Happy Friday, Illinois!

Here we are -- a couple of weeks into the new year and one week away from the start of a new presidency. 2017 is bound to bring plenty of change as new years tend to do, and I truly hope we all heed President Obama's advice from his farewell address on January 10, 2017:

It falls to each of us to be those anxious, jealous guardians of our democracy; to embrace the joyous task we’ve been given to continually try to improve this great nation of ours.  Because for all our outward differences, we all share the same proud title:  Citizen.

Although President Obama was referring to our civic duties as citizen's, I believe this advice can be prudent to many aspects of our lives: our work, our family, our other obligations. I might offer up the follow rewrite to apply this advice to our work within GLACUHO:

It falls to each of us to be those anxious, jealous guardians of GLACUHO; to embrace the joyous task we’ve been given to continually try to improve this great professional association of ours.  Because for all our outward differences, we all share the same proud title:  Member.

It is in the work that we complete together this year, that will help us to manage change on our own campuses -- to stay ahead of the inevitable and offer solutions to avoid crises.

And now for the good stuff. We have a few updates, including an opportunity to deepen your involvement with GLACURH and a video from our Contemporary Issues Committee. The Communications and Marketing Committee is hard at work on the Winter 2017 issue of TRENDS and the Professional Foundations Committee is wrapping up details for the Professional Development Institute in February.

If you haven't sent me a quick email letting me know what committee to which you have been assigned and whether I should expect to see you at Winter Meeting, please take a moment to do so by clicking my signature line below.

All the best,

The Contemporary Issue for this year is Student Advocacy: Helping Support Students with Dissenting Behaviors. Throughout the year, there will be videos in the State Newsletters designed to acclimate the membership to the topic.

This month's video is about the protest conducted by the University of Minnesota Football team in reaction to 10 of their teammates being suspended for violations of Title IX. The video is approximately 3 minutes long. After watching the video, please feel free to participate in a discussion on Twitter @glacuho #dissentingbehaviors or on the GLACUHO Facebook page. The full story published on December 16, 2016 by the Associated Press can be found here.

This video does not necessarily represent the views of GLACUHO, the Contemporary Issues Committee, or it's members. It is designed to promote thought and conversation surrounding the topic of dissent.

Are you interested in serving as a faculty member for the Mid-Level Institute?

For your time and dedication, you would receive a small stipend, plus the great reward of knowing you have mentored and given back to professionals in the field. In order to serve as MLI faculty, you must be able to commit to the following:

  • Commit to spending the dates of MLI, June 4-5, 2017, on-site participating in MLI in Indianapolis, Indiana (this runs concurrently with the GLACUHO Summer Board meeting).

  • Present a two-hour presentation on an area of expertise. Applicants are asked to propose their own topics during the application process.

  • Mentor 2-3 professionals during MLI and continue after (if desired by participants)

As part of the application process, you will need to provide the following:

  • A proposed topic(s) for presentation;

  • A description of your previous experience with mentorship at your institution and/or within GLACUHO; and

  • A recent (< 3 years) resume.

The application deadline for prospective faculty members is Friday, January 20, 2017, at 1:00pm Eastern.
