Iam missing some content in my revit 2013 program. Upon creating a new project the "new project" dialogue box comes up requesting me to chose a template and there are none available to choose from (should be architecture and structural, or something like that.). I've downloaded the revit 2013 extensions to no success. and the two revit architectural updates refuse to install.

In addition if I load in current projects that have been created from another computer using revit 2013 (and do detailed modelling) the program will close itself down without saving upon clicking the green tick

1. Close all Autodesk software

2. Go to Control Panel > Programs and features

3. Select from the list and click Uninstall/Change

4. From the resulting screen the very left button on the bottom will be "Add or Remove Features" Click this

5. The resulting screen will list the content packs that can be installed, please make sure both Australia and US Metric are selected and click Next.

(It is worth noting at this point that during the install process, Revit default to US as the region when accepting the Licence Agreement and this in turn effects the default content that will be installed.)

6. Start up and you should now have the families and templates installed.

I tried that to no prevail, the program just stated several times that it failed to do so.

could a problem be that my laptop is 32bit and the program is running 64bit?

if so is there a way of resolving that issue?

I would like to know if you finally resolved the problem concerning the missing templates. I installed Autodesk Revit Architecture 2013 and I only have Spanish and French Templates. I need the US Metric and Australia. If you have them, could you please send them by email: adria...@hotmail.com

but I have it from other version. The thing is that I have Revit 2014 but I can use the template from 2012. I tried the above mentioned way to update it but it takes ages so I hope there is no harm if I use 2012 template.

i am not sure if this is the correct forum to post this issue. if not, can someone direct me to a proper forum.

i am acting BIM Manager and we are at a cross-road with limitation on access to our company revit library. the i have as the one managing the revit library is, everyone has access to each family. meaning, someone can edit/ make changes to one of our standard families (title blocks, doors, windows, etc.) and save over the top of our standard family. with this happening and the manager not knowing about it, others are using said family and wondering why it is different than the last project they used said family in.

i feel that there should be some limitation on how much control the users have with the library. i would like to get everyones thoughts on how they manage their revit content (family) library?

Honestly, my first thought upon reading your post was why everybody and their brother's uncle is messing with the families without governance. Sounds like the wild west. I would think the first thing you want to do is to restrict access and regain control of the company assets. If the families were built properly before, then why are people needing to reconstruct them? And why is that an individual prerogative?

an example of what is happening is the title block for instance. I made some company approved changes to our title block and some of the projects were still using the previous title block. someone felt they needed a project specific change to their title block. unfortunately, people don't think before they act or they just don't care so they hit save after they made their changes and it saved back to the library. this sort of thing happens to our doors and windows as well

Unfortunately, if your people don't care enough to follow best practices, you've got bigger issues than maintaining a library. Even with good people, this will happen occasionally. Families sometimes need to be modified for a project but they shouldn't be saved to the standard library without pre-authorization. Having a copy of the library in a secure location is probably the easiest way to fix mistakes. Make it clear to everyone that any unauthorized changes to any families will be lost when the modified copy is replaced with the approved version. That usually makes them think before saving.

You'll want to start exploring content management systems that are designed to solve this specific issue. Have a look at for the leading Revit content management system. It even will let you store your system families such as walls, floors, duct, pipe, conduit, etc. In addition, you can manage other types of Revit content such as schedules, materials, and drafting views. For the cost, it is well worth it.

took a machine with full revit versions installed and moved the content libraries folders of R2018 to D. than changed the paths in revit.int under revit user profile. restart revit 2018 all works well (Options\file locations is set correctly) i open Revit 2019 and it complains that some libraries is not correctly set and Options\file locations was cleared and revit is stuck. this brings me to a thought that if Revit installation notice a previous revit version, it uses this existing content library and does not install the current vertion content library - am i right?

I further investigate this, took a new machine (no revit installed yet) and start installing revit 2018 than moved content library to disk D than changes the path in revit.ini and start revit and all work well.

now start installing R2019 and the end of installation, revit 2019 copied all it's libraries to C: (sure it did not see the R2018 content) than i moved R2019 libraries to disk D than changed the path in revit.int and this time all works well

Why not just eliminate the content from local drives and keep your libraries on a shared network drive? That way everyone is working from the same content. Changes and additions can be made all in a single location.

I had an issue with the installation of revit with the content library, I tried to clean uninstall then reinstall it. Followed every steps that are in thes link : -products/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles...

I also deleted manually every thing related to autodesk just to be sure. So I have nothing in my computer linked to revit. But it keeps telling me I have the content installed. Did anybody had the same issue before ?

Hello,

Yeah I also saw that link before getting in touch with the forum, it does not work neither.

That is very strange because i tried to reinstall everything, but as always when installing it tells me that i Have already the content library installled.

And when it's done I have all the revit software, but not the content library (see below)

Hello,

Yes as indicateded in one of the autodesk help page for clean uninstall I cleaned my register.

I also tried Microsoft clean up as you indicate, and just tried the IObit uninstall tool, There is no content library on my computer according to it. (see below) Relaunched the installation just to check : still telling me the content lib is installed.

However, I have the same result as before, It still tells me that the content lib is installed... Which is not ( I made sure to repeat all the operations indicated the autodesk 'clean uninstall' help page before trying what you suggested in your last post.)

It might come from the computer which still thinks that the content lib is installed. Is there any other location on the computer I should check ? (I already have been checking the register)

When installing Revit 2020 this morning using my Autodesk "Desktop app" the 2020 Default Libraries, Family Template and Content Files are all missing in the RVT 2020 folder. Then on the Autodesk down load page although I clicked on 2020 content the link only opens to the 2019 content. I am now doing a clean uninstall for 2020 and will use my Account management download rather then the desktop app. Is this a known bug in the desktop app?

Answer is right there... either you ran the installer too early or something was missed. Sometimes changing the download location helps. Also make sure you have lots of space on your drive to allow for the unpacking of the files.

I did down load all seven files the second time. The error message was cleared for install, however it still did not install the template, content, families or any other libraries files into the RVT 2020 Folder.

After the desktop app failed I tried all 3 web account options and still no content downloads at any install. Each time I did a complete uninstall, cleaned my pc registry and reboot. Also Autodesk has no link for 2020 content. It says revit 2020 but opens as revit 2019

During the installation when you can setup the paths and other options is where you select the libraries. I usually install a few others that usually have some better families than the US versions. You can also go into Windows Programs and select the 2020 Library...click uninstall and it will bring the options to add/remove features and you can select them there.

I know its kind of reviving and old thread but being the first search result when asking for the very first thing and for anyone that finds in the same problem, here is the knowledge page with links for the executable for the libraries and families for each family:

After installing the content libraries, I see that there is a folder program files\revit content libraries 2016\... I tried to run the setup file from here, but it always says "The system could not open the device or file specified"... I have the USB stick in the computer when I run this, and it still does this?

Also, if you're struggling, you can send me a Private Message with your email address and then I can share the default Metric or Imperial families with you. I have a Dropbox Folder with Revit 2016 Content Libraries ready...

To locate your ProgramData Folder, click on your Windows Start Button, then type in %programdata% and hit "Enter", this will then open that folder as a starting point, then you can follow the default locations below.
