These are the instructions:
This knol describes how to add, change and remove references on your
knol. The reference tool allows you to create a reference section at
the bottom of your knol automatically.
Getting started
(1)First, you need to enter edit mode by clicking on the Edit tab on
your knol. The editing toolbar will appear and you should be able to
locate the reference tool on this toolbar (look for the [1] icon).
After placing your cursor in the location where you would like the
reference to be linked from, click "Reference"
(2)In order to create a new reference, click "Create a new reference"
(3You can now type in the reference you would like to add (or copy and
paste it from somewhere else). I first typed in "From Google's main
website" and then clicked [Add a Link] to add a web address I want the
reference to link to (this is optional).
(4)Note that the link text is automatically copied from the URL field.
I can edit this and choose my own link text:
(5 clicking [Save
(6I click [Add Selected] and I am done! See below for the result. If
you need to link to the same reference over and over again in your
text, you can do this simply by selecting an existing reference (or
several), as I have done now[1][2, 3].

I have just edited my Knol, "Qur'anic Ambiguities Analyzed" and
converted my "dead references, [x] into live links.

(1) Clicked on Edit on my Knol.
(2) Copied my URL into my Notepad.
(3) I went to original [x] and deleted it, and at that same location
place my curser.
(4) Then clicked on "Link" on format bar.
(5) In title bar, typed in [x] and clicked on "web address"
(6) In URL box, pasted the URL
(7) Clicked OK
(8) Link is a live link.
(9) I left the Reference list below for reference to titles of link.
