Smart Card Reader Driver for all models which base on the AU9540/AU9580 IC Solution, this series card reader Without SD Card Slot. Check your Smart Card Reader Slot before downloading the Driver, make sure download the correct version driver.

I have smart card reader built-into this laptop, however, whenever I insert a card - it'll read it for a few seconds, then the USB connection to the reader gets powered down and thus the card disappears in the systems eyes.

The Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Smart Card Reader Interface (0bda:0165) is actually a Stanley Global SGT111 Smart Card Reader.
The Alcor Micro Corp. AU9540 Smartcard Reader (058f:9540) is a smart card reader that I added when I bought my Lenovo ThinkPad T14 (not knowing that it had compatibility issues with Linux).

A day before I have beenexperimenting with the GnuPG keycardand found out it is working well with the smart card reader on my trustyT470.The card I have orderedcomes with the Mifare DESFire EV1 compatible RFID/NFC chip inside. Veryplainly, NFC is the RFID with encrypted communication, increasing thesecurity of the humble RFID. The sad part is that nor the RFID neither theNFC is in any way connected to the GnuPG circuitry inside the card. It isbasically a keycard that happens to have a NFC compatible tag included inits form factor. I am not sure why such product even exists, as it cannotbe used for the OpenPGP purposes with a smartphone (readily equipped withan NFC), only with the computer (some models, including mine have thesmartcard reader available). Maybe it is a precursor for some furtherversion of this card, where the functionality will be finally fusedtogether.

My plan was to use the card on both the laptop and the Android phone, whereOpenKeychain app would read the keys from the card over NFC, so they wouldnot be stored in the phone's filesystem. Nor the laptop's one, for thatmatter, which is good as both of these devices could be lost. I know thatthere is a Yubikey NEO that has both the USB and the NFC, so it can work onboth my devices, but I simply like the smartcard form-factor far better.

The thread discusses specifically the same device my ThinkPad possesses, the 058f:9540 Alcor Micro Corp. AU9540 Smartcard Reader. Yeah, it ishandling the smartcard functionality, but at the same time it appears toalso handle the NFC. LenovoT470 Hardware Maintenance Manualdescribes NFC module on the page 58. A page above it also states that theconnectors for a smartcard module is physically next to the NFC module(connectors 14 and 13 respectively). Their close proximity next to eachother supports the idea that the same Alcor AU9540 chip is handling both.

Could it work with NFC based GnuPG security token? This is the mostimportant question to me. There is aFidesmo Card andFidesmo Card 2.0 (notsure about the difference at this point). But it is a my beloved smartcardformat. Fidesmo reportedly works with OpenKeychain. If not already done, porting the code to work on the laptop should not be too hard, if theactual chipset requirements are met. Using an OpenPGP keycard costingaround 15 EUR on both laptop and a phone at the same time appeals to me.Not to mention other features such devices offer, including, but notlimited to secure Bitcoin storage, U2F two-factor authentication, PGP emailencryption, secure One-Time Password generation and git commit signing,I have discussed here.

Install pcsc-tools and start the pcsc_scan(1) utility, then connect the Smart card reader and finally insert a card.If you see output like this, the smart card reader and also the card have been successfully recognized.

When interfacing with a TV-card for live TV and recording (PVR/DVR), you may need to assign the smartcard reader to the video user group allowing decryption. When using a Smargo Smartreader consider the following udev rule:

If the browser is not able to use the smart card data, probably it is not aware of the service which provides access to the device. This happens if you plug in the smart card reader after you open Firefox. To solve this issue, simply restart Firefox.

I don't have that reader, but on Catalina, I don't see the smart card (CAC) in Keychain Access. However, Safari can access the CAC and authenticate sites with it. No idea if this is true for all users/all smart cards.

Time extension requests are not supported.
Firmwares version < 2.06 are bogus: APDU with 0x7B (123) bytes expected do not work with a 14443 card. The reader returns SW=63 00 instead.
See Patch for pcsclite for the ACR122U NFC reader for a workaround to be used with my CCID driver
The firmware 2.14 may report bStatus = 0x00 indicating No Error but with bError = 0xFE indicating ICC_MUTE, CCID timed out while talking to the ICC. See empty response -> crash on empty sw1

Communication to the reader sometimes fails with LIBUSB_ERROR_TIMEOUT. Some smart cards require a different reader firmware. This reader is integrated in some HP laptops (ZBook, EliteBook, etc.) or Lenovo laptops (P15 Gen1, etc.).

WARNING: Secure Pin Entry feature is bogus and has been disabled in version 1.4.6 of driver.

firmware < 1.24 is bogus. SetParameters fails with a card of ATR 3B 16 96 41 73 74 72 69 64. The smart card reader part is from SCM.

To install AD Bridge to support Smart Cards, you must include the smartcard option when you run the installer. If AD Bridge is already installed, run the installer again with the smartcard option.
