Tee Adams -- Residence Director -- Northwestern University

How did you become involved in GLACUHO?  From the time I was an undergraduate student until now I always wanted to be a part of the GLACUHO organization. I was able to see how much joy the professionals on my campus got from being a part of GLACUHO. Therefore, when I received my first full time position as a residence director, one of my first priorities was to become a member of the GLACUHO organization. My first step toward that was presenting a program at the annual conference and applying to be a committee member.

What advice would you give someone looking to get involved in a professional organization? I would say to act on your instinct before you talk yourself out of it. There are so many benefits that come with getting involved in a professional organization and the only way to gain those benefits is to overcome the fear of rejection and just put yourself out there.

What has been your greatest professional learning opportunity? To be honest, I think every day I do my work, I also gain a great learning opportunity. Whether I am attending a conference or in a meeting with a student, I am always learning more about myself and my craft. The beauty of working in this field is that being a life-long learner is not only expected but actually required (if you want to be effective at your job).

What has been your greatest professional accomplishment in the past year? My greatest professional accomplishment this year was definitely securing my first full time position as a Residence Director at Northwestern University. I am so blessed to work at an institution that helps me foster all of the knowledge and skill set I gained while in school and couple it with the passion I have for working with students. When you are fortunate enough to work at an institution that is supportive and committed to giving students great experiences, it is really hard not to be happy with the work that you do.

A Few Words from your New Illinois State Delegate

Dear GLACUHO Members of Illinois –

I am beyond excited to serve GLACUHO as the Illinois State Delegate, and I look forward to working with you all in the coming years. In the meantime, please enjoy this jam-packed newsletter that includes a challenge from the Contemporary Issues Committee, a proposal for the March board meeting, a budget update, and more.

Looking for change, GLACUHO?

Change feels different for everyone, but it’s safe to say that it doesn’t always feel comfortable. Today, the Contemporary Issues Committee challenges you to sit with change for just a little while by brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand.

Make sure to take a moment to reflect on this experience by describing: What it felt like for you to change and do a basic life activity differently? How you can relate this to how you personally respond to change? Did this activity impact how you would handle change conversations with those you supervise?

Minutes to Fitness

The GLACUHO Health and Wellness Committee would like to announce the beginning of the 2016 Minutes to Fitness. This initiative is intended to encourage and recognize GLACUHO members for minutes dedicated to fitness by having participants log daily the minutes they dedicated to fitness. This could include a building walk, cleaning your apartment, a run, weight lifting, or even yoga! The purpose of this initiative is to get members moving and grooving!

Once you register, you'll receive a link to the log page via email. Be sure to bookmark this link because we hope you'll use it often!

The 10 participants with the most minutes at the end of each month will be recognized via social media, and the 10 members with the most minutes by the annual conference will be recognized at the conference and will receive a health and wellness swag pack!

If you have any questions, feel free to contact the
Health and Wellness Chair.

Share your Feedback

The GLACUHO Board of Directors created a proposal process that, in part, allows for more transparency and input into the operations of the association. This proposal is the first in which the full process will be implemented. This includes a chance for GLACUHO members to receive a preview of the proposal, ask questions, and provide input.

At the March Business Meeting (to be scheduled, held virtually), the GLACUHO Board of Directors will be reviewing a proposal to approve funding for a featured speaker for SHOs at the annual conference. The executive summary and some additional information can be found below. This proposal was submitted by the Programming & Development committee. Please use this discussion thread to post any questions or comments, or work with your state delegate to provide input.

To share your thoughts, either contact your state delegate or sign into GLACUHO.org and share your feedback or questions directly on the forum.
