afteran automated update through the dell update utility i found out the the usb3 ports at the back- wifi and 4g wwan cards are not detected anymore and the screen goes blank after a few seconds after boot
i found out the the bios for 5450 the version without the docking port was installed but i can not revert to the correct bios since when i try to manually update the bios i get a wrong hw id error message
Just got off the phone with Dell. They said that there is no way to force the BIOS update if its the wrong type error. The only way to fix it (assuming the methods in this thread were already done) is to replace the motherboard (the BIOS chip).
I think running it in command line might work on older versions of the BIOS, but we were unable to get it to do anything via Command Line in Windows, or through the recovery (F12, update BIOS). It would not take any switches. In Windows it shows what others have posted saying not valid for this system, BIOS update failed. I don't know what to say for those that don't have them covered under warranty. I would still try to call and explain that this happened through no fault of your own.
I opened up a case with Dell and they are saying they will have to replace the motherboard. Im trying to see if there is a switch/option to force the update even with the wrong system type. If so I will update and let everyone know.
I have successfully got the Optiplex 7010, 9020 to run the BIOS Updates correctly, so it leads me to think it is an Older Model issue. When I install Windows 1809 or lower, those updates work fine, so I am wondering what in 1903 that is stopping that from running? Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.
I am not having issues installing Windows 1903, It was running the BIOS Updates after I had it updated. I was hoping to see if you guys know what in Windows 1903 is stopping it vs other versions of WIndows. I know they are old computers and the BIOS Version was out a long time ago. It is just a pain.
A little of a shot in the dark, but have you tried running as a different user (hold shift while right click)? Or try running in admin command prompt? Also make sure bitlocker is suspended if installed.
I have found no other ways to do the BIOS updates on some older Dell systems. I think you may just be able to dump your update file on the USB and use the BIOS update function when booting the computer.
For bios and drivers with Dell, use Dell Command Update. If you stay with version 2.4, you can do this from the CLI (or script it of course). Pull the logs to a central store for review
It has worked well for us in getting systems ready for 1903. Everything from the last 6 years works fine and now upgrades cleanly to 1903
I own a Dell optiplex gx260 PC and I got bios revision a03 and want to go higher like a09. I tried the Dell support page using the Wine program down loader after a little configuring and set up on Install Shield Wizard I get the message :
The PC doesn't have a floppy diskette drive any more and the other option using download manager is only executable via Windows Internet explorer I don't blame wine or anybody else but this is frustrating.
