Happy Monday, Illinois!

On this day in 1940, the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 came into effect. The updates to this act go into effect on December 1st, but I'm sure this is already on your radar.

The annual conference is coming up, so PLEASE make sure you are registered. There will be a ton of networking opportunities and gobs of professional development to add to your housing toolbox.

Also in this update is the committee application, info on exhibitors, an opportunity to give back through the Silent Auction, an announcement for an upcoming FREE webinar, and a challenge form the Facilities & Operations Committee.

All the best,

Dear Members of GLACUHO,

The committee experience in GLACUHO is one that many professionals find allow them to get their start in the professional association network. Without the work of our committees, our association would not be able to create all the opportunities and educational sharing that are available to our members.

The committees of the association are a great way to be involved and network with other professionals with varying experiences and years in the field, as well as offer opportunities to work on things in which you are passionate about, but may not have responsibility for on a day-to-day basis.

Whether your reason for getting involved in committee work is to connect with other professionals in the field, work on things you enjoy but do not have a daily responsibility for, or learning from your committee work, committee involvement offers something for everyone!

Committee applications are now available on the GLACUHO website at http://www.glacuho.org/?Committee_Info and are due by Noon, EST on Monday, November 14. If you are interested in joining a committee but have additional questions, please feel free to reach out to any of the current chairs, or me. I look forward to seeing your committee application this November!

With GLACUHO Pride,

The GLACUHO Facilities & Operations Committee is bring back the Conference Conservation Challenge (C3) to bring awareness to sustainability suggestion and to show how easy it is for us to reduce our carbon footprint, especially at conferences.  The challenge encompasses almost everything, from carpooling to how long a shower one takes.  Every effort, no matter how small, helps in conserving resources and helping eliminate unnecessary waste.

It’s very easy to help conserve and be sustainable while at GLACUHO.  Carpooling instead of taking several vehicles will not only help reduce the amount of pollutants released by auto emissions, but will help reduce gas and parking costs.  If you are presenting, consider having online materials instead of printing handouts.  This will significantly reduce the amount of paper you need to use (and carry) during the conference.  Also, bring your own conference bag and water bottle while in attendance.  You can save in costs of buying bags and help reduce the amount of paper or plastic cups that are used at water stations.

For GLACUHO 2016, consider taking the C3 Challenge!  Carpool, bring your own conference bag or water bottle, have online resources for your presentation, share rooms with others!  Be sure to come by our table and complete the 2016 C3 Challenge survey and tell GLACUHO how you are being sustainable!  Below are some results from GLACUHO 2012’s C3 Challenge:

Dear GLACUHO Conference Attendees,

As we enter the last couple of weeks before our 44th Annual Conference, I want to take this time to encourage you to attend our Exhibitor Show on Monday, November 14th.  The relationships we have with our corporate sponsors is outstanding and we should be thanking them for their support provided by both booth registrations and sponsorship dollars.  They too are excited about reconnecting with old friends and meeting new alike. With that being said, many of you will start to receive invitations and other information regarding their products and services over the next couple of weeks.  I ask that you please not view these endorsements as junk mail, “spam” or as an inconvenience of your time, but rather as an invitation and opportunity to learn about the people, products, and services that we hear about and see every day in our field. Please remember that just because you do not make the financial or purchasing decisions in your department now, doesn’t mean you won’t very soon, so take the time to introduce yourself and ask any questions you may have.  I look forward to seeing you in Cincinnati.
