How did you become involved in GLACUHO?

I was encouraged to attend my first conference when I was working in the Chicago area by many of the great people I met through CASCHA. I went to Indianapolis in 2013 and had a really great experience. The people of GLACUHO are incredibly welcoming and very helpful. Even though I was the only delegate from my institution I was not alone at any point while I was there. This is how I knew GLACUHO is a good place for me to be connected.

What advice would you give someone looking to get involved in a professional organization?

The number one piece of advice is to just get out there and do something, that's what I did. GLACUHO makes it very easy to join a committee by filling out the simple form, but I've found that whatever organization or little piece of involvement you're looking for, you can do just by asking. If you want to help, people are welcoming to that. If you don't know where to start, talk to someone who is involved. Send an email or a tweet and say, "I'm looking to get involved, but I don't know how." There are lots of great professionals that can steer you in the right direction.

What has been your greatest professional learning opportunity?

I have been fortunate to work at two institutions, which have each challenged me in different ways. There are a number of particular moments I can pinpoint where, looking back, it is easy to say, "wow, I learned a lot from that experience." One particular case was as a new hall director when a student staff member came to me scared because she learned about a sexual assault that may have occurred. It is not an experience I recall with warm and fuzzy feelings. I hope never to have to respond to that exact situation again, but the skills I came away with have helped me numerous times since that point. The biggest takeaways are compassionate listening, following policies and procedures and putting students first – including student staff.

What has been your greatest professional accomplishment in the past year?

This past year has been characterized by my spreading my wings and trying new things. Not all have been successful, but I think the fact that I'm putting myself out there and trying stuff because it will help my students or my colleagues or me is a success in its own right. Some highlights are my involvement in the prostaff training committee at SIUE, submitting (unsuccessfully) a program proposal for NASPA, joining a GLACUHO committee for the first time, and very recently getting accepted for the 2016 PDI cohort. I'm looking forward to building on these to create further successes in 2016 and beyond.

2016 Winter Meeting Registration

Registration is live for the 2016 Winter Meeting which will take place on February 14th and 15th in Brookston, Indiana.  The registration deadline is January 31, 2016.

25 THOUGHTS FOR WINTER MEETING

The board wishes to share some knowledge, tradition, tips, and thoughts with you.

  1. Introduce yourself to people you do not know.
  2. Bundle up for the walk to the dining hall.  It can get quite chilly. Meals are served at the posted times.  Please do not be late.
  3. For the convenience of our committee members to have access to their cabins, the cabin doors are unlocked.
  4. Read everything that is handed to you for discussions. Everyone’s opinion matters.
  5. Be open-minded and listen to others’ opinions.  At times, you may need to take a stand.  At other times, you may need to compromise.
  6. The camp is served by well water, so you may wish to bring your own bottled water for drinking purposes.
  7. When it comes to discussions, try not to repeat things in the interest of time.
  8. Be kind to the campers that will be sharing this space with us.
  9. Be yourself.
  10. The sharing of food/snacks is a strong tradition of the Winter Meeting, and very much encouraged.
  11. Take good notes.  We always need to reflect on discussions later.
  12. Make this experience worthwhile and productive.  This is the only time the working members of the Association get together in their entirety.
  13. When someone is excited about sharing an idea, please let them have the stage.
  14. Smile a lot.  It will make the time we spend together more fun.
  15. Do not stay up too late on Sunday since there will still be work to be done on Monday morning.
  16. Talk slow, but think quick.
  17. If someone snores, do not bring it up the next day.  Bring earplugs.
  18. Tell the Camp Tecumseh Staff that you appreciate them hosting us.
  19. Keep in touch with one another when you leave.  The business of GLACUHO needs to be done all year long.
  20. Beware of the Mafia.  They usually make an appearance on Sunday night (…ask veteran campers about what this means…).
  21. Do not worry about fashion.  Be comfortable, it is the outdoors.
  22. Give yourself a pat on the back when you volunteer and give of yourself (…attending the Winter Meeting counts…).
  23. Be attentive during everyone’s closing reports.
  24. Take good notes so that you can follow up on tasks and responsibilities.
  25. Come to the Winter Meeting with two new ideas for your committee.  We can never have enough new ideas.

GLACUHO Resume Review

Each year GLACUHO’s Professional Foundations Committee offers GLACUHO members the opportunity to have their resume reviewed or review another member’s resume. Whether you are a graduate student preparing for the job market, a new professional looking to update your resume with your new job experiences, or an experienced housing professional searching for that specific next role, the Resume Review Program offered by GLACUHO offers an opportunity for all members to improve their resume.

GLACUHO’s Resume Review Program strives to match those who submit resumes for review with reviewers who have experience in both the area of expertise and institution type our members are seeking to advance in. Because of this, we need as many members as possible to volunteer their time to review resumes. The Resume Review Program is only as successful as our members make it!

The GLACUHO 2016 Resume Review will be accepting submissions for both resume review and resume reviewers from now until Friday, February 5th, 2016. Applications should be submitted online. The week of February 8th-12th, 2016 you will receive an email from the Resume Review sub-committee with notification of your peer reviewer. Additionally, all who submit resumes for review will also receive comments from the Professional Foundations Committee Resume Review Team.

Any questions that you have regarding the GLACUHO 2016 Resume Review should be submitted to the
 Professional Foundations Resume Review Team.
