Ihave a clunky work-around that I can do to get them to work, but don't want to have to do this step every time that I create a new document. I always want every new document to be created with this set of macros enabled with working keyboard shortcuts!

A way that I can get them to work is to go into the Macros Organizer. In my Normat.docm template, there is a set of macros called NewMacros. This set already exists in my current document. They don't show in this Organizer, but they are there when I list the macros in the document. I can use the Organizer to copy the NewMacros to my current document.

Result: My keyboard shortcut now works. Now, in the Organizer, my current document lists all of the macros twice. The macros were not listed in my current document in this dialog before. Now they are listed twice. I have 46 macros I'd like in the document. Now it lists these twice - so there are now 92. One set of 46 is prefixed with Normal.NewMacros.[macroname]. The next set of 46 is prefixed with Project.NewMacros.[macroname] - which rather proves that the macros were already there to begin with.

Since you are using the name "Normal," are you trying to replace Word's predefined Normal.dotm template? That isn't a good idea. You can customize the Normal template or you can use some other template (with a different name) and load it as an add-in, by putting it in Word's Startup folder.

@Stefan_Blom Was there ever a resolution to this question? I am experiencing the same issue as Susan. The issue seems to have started with the migration to Windows 11. Keystroke shortcuts for my custom macros (part of the Normal template) show up in File->Options->Customize Ribbon->Customize keyboard shortcuts (button). However, the keyboard shortcuts do NOT work! However, I am able to manually run the macros through the Developer->Macros dialog box. Please help!

This macro is part of a module `BookMacros` that lives in the Normal' template's 'Modules' folder. When I inspect keystroke shortcuts through File->Options->Customize Ribbon, I see that the keystroke shortcuts I have defined do indeed show up:

I have the exact same issue. The strange thing is that at 6 AM today, they (the macros with shortcut keys assigned) worked perfectly. At 7:35 AM, the shortcut keys to the macros stopped working. Strange thing is that I can still run my other shortcut keys assigned to styles (i.e., Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.) and other predefined functions in the MS Words. Just can't run them with my own macros anymore.

@Stefan_Blom

I'm experiencing the same problem, although my Word randomly started to show this error since today

Can you please help me / us with this? My macros are also saved in the normal.dotm, but I can't even run them from the marco menu any more.

In Office for Mac desktop applications (e.g PPT v16.4.4) my keyboard shortcuts have suddenly become non-functional. For example, command-C does not copy, command-V does not paste. They are all "greyed out" in the menus (see image). I am running macOS 11.1 on 16" MacBook Pro.

I am having exactly the same problem. Powerpoint was working fine until recently, but over the past few days the keyboard short cuts (cut, paste, save, close, etc.) are grey and non-functional. This is a big pain. I don't think this was associated with any obvious updates to Office or Mac OS -- it seems out of the blue.

I had the same problem, went to system preferences, keyboard - modifier keys at the bottom and set the globe one to no function.. seemed to work even thought shortcuts are still grey...(something to do with an inverted fn key apparently )

Also - I found that changing the settings in OneNote (Preferences > Edit and View > Default Paste Option (choose one of the options), fixed it for me for both OneNote and PowerPoint that I don't have to right-click first anymore.

@Trioptium unfortunately this solution doesn't work. It seems as if Edge breaks down on kb shortcuts after using as a daily driver for a few days (keeping old tabs open and creating new ones). But no idea what causes this behavior as begins sporadically and doesn't follow any patterns of behavior..

Same, in December of 21. So, nearly a whole year since the issue posted, confirmation from at least 15 more users, and no official response? This is very frustrating, as I'm accustomed to using shortcuts to sort my email to keep my inbox tidy, and Outlook is absolutely uncooperative.

I've tried all manner of restarting and re-recording the shortcuts in the keyboard preference panel, but nothing works. Outlook shows the keyboard shortcuts in the menus, so it knows what I want it to do, but gives me a sassy little beep and refuses to do anything when I try to use them.

If this problem continues to happen, please send feedback from within the app (Help menu > Feedback > I don't like something), and then reply here to let us know that you have sent feedback. If willing, please fill in the email field in the feedback form so that it's possible to contact you in case more information is required. When you send feedback, it includes some diagnostic information about your computer which may help investigate the issue.

