To register for GLACUHO and for the link to book your room, please visit http://www.glacuho.org/event/2016. See you in Cincinnati! Dear Members of GLACUHO, The committee experience in GLACUHO is one that many professionals find allow them to get their start in the professional association network. Without the work of our committees, our association would not be able to create all the opportunities and educational sharing that are available to our members. The committees of the association are a great way to be involved and network with other professionals with varying experiences and years in the field, as well as offer opportunities to work on things in which you are passionate about, but may not have responsibility for on a day-to-day basis. Whether your reason for getting involved in committee work is to connect with other professionals in the field, work on things you enjoy but do not have a daily responsibility for, or learning from your committee work, committee involvement offers something for everyone! Committee applications are now available on the GLACUHO website at http://www.glacuho.org/?Committee_Info and are due by Noon, EST on Monday, November 14. If you are interested in joining a committee but have additional questions, please feel free to reach out to any of the current chairs, or me. I look forward to seeing your committee application this November! With GLACUHO Pride,

Anyone currently working in the GLACUHO region is welcome to sign up to participate! Along with a traditional mentor/mentee relationship, we are launching a new initiative. “Connections” is a small cohort of professionals who ideally would connect at the conference that have some common interest or experience. The purpose of this is to allow professionals to simply connect with others in the field and expand their professional network, who may not be looking for a mentoring relationship. If you are interested please check it out here!

The GLACUHO Facilities & Operations Committee is bring back the Conference Conservation Challenge (C3) to bring awareness to sustainability suggestion and to show how easy it is for us to reduce our carbon footprint, especially at conferences. The challenge encompasses almost everything, from carpooling to how long a shower one takes. Every effort, no matter how small, helps in conserving resources and helping eliminate unnecessary waste. It’s very easy to help conserve and be sustainable while at GLACUHO. Carpooling instead of taking several vehicles will not only help reduce the amount of pollutants released by auto emissions, but will help reduce gas and parking costs. If you are presenting, consider having online materials instead of printing handouts. This will significantly reduce the amount of paper you need to use (and carry) during the conference. Also, bring your own conference bag and water bottle while in attendance. You can save in costs of buying bags and help reduce the amount of paper or plastic cups that are used at water stations. For GLACUHO 2016, consider taking the C3 Challenge! Carpool, bring your own conference bag or water bottle, have online resources for your presentation, share rooms with others! Be sure to come by our table and complete the 2016 C3 Challenge survey and tell GLACUHO how you are being sustainable! Below are some results from GLACUHO 2012’s C3 Challenge:
Hyatt Regency Conference Hotel Sustainable Practices The GLACUHO Facilities & Operations Committee invites you to help conserve and be sustainable while attending the annual conference this year in Cincinnati. The official conference hotel, the Hyatt Regency, provides the following sustainability practices to keep in mind while you are packing for and attending the conference. In addition to what the hotel offers below, you are also invited to participate in the Conference Conservation Challenge (C3) to help reduce our footprint. Full sets of linens are available in each room. Housekeeping at the hotel typically does not replace bed linens unless a guest has been staying in the room for multiple days, but can be done on request. Towels and washcloths that are placed on the floor or within the tub will be replaced with newer towels. In order to conserve the water and energy necessary to replenish these items, consider hanging your towels and washcloths back up on the bathroom bars. Housekeeping will not take them if they are hanging, but they are likely to fold them back up so they look nice. The Hyatt informed us that guests can also place the “Do Not Disturb” hanger on the outside of their doors and housekeeping will not come into the room for any reason to exchange the linens. Also within the rooms is one bin where guests can place waste and recycling. There are not specific recycling bins within the rooms or on the floors, but waste is sorted out from what can be recycled after the bins are taken out of the rooms. There are no water fountains or water refill stations on the floors of the hotel. However, water fountains can be found in the public areas of the hotel as well as the main lobby. You are encouraged to bring your own reusable water bottle to the conference and to use these refill stations if you wish. If you do not have a reusable water bottle, you can purchase one in the hotel gift shop. Finally, there are a number of other sustainable practices the Hyatt Regency told us that they engage in. The restaurant within the hotel uses a farm-to-table model meaning the food that is used is produced and purchased locally. Items within the gift shop and convenience store that are newly expired are not just thrown away, but are given to any staff who may want them so long as they are still good. The indoor pool is a salt water pool which utilizes less chemicals.
Dear GLACUHO Conference Attendees, As we enter the last couple of weeks before our 44th Annual Conference, I want to take this time to encourage you to attend our Exhibitor Show on Monday, November 14th. The relationships we have with our corporate sponsors is outstanding and we should be thanking them for their support provided by both booth registrations and sponsorship dollars. They too are excited about reconnecting with old friends and meeting new alike. With that being said, many of you will start to receive invitations and other information regarding their products and services over the next couple of weeks. I ask that you please not view these endorsements as junk mail, “spam” or as an inconvenience of your time, but rather as an invitation and opportunity to learn about the people, products, and services that we hear about and see every day in our field. Please remember that just because you do not make the financial or purchasing decisions in your department now, doesn’t mean you won’t very soon, so take the time to introduce yourself and ask any questions you may have. I look forward to seeing you in Cincinnati.
