I installed it, default settings (which included the plugin for VS2012), and the plugin has installed in ~/Documents/Visual Studio 2012/AddIns/. However, when I start Visual Studio, the plugin simply doesn't show up, not even in the extension manager.

So you do not see a GIT menu option?

What does the Add-in Manager show(Tools|Add-in Manager)?

What files do you have in your Addins folder?

Add-in manager shows nothing (well, apart from NuGet). The Addins
folder has GitPlugin.AddIn, GitPlugin.dll and a folder called en-US
with GitPlugin.resources.dll in it.

I'd recommend then to add the add-in path directly in VS menu: Tools\Options\Environment\Add-in Security. There're predefined paths but I had to add my own path (Somewhere in Documents\VisualStudio 2012\AddIns)

I went to Tools\Options\Source Control and then selected GIT for my source control so now I can right click a file in Solution Explorer and access GIT options.  It still wont show in main menu like it did in VS2010.

Part 2:
I had installed VS2012 with an admin account so I copied my AddIns folder from c:\users\myadmin\Visual Studio 2012\Addins to   c:\users\myNonAdmin\Visual Studio 2012\Addins and presto, GIT was in my menu.
