Letter from the President

Dear GLACUHO Members,

As many of us return from the ACUHO-I Annual Conference and Exposition, I wanted to provide updates on many items from this summer.

Leadership Position Transitions

The GLACUHO Board is completing the transition of three positions where individuals accepted positions outside of the region.

  • GLACUHO Secretary - Kelsey Cripe (Eastern Illinois University) has been appointed to serve in this role through the November 2017 conference. Kelsey replaced Kim Christian
  • GLACUHO Facilities and Operations Committee Chair - Robert King (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) has been appointed to serve in this role through the November 2017 conference. Robert replaces Kim Hardaway.
  • ACUHO-I Foundation Representative for GLACUHO - Scott Boden (Ohio State University) has been recommended and approved by the Foundation Board to serve in this role. Scott replaces Jacque Bollinger for the remainder of her term and begins the next term (in January 2017).

We appreciate the time, effort, and dedication that Kim, Jacque, and Kim gave to GLACUHO.

ACUHO-I Regional Affiliation Task Force

Matt Kovach (Ball State University) and Stacy Oliver-Sikorski (Lake Forest College) represent GLACUHO on the ACUHO-I Regional Affiliation Task Force. This group is taking a close look at the relationship between ACUHO-I and the regional associations, such as GLACUHO. At this point it is clear that the we are looking for ways for the associations to complement offerings and assist one another, but to continue the "loose" affiliation that is often described as sister associations rather than a hierarchy. The work of the group continues with a report expected this fall. We thank Matt and Stacy for their work and for lending strong voices for our region in this process.

Strategic Plan Updates

Governance - The group has been reviewing feedback from a variety of documents, investigated structures in other housing organizations (and beyond), and continues to work on creating a suggested structure to address the needs of GLACUHO. We do not expect the scope of this work to extend into committee realignment, something that may be looked at in the future.

Diversity & Inclusion - This group is continuing to refine suggestions for additional opportunities, education, offerings, and initiatives to help make GLACUHO feel like a place that all housing professionals feel comfortable calling their regional home.

Professional Development Opportunities/Services - The Programming & Development committee has added the ACUHO-I competencies to our annual conference program offerings.

Financial Stability - The group has created monthly and annual reporting guidelines, created suggested position requirements, is investigating the use of an outside financial advisor, and working on budget projections,

Annual Conference Registration

A few questions have come through regarding 2017 conference registration costs. We are finalizing conference sponsorship and plan to set the rate by mid-August. In June, the Board of Directors voted to remove conference funding support in the annual GLACUHO budget. This removes a cyclical process of taking money in that raises the conference fee and reinvesting it right back into the conference. Additionally, the delegate fee that is included in conference registration that is used to fund ongoing initiatives and costs for operation throughout the year will be reexamined in the second year of the term of each Treasurer. As you plan for staff to attend the conference this fall, it is safe to say that we have reached a point where the registration fee will rise above the $200 mark. At the ACUHO-I conference, President-Elect Michelle Sujka and I learned that we currently have among the lowest registration rates across all regional conferences and expect our rate to still remain in the lower to mid-range of registration fees. We strive to balance the value of what is offered with the reality of what it costs to host an event such as our conference.

Please let me know if if you have any questions about the items above. It was great to see many of you at the social in Seattle. Thank you to those of you who stayed back to cover our campuses and keep the work on the ground moving forward.

I wish you the best as you welcome new staff, have returning staff see their roles with renewed focus, and prepare to provide your residents a life changing experience in university housing.

Nominations Now Open

Nominations are now being accepted for appointed and elected leadership roles. As you know, we rely on the time and talent of volunteers to serve the association and continue the work of moving our professional development initiatives forward. I hope you will take a few minutes to share the names of those who you feel would make excellent leaders of our association — including your own.

Most positions require a two-year commitment to our association. President-Elect role requires a three-year commitment. If you or your intended nominee are unable to make that commitment, please connect with me and we can discuss other upcoming involvement opportunities within the association, including committee memberships and task force service.

Nominees will be contacted by a member of the Board of Directors with next steps for pursuing candidacy. Nominations will be accepted until September 15, 2016.

For more information or to submit a nomination, visit our leadership nominations page:

Conference Bid Process

In early February 2016, I announced the opening of the Conference Bidding process for the State of Illinois to host the 2018 GLACUHO’s Annual Conference. Interested institutions had until June 1, 2016 to submit a letter of interests. Though there were many phone calls with institutions, no letter of interested was submitted from an institution in the State of Illinois. Given the current fiscal climate of Illinois this did not surprise the GLACUHO Board of Directors.

At this time, since no letters of interest were submitted, we are opening the call for the 2018 GLACUHO Annual Conference to all four states. If your institution has ever considered hosting a GLACUHO conference, or you’d like to know more about what it entails, please consider this an invitation to get in touch with me for a conversation about the bidding process and timeline. We have plenty of resources available that can help guide you as you explore this great opportunity.

To give you a general sense of what the bidding process looks like, here are some of the major dates for you to consider as you begin or continue conversations at your respective institutions:
•June 20, 2016: Call for Bids is officially released by the Past President to all four states.
•June 20, 2016 – July 31, 2016: Past President is available for consultation with interested institutions
•August 1, 2016: Formal letters of intent are due to the Past President from institutions wishing to participate in the bidding process
•October 3, 2016: Written bid proposals are due to the GLACUHO Tri-Presidents for final consideration
•November 13, 2016: Bid presentations and GLACUHO Board of Directors vote takes place at the 2016 Annual Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio
•November 15, 2016: Host institution(s) for the 2018 Annual Conference are announced to the GLACUHO membership

If you would like to set up a conversation to talk about this great opportunity, please send me an email at pastpr...@glacuho.org. I’m looking forward to hearing from you!
