Hello friends and supporters of Glacial Lakes Conservancy!
CELEBRATE WITH US OUR LATEST CONSERVATION PROJECT!
Please raise your glass on New Year's Eve to toast Bill and Andrea
Iwen of Algoma, who donated a 43-acre conservation easement this week
to Glacial Lakes Conservancy. This is GLC's first easement in Kewaunee
County!
The Iwen's private land within, and next to, the C.D. (Buzz) Basadny
Fish and Wildlife Area is situated along the Kewaunee River
environmental corridor of the southern Door Peninsula and contains
riverbank, hardwood floodplain forest, grasslands, wetlands, upland
woods, open fields and scenic vistas. Maintaining a vegetative buffer
along the river is important for protecting habitat for small mammals,
upland game, native populations of fish, and the seasonal migration of
trout and salmon and migratory birds and raptors along the Lake
Michigan Flyway corridor. The Kewaunee River and Grasslands is one of
Wisconsin’s Land Legacy Places of conservation significance.
MORE GOOD NEWS!
Also in Kewaunee County, we can report Mashek Creek Project success!
This 25-acre parcel with its 1,664 feet of high ecologically valued
undisturbed Lake Michigan shoreline has been purchased and transferred
to the WDNR in October with the help of project funding from GLC’s
Board of Directors, one very dedicated GLC volunteer, a tireless
project committee and conservation-minded sellers who have worked
since 2007 to make this project a reality.
Mashek Creek is a mix of northern mesic forest, Great Lakes beach, and
surrogate grasslands, which provides habitat for an important stopover
location for migratory birds. This land purchase also represents the
first and only public land ownership along Lake Michigan in Kewaunee
County (aside from two city parks in Algoma and Kewaunee). This new
shoreline area will be available for nature-based recreational and
educational opportunities.
As a Wisconsin Land Legacy Place, large stretches of still undeveloped
Lake Michigan shoreline in Kewaunee County offer the best
opportunities Glacial Lakes Conservancy has to protect this very
significant ecological landscape. Many thanks to everyone involved in
the Mashek Creek project, including Wisconsin’s Knowles-Nelson
Stewardship Program and the federal Coastal and Estuarine Land
Conservation Program!
ICING ON THE CAKE NEWS!
The improved and enhanced federal easement tax incentives that private
landowners were enjoying for the last several years were just given a
renewed status this month! These improved incentives cover donations
dating back to January 1, 2010 and forward to December 31, 2011. This
is some of the best news we've had all year! Please contact our office
if you would like more information.
On behalf of all of us here at Glacial Lakes Conservancy, we wish you
a Happy New Year 2011 and send our thanks to you for your support of
our private and public land conservation work in your community.
Cheers!
