Hey Guys,

Hope you're well, could do with your advice!

I brought a GK24 last year and the mast has broken so needing to replace it. The mast is a keel step but we have just heard back from the riggers that the angle for the spreaders is too step at 39%. The limit they would build a mast is 30%. They have stated that the mast has been put too far forward. I have attached photos but looking at other boats it seems pretty normal. They are asking me to change it to a deck step which you can appreciate is a lot of money. Am I missing a trick, is the mast in the wrong position?

Also the keel bolts have been fiberglassed over, nothing seems to be wrong with the keel but just wondering if i should check them and how would you suggest to do this?

Cheers

Tim

Hi, Yep looking at your pictures your mast is definitely further forward than mine. Mine and most I know of are set on the upstanding plate about  12" back from where yours is .
Hope this helps , seems a great expense to change all this !!

Hi Tim

I'm a former GK24 owner (GK273). I've just doubled checked photos of my old boat. You mast appears to be in the right place. The other chap is talking about a deck stepped mast. From the your photos it looks like you have a Z spars boom, couldn't tell the mast, but doesn't look like a proctor. The original's were proctor. (Sorry if I'm telling what you already know). The original spreaders were very well swept. I don't know what, but from your photo, I wold say mine were more swept than yours. (photos are difficult to compare). Have you spoken to seldom, who I think took over proctor?
As for the keel bolts, do you mean fiberglass or gel coat? Fiberglass would be very unusual, gel coat over the bolts is quite normal to protect the area from corrosion.
regards

Adam

Adam just beat me to it, & I'm sure he is bang on. Mine was a masthead and the mast sat on the pad behind your mast hole. Fractionals do have there mast sat forward and have a larger mainsail and smaller headsails. To change to masthead rig would mean changing all sails, boom, rigging etc as well. ££££

Hopefully someone will come along with info about a new fractional mast.

Regards

Simon

Agree with the last posts, attached is a picture of my fractional and you can see the hole for the mast is sat forwards of the deck pad. The mast will then drop down just astern of your forward bulkhead. And for what it’s worth, my spreaders are well swept too, I would imagine due to being fractional and to give the mid point forestay connection on the mast more support which otherwise comes from the backstay on the mastheads.

Kind Regards

Peter