I just submitted feedback through the app, as asked. There was no space to enter my email on the feedback form. I've also included a screenshot showing the problem. Command-n does work (as do all the others), but it is grey on the menu. Odd.

The windows key functions as the apple key, the problem is that they are located at a different location, and my muscle memory is so set on finding the 'command' key next to the spacebar that I keep executing my shortcuts with alt i.s.o. apple key (and vice versa)

Under the Keyboard System Preferences pane there is a button for "Modifier Keys" which allows you to remap command/option/control on a per-keyboard basis. There is no need to use an external tool to switch the keys.

Oftentimes, a quick reboot can solve many software-related keyboard issues. Save your work, shut down your laptop, wait for a few seconds, and then power it back on. This can refresh the system and resolve temporary glitches. If none of the above steps work, and you suspect a recent software change may be the culprit, you can perform a system restore to revert your laptop to a previous working state.

Outdated or corrupt keyboard drivers can lead to keyboard problems. To update your keyboard driver, go to the Device Manager on your laptop. Find the Keyboards section, right-click on your keyboard, and select Update driver. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update. Try disabling and re-enabling it in order to reset the keyboard and fix minor issues.

If you work primarily from home or an office, consider attaching an external keyboard to your laptop and check if it works. Like built-in laptop keyboards, external keyboards are sturdy and easy to clean. Surface accessories such as keyboards are designed to be compatible with your digital lifestyle, and they come with warranty support from Microsoft.

yeah, some of my keys on my laptop wont work e.g. 9, m, =, d, etc. i havent spilled anything and i tried checking for dust, crumbs and tried to rotate it on a 45 degree angle and tap to see anything would come out. i havent tried any softwares or anything to fix it. anyway to fix it?

Same here...I thought I got Windex on base when wiping the keyboard down, but none of the keys are came back a couple of hours later a using a drying (figure at least one would come back). Ones out are S, D, U, O, 8, 9 , [, ], -, =, N, M and others. Using a USB keyboard to type this. I checked Windows updates and I haven't seen anything recent.

I had this problem, and some time ago purchased just the keypad/membrane assembly on ebay for like $20. I was then able to remove the old keypad/membrane (with the zillion rivets) and replace it. I used blue loctite on the rivets when I reinstalled. So this is possible and there is at least one thread on the internet with more details. However I don't see the bare keypad/membranes available for purchase on ebay. So I would agree with Zieg that the best approach is to get a working bare keyboard base with the keypad/membrane installed. These do seem to be available on ebay last I checked for $80 -100.

Hi Zieg! Sorry for my late response. I removed the rivets by punching out the keyboard from the top with a metal punch at the corners of each key. Obviously this is after disassembling the rest of the keyboard base and I think I also detached all the plastic key caps first. And obviously this trashed the keyboard membrane assembly. I put tape over the rivets and I did this on top of a pan that would catch any rivets that got past the tape as they popped out. It seems like a fairly destructive process, but the rivets actually pop out pretty readily once you get the hang of it. And there is nothing to lose since the alternative is buying a whole new keyboard base with a keypad assembly installed.

Hi Uzair! Sorry for the late response. There are currently a bunch of the surface book keyboard membrane assemblies on eBay, but they cost around $50. Entire keyboard base assemblies with the keyboard are around $100, which is probably the better way to go. I am still using my surface book with the replaced keyboard as my primary personal PC and it is working fine.

I have had some success with this problem. I found that bringing up a Word Document and fiddling around with the keys, that eventually the keys would work, but only temporarily. Shortly after the keys would stop working again.

But just now, with a Word Document up, and the problem-keys working, however temporary, I held down the problem-keys and held down the on/off button till the laptop shutdown. On turning the laptop back on, the keys have been working fine. That was 30 minutes ago. I've been typing away with no problem.

I am just settling in a new job and what I got on my hardware setup is a Mac with a Microsoft keyboard. This support page indicates that the Control key on my PC keyboard should be mapping to Mac's Command key but it does not (e.g. CtrlC/V does not work).
