Worth it though.
Hi, I am helping my Brother fix his BIOS on the above computer. I installed a new hard-drive and downloaded drivers from the Dell website. However, I need to update or fix the bios. When starting up, I hit F2 to go into the BIOS and when It comes up, it hangs and the only way to get out of it is to hold the off button a few seconds and then let it reboot properly. I went to Dell Website and found the upgraded BIOS but didnt want to mess with it becasue the computer is working fine just the fact the BIOS hangs when pushing F2? Any help would be greatly apprecaited.
It is not a bios password, it is a boot password. You will have to contact the manufacturer. If there are jumpers, then you are lucky, but newer models have a security chip installed. You may need to contact the manufacturer in order to obtain the master admin password for that laptop. You could also replace the security chip, if you want to get crazy.
You can replace the 24u05 chip, but I would suggest simply shorting the chip.
Saudering on a laptop requires alot of skill and the extreme heat can damage it very easily. I sale guides on shorting the bios chip at -core.com
..
JP1 on the motherboard- short the jumper amnd apply power to the MB for about 3 seconds this should clear the password. If it is not designated JP1 it should be CMOS clear. More info can be found on the Dell website (Dell.com) under product support. You can look up the exact system using the service tag on the back of the machine. The tag is usually a 5 place combination of digits and letters.
Hope this helps.
When you find the jumper, look carefully. There will be 3 pins and the jumper will be joining the center pin to either left or right pin. What you need to do, is remove the jumper and join the center pin to the opposite pin. e.g. if the jumper joins center pin to left pin, then remove it and join center pin to right pin. Now wait for a few seconds and then again remove the jumper and join the center pin to left pin.
I have found that BIOS/CMOS Password Recovery Tool is the most effective.:
BIOS/CMOS Password Recovery Tool is a program that works instantly to remove any lost or forgotten BIOS/CMOS password. Simply boot your PC to DOS and execute the program, and get access to forgotten BIOS/CMOS passwords in just seconds
