Scotland ie Cupar, Dornoch, Fraserburgh.
How avian influenza is spread
The avian influenza virus changes frequently, creating new strains, and there is a risk that one of the new strains may spread among people. There is no evidence that any recent strain of avian influenza has been able to spread directly between people.
The disease spreads from bird to bird by direct contact or through contaminated body fluids and faeces. It can also be spread by contaminated feed and water or by, clothing and footwear.
Human health implications
Some strains of bird flu can pass to humans but this is very rare. It usually requires very close contact between humans and infected birds.
Who should dead or sick birds be reported to?
DO NOT TOUCH if you find a single dead bird of prey, gull or wildfowl species (particularly wild geese, wild ducks, swans), or find five or more birds of any other species in the same location and at the same time, please report these incidents to Defra's national telephone helpline (03459 33 55 77 - please select option 7
If you suspect a wildlife crime, please contact the police on 101 and ask if the matter can be referred to a Wildlife Crime Officer. Alternatively, the incident can be reported anonymously to CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.
Report an injured animal to the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) in Scotland.
Telephone: 0000 999 999.
